Opinion: is it better In general to come up short or to overshoot? ( if a mod sees this can you add a poll I can't do it from mobile)

Overshooting is way more thug and way gnarlier. It looks cooler and it hurts less. Knuckling feels like slamming into a brick wall.

Knuckling forces you to a stop much faster than overshooting, making it hurt way more and looks way less cool

Would you change that opinion based on the size and type of jump. Few years back I overshot a 30' step down and ended up in the hospital

Size no, type yes.

Big jumps don't hurt that much if you overshoot a little bit. But you'll be in a world of pain if you come up short just a little bit.

I would never want to come up short on a step up, but there are some step downs that I've hit that I wouldn't want to take too deep

Ive overshot and undershot a big step down and overshooting to 15 feet above the Gucci plateau was better than coming 20+ feet down to a hard knuckle.

Overshooting in all situations except on really kicky and steep jumps, feels like jumping off a building.

Overshooting all day. I hit the knuckle 3/4's of the way through a switch 3 this year and dislocated my shoulder. Fuck knuckles.

Yeah most of the time I overshoot I end up ok, knuckled a jump sideways on one leg from and now my lcl is kinda shitty, if I overshot I would've been better off. Depends on the landing though, my mountain had a jump with a hard ass knuckle, but the sweet spot was super steep and about 5-8 feet long before dead flat so you had to be precise, worst of both worlds I guess.

But everytime I've overshot a well built big jump I end up fine while the knuckle will a. Destroy your balls and b. Do other harm.

In my opinion knuckeling is way better when you define overshoolting as jumping over the whole landing and not only taking it deep. I did both multiple times and overshooting was far more painfull. Sometimes i can take a little knuckeling even on big kickers (20m) and ride it out but real overshooting no way!

You haven't really overshot a jump until you've overshot one jump and landed in the next jumps landing.

knuckling hurts way less. Well this is like if you actually land flat. like thats pussy shit when you say you landed at the bottom of the landing that doesnt hurt but actually landing where there is no steepness to the landing anymore hurts a lot on a big jump

Overshooting is better, to a point. If you overshoot and the slope is still downhill when you landed, it is much better than landing flat on the knuck or even landing uphill. But, if you overshoot to a point that you land flat, it is obviously worse because you had more air time and the impact will be harder. It also depends on the type of the jump. Landing on the knuck of a step up is rlly bad ( I once shattered my heel bone from this) and overshooting on a step up is much better. And as of a stepdown if you land flat because you didn't come up fast enough its like jumping of whatever size the kicker is, so it isn't that bad. In general, I think step-downs are much safer and after what happened to my foot, i dont even want to ski step-ups anymore at all.

Also casing is way better imo. Casing big jumps sucks, but overshooting can fucking kill you.

Also I think people don't grasp what overshooting is. Landing in the sweet spot or slightly deep isn't overshooting. I think some people feel likg 2 feet past the knuckle is the landing, and everything is overshooting it. Overshooting it to me is gucci and beyond. Gucci looks dope, but is probably as rough on the knees as a knuckle depending on the jump. Going much beyond that is like a bomb going off. You're basically going twice as far and still landing almost as flat.

Overshooting to flat defiantly hurts more for me. Knees die. Sometimes I hit my head on my knee? I find knuckling way more manageable. But yet again I did fracture my spine spinning off a jump, knuckling, and bouncing back onto my back

Another vote for knuckling here. But I also don’t hit big jumps. I’m a medium jump kind of guy (aka a bitch). Knuckling switch is ridiculously shitty too though

"overshooting a jump" means missing the landing completely, like simon dumont tow in status. Seems like y'all are confusing this with going big, taking it deep, or gucci plateau. not the same thing.

Not sure why people feel differently than this. Watched my buddy overshoot to flat and fracture a vertebrae. If he knuckled he would have fared better.

I did a vertebrae and my femur 12 years ago on a good one. Probably the worst feeling ever. When you case you're like "fuck this sucks". When you overshoot, as soon as you hit the lip you're like "Well this is how I die. I've always wondered how I was gonna go out". Your life flashes before your eyes, once, twice, maybe even three times. Sometimes you roll the windows down, then back up, then decide to go out with a moderate temperature and put them at half. You call your mom, your friends, post a facebook farewell. Reflect on skiing and it's impact on your life for better or worse. Then a few minutes later you finally land and splatter in place.

Casing shit sucks, but that feeling in your stomach when you know you're going double the length of the jump is rowdy. Best case scenario you rape your knees and ride it out, only sacrificing a pair of underwear. Worst case, seeee yahhh

Happens all the time someone says they "overshot" a jump and that's why they fell but they were in the medium park and all that happened was they landed 20 feet down the 30 foot landing instead of just barely past the knuckle like they wanted. I've always took overshoot to mean you missed the landing completely, landing deep is fine and is something you need to get comfortable with when you start hitting larger jumps. If you still have tranny to land in, then you didn't overshoot. Now the time I sailed over a small bonk/hip feature and landed on the flat with enough force that I ejected my bindings even though I hit the ground skis first (din at a 9), lawn darted out of my bindings another 5 feet, and knocked the wind out of myself, that was an overshoot. You can overshoot small features and survive, although it's not pleasant, but if you overshoot larger feature you are going to the hospital. Meanwhile I've knuckled 50footers and been completely fine, the force not even enough to eject me from my bindings, just have to be ready for that stone skipping part where you go another 20 feet after you bounce the knuckle. Given the choice I'd knuckle a 50 footer again rather than that small bonk overshoot, I was on the ground unable to breathe for a good 5 minutes from that thing.
