School, internships, travel, work? I'm planning on taking a year off to work/ski, but I'd like to hear about what you guys did after school and how it affected your future.
Being a HS senior is fun, but it is getting more and more stressful as graduation approaches. I got accepted to some schools, but I'm just not feeling ready.

What did you do with your first year after highschool?

Graduated in 4 years, worked enough to quit my job soon after I graduated, travel for 2 months, then go back real world.
Go to college, work, ski, graduate. Then take a year off of life travel, ski, take odd jobs. Then start your life. Youll be older and appreciate the experience more.
I went to college because I didn't have any other choice (thanks mom and dad).
I'm in my third year and even though I really enjoy school, I know if I were to have taken a year or semester off I would have never gone back. If you have some direction in your life and are somewhat confident in what you want to do/where you want to go, I say just go to college.
You said you want to take a year off to work and ski. You can still do those things in college(: Unless you mean like going 110% in both, then maybe you can't haha. You can take advantage of the longer breaks/shorter semesters than high school to do your own thing. I work 10-15 hours per week and still get about 60-70 days per season, so if you're worried about that, it's doable!

College, i would recommend this too. Taking a year after highschool is kinds pointless IMO. Its much more worthwhile to go straight into college, get it done and then youre 22/23 when you graduate which I think is a much better age to travel/ski/work than 18/19.
Most people i know who take time off then go to school feel out of place (everyone is younger) and then get frustrated when everyone they know is graduated and they have two more years of school still. Just something to think about.

This. It's not hard to do both.
It's hillarious because a bunch of kids I know took a year off to ski and stuff and then I skied way more than them while in college. I got almost 90 days last year and they sat in their ass with like 30.

Learn about yourself, do things you wouldn't normally do, eat all different kinds of food, talk to strangers, write, read, look around, discover, and be thankful.
Learning these things helped me prepare for college. Don't go somewhere or do something just because someone is telling you to, be in control of your own life. Do your own thang.

If you don't want to go to college like a normal middle class kid and be around kids your age and have fun and party... then maybe think about other options long term. You're unlikely to get anything meaningful out of it and it may take well over 4 years if you go to college when you are older than everyone else you won't want to live in dorms and shit.
Think about a trade. If you want to live in a ski town and have money and not be a broke ass being an electrician or carpenter or plumber is an extremely good route to go. Those guys are booked out for months because the demand is so high and there aren't many of them. People have no idea how hard it is to get someone in to simply fix a leaky faucet in a ski town.

Haha the engineering workplace is nothing like school. Same can be said for all majors.
Personally, I don't like engineering. But I do enjoy the people I work with, the money I make, the hours I work, and the lifestyle it provides.
Don't pick a major you hate, but be realistic in your expectations. Majoring in history, while enjoyable, will likely lead to a lifetime of ramen and roommates for example ;).
I busted ass for 4 short years, and it has set me up quite well in life. Especially for someone like myself who isn't the type A go-getter hyper motivated individual.
I re-enrolled in high school. I'm a junior for the fourth time this year.
Started working right away. I have zero debt. I'm living the dream. Fuck college.

I went right into construction and have been doing it ever since. I build things with my hands. I live at my home mountain and I get time off whenever I want. No kids. Just a wife and a dog. Nailed it.

Sounds like hard ass work, glad you like it though. Hopefully you can transition to more of a foreman/managerial role before your body gets too beat up :)
Do you work all year round or follow the traditional work hard in the summer and collect unemployment during the winter? Or do you make enough for the whole year just during the summer?

No but for real if you pick a college with a great location you will have an awesome time. And it's easy to plan to ski 2-4 days a week at least in college. I ended up taking 2 years off after 3 semesters but i am re enrolling next fall and I am happy with my choice. I have most all pre reqs out of the way and am very motivated to go back because I have already experienced class and I am motivated to study biology. Also know how bad it sucks to work a shitty kitchen job and be broke but ride 5 days a week and I am very tired of it.

I work year round and I am a superintendent. Actually finally got promoted recently after a lot of hard work for a long time. I'm not a wealthy man but I'm happy.

I'm gonna be 22 in mostly 300 level classes and will be a junior after 1 semester so only one year behind. Not too bad at all. Just had too much fun for a while.

That's probably because you went into one of the hardest chemical engineering programs in the country at OSU which has tons of competition.

Lol, the curriculum is the same at Harvard or Chico state. One might have a little more emphasis on theory or application, but the material is basically the same. Post grad is where the school you go to makes a big difference.
Moved to the mountains and worked full time as an ski instructor in the winter and mostly just did whatever I wanted the rest of the year (/biking, surfing, summer skiing etc..) If your unsure what you want to study then I recommend taking a year off for sure. However I probably had way to much free time in the summer time that year I should have spent working to save up more money, so I would recommend making sure your working at least a bit through the entire year (unless your out traveling). Also in my class now most people had at least one or two years before they started to study.

Read the life instructions and went straight to school at Umaine. Smoked a ton of pot, almost drank myself to a pulp, and got stuck with a very smelly roommate.
