I cant because that picture is ass and the numbers are illegible

this looks like a thread from 2002

maybe i just blow at high school math...but im pretty sure you can solve that

The unknown side of the triangle has to equal sqrt of 39. And 6.24+6.24+12 does not equal 16. Teacher must of been drunk.

If you ignore the 8's, the answer is 70.

you can make it bigger by clicking on it

Not sure what this has to do with common core. That shape is just impossible. The side lengths don't work.

Posts: 2117

The area is 70 and it's a bad drawing, the 8's don't matter.

If think of the two side triangles as one object 16-12= 4 which means the base of the triangle is 4 the height is listed as 5 therefore

4*5/2=10

The middle rectangle has an area of 60 so the total area is 70

It's not drawn to scale. Those stupid ass textbooks have tons of problems like that just to fuck with you but you can still solve the problem easily. Answer is 70 like others said above

thats an impossible triangle. bottom would have to be root39

Posts: 174

Its 70 the drawings dont necessarily reflect the actual lengths

It's a high school maths problem. Are you really expecting any sort of scale for kids who are probably too dumb to even realise that's out of scale?

Posts: 1703

it's 69

Common core is straight fucked.

Hey, it teaches you that all the information isn't used in solving the problem.

Rectrangle = l*w

Triangle = 1/2 l*w

This is why USA is ranked 20th. To those that are bad at math, this means that TWENTY countries are better at math than the US. We were beat by Singapore and Vietnam. Congrats.

Having relooked at this thing I hope this was never a test question. I think if information is going to be put on a problem, then it should be accurate. The only way to solve the problem is to ignore certain information, which is rediculuse. You could either ignore the hypotenuse measure and assume that 16 is the correct value which would give you an area 70 after taking b*h of the rectangle and then dividing the remaining 4 units and dividing them by 2 to get a base of 2 for each triangle and then finding their combined area using 2(1/2(b*h)). Or you could ignore the base value of 16 and find the value of the base of each triangle by taking the b value of a^2 + b^2= c^2 and then using that To find the area of each triangle and then multiplying by 2 and adding the area of area of the rectangle which gives you a total of about 91.2. So depending on how you approach this problem, there is two answer which I say again is stupid because shapes only have 1 area value for a denoted unit.

this, (base 1 + base 2)/(2) then times by height

I do agree that common core is stupid, but this is a super easy math problem.

its only 70 if you ignore the 8s and assume the 5 is at a right angle to the bottom. you can ignore any other number and solve it as a different area. as shown it's an impossible shape

its called a trapezoid and its just two triangles double teaming a rectangle.

GORILLAWALLACEits called a trapezoid and its just two triangles double teaming a rectangle.

No way, I had no idea!

The numbers don't work. A trapezoid with those dimensions is impossible.

All times are Eastern (-4)
