Injuries caused by poles?

So quick back story, I use poles randomly. I'm gunna say maybe 1/3 times that I ski. Last time I used them I did a shifty with just a safety. I landed short and crossed my ski with my pole and landed with my ribs right onto my handle. I thought I had done more damage than I did, thankfully just the wind was knocked out of me.

I've also watched a friend of mine hit a jump and kicked a cork 7. When he landed his cheek bounced off of his pole and knocked him out cold.

Do you guys have any weird/unnecessary injuries that were caused from poles!

13 year old me....hauling ass through glades and i hit a bump wrong. I got bucked toward a tree so i stuck my hand out in front of me to try to catch myself, but low and behold my pole stabbed into the tree and the grip shot into my chest. Stopped me dead in the water and thought I broke my ribs haha. I had a perfect bruise of my pole grip dead center of my chest for the next two weeks.

tried my first backflip ever with the pole straps on aha landed backseat ran over my pole and the strap got caught on my thumb and broke it which is why i dont use poles in the park now

I hit a jump forgot what I was trying at the time but I ended up planting my pole in the ground and proceeded to run into it with my face and ended up breaking my pole on my face. So no poles for me these days.

One of my mother's college friends went skiing with her boyfriend. Dude tomahawked down a steep run and ended up impaling himself with a pole, it cut his heart and he died.

I didn't believe that was possible until a friend of mine did the same thing in highschool - only luckily it was his leg and not his chest. It didn't cut him too deep, but he bled all over the place and had to get some serious stitches, so I guess I could see it happening.

Just think about that story next time you go skiing....

Back when I did Cossacks the American way (poles between the legs) I landed once with my poles still between my legs, and had to carve a little in the landing with it caught there and thought I was going to tear my hamstring.

Now I do Cossacks the Canadian way (poles out to the sides and up, fists between legs) so instead of getting my poles crossed and almost dying I'm just punching myself in the groin.

i don't use pole straps any time i ski something gnarly enough that tomahawking is a possibility. losing a pole fuckin blows but my body is a little more important. i also don't use pole straps in the trees

My friend chucked a poll spear style at one of our other buddies and it hit him in the skin in between his thumb and pointer...went right through it

These are brutal, I thought I broke a thumb falling with my pole weird but before this never heard of people being speared or impaled

I feel like everyone who uses pokes has broken/sprained a thumb at some point. They call it skiers thumb for a big reason.

Ski pole straps are such an obnoxiously touchy topic. People are always freaking out about how to use them. I just put four fingers in and leave my thumb out and I haven't had any injuries from poles or straps.

I never ever use straps. Scares the hell out of me. I've had my pole get stuck when I was skiing fast and I was very lucky not to be using straps.

true, i'd rather drop my pole then break my wrist. haha I thought i was the only one that didnt use straps.

This. I like the wrap around handles...they hold your hand in and you don't have to death grip your poles all day...but when push comes to shove your hand comes out

So my brother did a 360 and his pole stuck in the ground or something and he landed on it on his stomach and his pole snapped in half. Luckily he didn't get hurt tho

Poles definitely aren't necessary for park, but when you get onto other parts of the mountain, you would be an idiot not to use them. They are essential for steep skiing and act as an extension of your arm.

I caught an edge whilst maintaining speed through a flat area (trying to gun through because the snow was cement).

When I caught it, my right pole got hammered into some ice and the right side of my head slammed into the top of the pole, along with my full body weight. It was with enough impact to break the pole. I had quite a concussion and don't think about what might have been if I was without a helmet.

In 8 years of skiing with poles I've surprisingly never injured myself. However, my friend that I ski with went off a jump and somehow stuck his pole in the ground before he landed and took it straight to the mouth. A couple stitches and nerve damage in his tooth but nothing major.
Although at my home mountain this year 2 guys collided and one accidentally slashed the other dude's throat with his pole. Severed his jugular and he bled out in like 10 seconds right there on the mountain. Crazy shit

I've always been sketched out by pole straps when skiing big mountain stuff, incase they don't come off in a crash, so I started using the old scott poles which have rubber grip/strap, they come off super easily in a crash but don't fall of as easily as not using the pole strap.

Got a nice deep cut right above my waist a couple years back from falling on the pointy end of a pole, haven't really skied park with poles since. Always use them when skiing outside the park but usually without straps on

A few years ago this kid landed with a short park pole between his legs and cut his sack open. Also, last
season, I broke my nose on what I'm pretty sure was my pole, and my roommate got a black eye and cut up his face a couple times falling on his poles.

i already had bad thumbs from football, and landing on the handles in my hands would aggravate them through the season, eventually ditched poles

flat 5 to pole plant landing. Pole breaks my googles and gives me a black eye. Probably a mild concussion too.
