Skiing and concussions?

Don't mess up. *If* you definitely feel okay and the doc says you're okay, canceling the trip may be unwarranted. But really, don't hit your head again, which means anything that may result in falling towards your head is a bad idea.

Experience - skull fractures, TBI, and a few less serious concussions.

go for it, I guess. just be aware of the potential of having to deal with PCS and the other long list of bullshit concussions bring (mental health issues, coordination being off/gone, migraines, etc.). im still fucked up from mine and I knocked myself out 5 years ago.

So if I did go to jackson I wouldn't do any jumps, my skis would stay on the ground and Id probably film/take pictures of friends.

After talking to shin bangs mom (she's a nurse), my GFs parents (doc and nurse) and my neighbor (he's a PA), what ive gained from them is that if I'm still feeling good, no headaches or vomiting, then I should be able to take it easy since it will be a full week later. Most docs say 2 weeks as a precaution. I don't want to be arrogant but I don't want to lose $400 either so I think if i went and just worked on my photography and filming and cruised around I could be okay.

Also I need a new helmet, I heard the best helmets are the ones with MIPS installed. Any suggestions?

Today i fucked myself up on a cork 7 and was out for a couple seconds, really weird feeling not remembering the trick you just did... I luckily haven't shown signs of a serious concussion so I'm thankful for that, i bit right through my tongue though. Refer to post in non ski gabber.

I say go if you can't get money back, just don't do anything stupid and you'll be fine.

How do you feel right now? My experience with concussions is they tend to get worse over the period of a week. If you want to go that's up to you and you very well could feel better by then! I didn't. Just be careful, small hits afterwards can lead to big problems. Also if you start to feel overwhelmed then just take a break because it won't get better until you do. I have had a couple (Both wearing a helmet). And when people say head injuries are no joke they mean it. I had cognition problems for at least 6 months after my first and I still don't feel completely right after my second one in February.

Honestly you probably shouldn't even be on the computer right now. I got a concussion earlier this year and it helped a lot to just lay down and avoid electronics.

I was in a similar situation last year because the rail jam my home mountain was having was going on a week after my concussion but i wanted to do it. I did it and luckily i was fine but you should ask your doctor again to be safe. $400 down the road wont matter but your dome will. Sell your part of the trip to someone for cheaper or something. also i switched to a Pret Helmet (Cynic X) which has mips and its been super nice.

Get the Smith Maze MIPS, I love the thing and it's saved my head several times.

It is a bit iffy dude.. seriously take it easy and see how you are doing over the next few days, which unfortunately means no ns or computer. If you really want to go, literally just sleep the next couple of days and let yourself recover. I'm still recovering from my seventh and it has been well over a month, but I have been out to film the homies and have been taking a break from hitting any features. So go for it, but just know you are taking a risk and for the love of god don't hit your head OP.

Posted about this in a similar thread a few weeks ago, even if your just going to ski easy dont go, skiing is one of the worst things you could do for your brain I went skiing after having a concussion 2 years ago and I had felt fine at the time and it messed me up way worse, still feel the effects. It may seem shitty now but dont go its not worth messing your brain up its a serious issue.

Imo mips is unnecessary. I had a giro nine nips but got a giro ledge and liked it better and it cost half of that the nine did and it's saved my ass multiple times.

Girl ledge does have MIPS man, that's the one I'm thinking about getting

id highly recommend not going on your trip man. or just go and don't ski. even if you take it easy some asshole snowboarder could blindside you and take you out. take the time off like your doctor advised and i wouldn't even risk it

I've suffered a few concussions skiing in my time, I had one that sounds similar to yours where I was knocked out cold for 30 sec or so, got a CT scan, etc and I was fine. I'm pretty confident I went skiing the next weekend, I was 15 i believe and my doc just told me to keep it mellow.

Other concussions I've suffered I've skied almost immediately after, I hit my head pretty bad at a ski contest when i was like 17, stopped skiing for the day after I hit my head, but I went skiing the next day because it was the contest day, skied moguls the day after that. I didn't get knocked out, but I definitely suffered a minor concussion. I had another minor concussion when i was 19 and I filmed for like a week then started skiing hard again.

IMO go on your trip and just take it easy, don't do anything you know might fall on, etc. Its pretty easy to ski around and not fall on your head, just don't do anything stupid. In reality you shouldn't hit your head that hard again for awhile, way longer than just ski season, but its not worth worrying about as much as you are. Just take it easy, don't hit your head on your trip and you'll be fine.

For the record I deal with athletic injuries professionally, went to school for sports medicine/ Athletic Training which include education on proper concussion protocol. That being said here is what you need to be aware of:

"Second-impact syndrome (SIS) occurs when the brain swells rapidly, and catastrophically, after a person suffers a second concussion before symptoms from an earlier one have subsided. This second blow may occur minutes, days or weeks after an initial concussion, and even the mildest grade of concussion can lead to SIS. The condition is often fatal, and almost everyone who is not killed is severely disabled. The cause of SIS is uncertain, but it is thought that the brain's arterioles lose their ability to regulate their diameter, and therefore lose control over cerebral blood flow, causing massive cerebral edema.

Most cases of SIS have occurred in young people, who are thought to be particularly vulnerable. In order to prevent SIS, guidelines have been established to prohibit athletes from returning to a game prematurely. For example, professionals recommend that athletes not return to play before symptoms of an initial head injury have resolved."

In summary, you could die even from a minor mishap. My recommendation is to not go skiing unless you are symptom free for 48 hours. In the meantime, you should not be looking at any electronic screens- tv, phone, computer. Complete rest. When you sprain an ankle you don't go for a jog later that day. You rest so your ankle can heal. Same idea with a concussion, give your brain some rest.

Be careful man. Three things one shouldn't fuck with, head and spine injuries and wu tang.

You dont necessarily have to hit your head for it to be a problem. Sometimes motion, the impact of landings , your computer screen etc isnt good for you.

Do what youre gonna do but just be careful.

Get a POC. Mine has saved mah noggin before and it looks dOpe. Pocs with MIPS are expensive af but chances are you'd rather pay extra now than have to pay later in the hospital.

In all the models there is mips there is a non mips version as well. Either way the ledge is an awesome helmet and has saved me from a few bad days I wish I had gotten it sooner though. I took a hit the week before I got it that fucked my head up; not a horrible hit but I couldn't see correctly out of my right eye for 2 hours and I still have short term memory problems.

Hate to be a downer but this is so true, I got my concussion from being blindsided by a snowboarder and he rode away before I could even take not of his jacket.

I'd say go. If you get another one, just sleep it off and ski the next day.
I've had tons of concussions, and it don't affect my ability to potato.. carrots, noodles, chicken, broth, salt, pepper, celery.
Boil the chicken and broth, add veggies and cook. Add cooked noodles and salt & pepper to taste.

It kind of just depends on you. Are you a person who an keep it mellow out there? If you aren't going to get any refund it's probably not a bad idea to go, but be legitimately careful. Hell even if you went and barely skied it would still probably be more fun than staying home.

Also I wouldn't drink for a little bit. Let yo brain heal.

Good luck either way. I just got to jhole and gt for my first time last year. Loved it. So I dont want to say you should def skip but just understand the risks and take it easy.

The upside and downside to jhole for this trip is the terrain. It's unlikely that you and your friends would just be skiing mellow groomers all day, and it's not like the park is the main focal point where you could just hold a camera and not hit things.

That said I'm honestly at a point where I can't hit my head any more. My brain is fucked up. My last 2 concussions fucked me. It will be 2 years april 7th since my last one and things haven't gotten better. That said I made the choice to get back out there and take it easy. Obviously it's a little different as you're coming right off a concussion I'm more dealing with the post concussion issues.

Idk. It's a little risky for me to get out there, the summer after my brain died I went to NZ, almost canceled because i was fucked up. Couldn't walk right, didn't know where I was or what I was doing sometimes. Couldn't talk, would stutter and lose my train of thought.

Anyway, it ended up being a great experience. It was probably a bad idea to go, but I knew if I didn't I would regret it.

I didn't send any big cliffs, I didn't throw anything wild in the park, but I had a good time just being there.
