Vail resorts pass pulled?

Hey NS i was skiing at Breck and ducked a rope to get on to a cat track instead of skiing around to the gate on to the cat track, a ski patroller came and talked to me and gave a warning on my pass it was the first one of the year and i was told i would not get a two week suspension. fast forward a week and my pass stopped working i called and asked why and they said this was my third warning in three years. can they do this now? pull passes for warnings i have gotten in previous years? Just wanted to get an opinion from someone else. Thanks. (both sides of the rope were open terrain.)

I don't mind getting warnings i usually get one per season and ski more conservative but pulling a pass for warnings from a previous season seems absurd.

Honestly, they're treating you like shit. You're the customer, so while having these policies is somewhat acceptable, not making them clear to every pass holder is not.

Go to the office and talk to them. If they don't give you your pass back, send a well-written letter threatening court actions. They'll almost surely settle and reinstate you. If they don't, set a small claims court date and have them sent an order. (It costs like $50). Should work, since they probably won't show up to court, or they'll settle before then. But hopefully you won't have to do any of this.

As a full time patroller, they should never have pulled your pass. Vail resorts has been out of control lately with their operation. Try to challenge the "offense" and get reinstated.

I've skied in Zermatt Switzerland and never once even saw a patroller

one of my friends at park city got her pass pulled for 28 days for skiing "too fast" in a slow zone. fucking retarded if you ask me, there were so many more gapers out there that were going faster than her and were out of control, while she was completely in control just going "too fast." fuck vail.

It's crazy how strict it is here in the US. When I went to Italy last year, I did some crazy shit and the only person who even came close to yelling at me was a cop. No wonder Candide can do that stuff...

It sucks how butt hurt vail resorts gets about that stuff. I kind of want some class action lawsuit to go down ending vail resorts, or at least some kind of catalyst to change their business method.

If you raise enough havoc in their administration they'll give you your pass back. You are paying them a lot of money so for them to just take away completely something you payed for is absurd, ESPECIALLY if both sides of the rope were open terrain

It is simple math. If you bought more Epic Burgers they would not pull your pass. The yellow jackets scanned you and figured out you never spend any money on mountain and they said this guy is just clogging up the lift lines and then hot dogging all over the mountain and not spending any $$$.

Don't you know Vail is about about the $$$? Buy 2 or 3 $17 entrees at Mid-Vail and a t-shirt at Vail Sports and see if you can get your pass back.

Kidding, but not really.

Well, read the rules. Ropes are not to be crossed. That's why they are there for your safety and others as well.
I sometimes cross (duck) a rope. When I do I come to a stop. Then I look real good before I go.
If you olie over or just fly under you gonna get it eventually.

They can't get them all, but it's like this. The better of a skier you are, the more responsibility you have to follow the rules. To set the example for others who don't know shit yet is what you should do if you are hot shit.

I ski key all the time. The rule is if you see a yellow jacket you just have to start making more turns. If they signal you to slow down just slow down a littl. You don't have to stop. Every time they signal at me I do what they say and throw them a high five and keep on going with my day. It's huge horse shit that they pulled your pass like that though op :( sorry that happened homie. #JUSTICEFOROP

I saw a video out of Tahoe last week. Dude ducked a rope, similar to what you were talking about. Set off a decent size slab, that he was lucky to avoid.

Ropes are up for a reason. Don't be a statistic, but at this point, I would not feel bad for you.

do you enjoy being an asshole to people? the terrain was open on both sides of the rope so obviously he's not going to set off a slab. There was absolutely no harm in what he did and vail seriously crossed the line

Yeah sure rules were made to be followed, but rules were also made in regards to safety. Point blank if you're being safe and assuming the risks that come with breaking the rules, you shouldn't be punished. If you have no idea what the fuck you're doing and your brain is too small to interpret those rules correctly, some form of discipline should come out of that. Vail's system is just fucking backwards, that's really what it comes down to.

You have no idea what the situation is or terrain is. I do not either. But I do know a lot more about resort operations then you do, or anyone else here that is screaming "fuck Vail".

I know you all hate Patrol, but they do not put ropes up for no reason. There was some reason there was ropes up.

To assert that OP entered an avalanche prone zone is just as ridiculous though. Obviously ropes are up for a reason but sometimes they are there just to separate runs or areas. While they are there to be obeyed, you have to admit that it is bullshit to have your pass pulled for this. A warning would suffice and using previous years against you is bullshit too.

If you've never spent any time at a Vail owned resort, its really hard to understand what the Yellow jackets are like. Every experience I've ever had with them they have bullied me and treated me rudely. They are there to not only enforce the rules, but also to scare people into skiing very slow and cautiously. Skiing in fear takes the joy completely out of it and is one of the main reasons I own an Alta pass: so I can have fun and rip around the resort without fear of my pass being pulled and my season ending right there.

I skied at Breck once on a road trip two years ago and got my day pass pulled for getting 'air' in a 'no air zone'. Never have had such a poor experience and felt so ripped off.

imho Vail is toxic. I worked at northstar and was emailed when they acquired the lease announcing new raises only to have my pay cut $2 an hour when the season rolled around.

Ski resorts thrive on strict policies. I witness constantly resorts selling $150 lift tickets when they know winds or other weather will close lifts mid day.

Sorry OP but management reserves all rights and they don't give a single fuck about your inability to get another pass.

Does it explicitly say in the agreement that three violations in three years will get your pass pulled? If it does you will have a difficult case. I'm not saying impossible, but they explicitly stated the rules and you did not follow them. I'm not a fan of Vail corp., but you simply have to follow the rules set out in this case.

If it does not explicitly say that they can pull your pass for three offenses you have a good case. You have to stick to the rules but so do they, so if they are not you should get your pass back and avoid a suspension.

The thing to take from this is to ski slowly and make lots of turns and don't cross ropes no matter what. I know it sucks but you have to abide by their rules if you want to ski there. If you don't you will continue to have problems. I ski Mammoth on weekends and I make slalom and small gs turns in the crowded areas for this reason. You simply have to slow down when they tell you to. I know it sucks but that is just the way they do things and nothing you can do will change that. Hopefully you can avoid a suspension but treat this as a learning experience regardless.

Hey people. So the terrain park is roped off. 16 race kids slam under and over the rope into the park in a bad place and get landed on and slammed into by several others.
In another case a group of beginners does the same. Plus both groups did not stop or look uphill.
The ropes are not to be crossed. It's says that everywhere in the rules.
You have been warned three times and not learned the lesson?
Many driving violations go back 7 or five years.
You should have known better to stop, look and listen before crossing so you didn't get caught.

At many resorts you can cross ropes without hassle as long as the terrain is open and they just have them as a deterrent for beginners.

Seems like the rule here is don't cross ropes. Also, don't be a fuckhead. But honesty Vail is probably still reeling from the fact they've had to invest so much into this Taft Conlin case. Usually the Skier Safety Act covers everything, but Vail is still fighting over this kid hiking up into a roped off area. The last thing they need is people ignoring ropes because they are sweet to ollie over.

I'm all for people getting crazy as shit. Just do it in some less trafficked area where they find your body a couple days later. Not pulling air in "no air zones" or slamming 100 mph through a slow 'family zone.' The Yellow Jackets aren't on a full 99% of the mountain. Just be smart the second you see them and probably all is fine.

I've seen a few people get totally wrecked by some jag who didn't anticipate somebody would be under the lip or around that bend or merging over that rope. Lost spleens, concussions, a broken leg. I watched a relative of mine (who was the downhill skier) get bounced 25 yards forward and the skier that hit her jump up and say, "WTF, get out of the way." Luckily she wasn't hurt and ski patrol saw the whole thing. The guy was more of an unskilled skier than a dickhead, but still listening try and justify that he was "in the right" changed my perspective a lot.

Exactly this. It keeps the joeys from getting in over their heads. Hard vs soft closures. Jackson Hole has the perfect policy towards rope ducking imo.

Also, dont fucking stop! Keep skiing, you either will get caught bc youre not as good as the patroller, in which case you deserve to get pulled. The patroller wiil ski with you and give you props. Lastly youre the best skier on the mtn and will leave him in your dust.

Haha would be cool, but anyways op so much can change in 3 years, 3 years ago I was skiing on my first pair of twins and thought I was the best skier ever so I agree vail is being really unfair I almost feel like you should take it to court, I mean u paid a good chunk of money for your pass

They have signs at keystone that say "stay grounded" and it's because they're on rollers where gapers love to sit. I don't jump or spin or anything there for that reason alone. I've also seen safety standing at the bottom of the hill waiting for kids to not listen to the GIANT YELLOW warning sign. If it's posted follow the rules. If you did it where there was no signage you could've fought it and kept skiing.

The rope was likely up to keep people from the slope above from bombing down onto the cattrack and t-boning some oblivious family going 3mph along that cattrack. They want to limit access points so its not a huge clusterfuck of skiers crossing paths. people follow tracks, so if there are tracks ducking ropes, more people will follow. gotta nip it in the bud.

I had a pass at a vail resort for 3 years and never once had a problem. not once. I skied in fear quite a bit at this vail owned resort, but it was largely the pucker factor of the terrain that scared me. Whenever i was on a groomer runout going mach loony, i would throw a few quick sharp carves, slow down to less than 40mph and i never once had a problem. Maybe its cause i wasnt skiing in the backseat, sliding my turns perhaps?

Also, dont fucking stop! Keep skiing, you either will get caught bc youre not as good as the patroller, in which case you deserve to get pulled. The patroller wiil ski with you and give you props. Lastly youre the best skier on the mtn and will leave him in your dust.


I dont think i could outski atleast 50% of the trollers at the places i ski. Most of the trollers i see and deal with(rope drops, hiking with em, chatting about snow/avi conditions) fucking rip. HARD. not to mention, i only have 1 outerwear setup and id rather not burn bridges at my home mtn.

What is the JH rope policy you speak of?




OP: i would suggest going in and asking to speak to a manager in the season ticket office, and trying to find the right person to talk to. Be contrite, and apologetic. It was only 3 warnings in 3 years, so its not like you are a menace. Just try and work with the person asking what you can do to get it back. Classes, help at the lodge, pay a fine etc. Try and work with the person in good faith to get it back. Good Luck!

Yeah, the questions becomes whether Vail is willing to spend money showing up go court. If they do, they'll win, as OP doesn't have a case. But I feel like Vail would just settle and not bother spending the money. Honestly, OP could try to get some money out of them too for the trouble ($500 sounds pretty good).

Soft closures are fair game to ride, hard closures are a no go. They make the definition with signage and the number of ropes. Basically if you can duck the rope, ride it. If there are two or three ropes and you just cant ride under, its a hard closure.

everyone makes mistakes, but you'll probably be far more likely to think twice in the future when they turn your pass back on. If the terrain was open on both sides, why not just go that way?

You ducked a rope, then just sat there and let them yell at you and scan your pass and now you're pissed.

Don't duck ropes. That's one of the things a lot of places take very seriously. Generally more for closed trails, but a lot of peoples problems with patrol stem from ducking a rope.



Inb4 10 more pages about how vail hurt everyone's feelings and they aren't going to ever ski there again because life isn't fair and corporations and stuff.

joe_dirtHey NS i was skiing at Breck and ducked a rope to get on to a cat track instead of skiing around to the gate on to the cat track, a ski patroller came and talked to me and gave a warning on my pass it was the first one of the year and i was told i would not get a two week suspension. fast forward a week and my pass stopped working i called and asked why and they said this was my third warning in three years. can they do this now? pull passes for warnings i have gotten in previous years? Just wanted to get an opinion from someone else. Thanks. (both sides of the rope were open terrain.)

i got my pass pulled at keystone, was on my way too the park and some guy cut this girl off and they both ate shit pretty bad, all i said was "damn" next thing did notice here comes ski patrol and stops me and started screaming at me because i said damn. he asked for my pass and told me i had too call ski patrol too see when i can get it back. ever since that happen i jus been going too copper.
