Review of JP vs. Julien

Well, I got them a couple of weeks ago, and skied them a bit. Here is my review:

PROS:
-Super strong base/edges/sidewalls. I have taken some big hits on these, and they are holding up nicely.
-They are nice and long 191 cm. That is perfect for me.
-Nice width under foot...these things seriously float through powder. Almost no effort is needed to get them to float.
-Tail is stiff, but flexy enough to butter
-Graphics are really cool if you look at them up close

CONS:
-WAY too soft for me. I would go so far to say that they are hella soft. I was expecting them to be way stiffer, being that they are Armada's only 'big mountain' ski.
-Top sheet is chipping a bit... but I suppose most skis with this construction will do the same
-Not as light as I was led to believe.
-Tips and tails could be a bit wider.

In conclusion, these are less of a big mountain ski (due to lack of stiffness), and more of an 'all mountain' ski for me. I bet I can butter these nasty style. Overall they are cool, but need to be way stiffer.

I live in SLC, and I ski at Alta. That should answer your question.

hmm, if you want a fatter ski i would say the volkl sanouk, those things are huge,a dn should be fat enough for you. that, or the prophet if your a complete nut

i'd still never touch salomon bindings with a 30 foot pole. they pre-release like its their job to.-lanks

if you get a chance bro, try the made'ns. i considered the jp's too, but got the made'n as they are still fairly soft, but definitely stiffer than the jp's...i think. i really like the extra raise on the tail of the jp's, but so far the made'ns are la bamba!

cool man.. i appreciate the input. I am correct in saying that pretty much all of these fat pow skis are pretty soft?? I haven't really seen a stiff one yet. I thought the Made'n was soft-ish too.

you're right, the made'n is definitely soft, and although i haven't had the chance to ski the jp, i have heard from friends who have skied both that the made'n is a bit stiffer, namely in the tail, but probably not by a whole lot.

i'm coming to UT this weekend...can't wait to put the AK's to use!

I know you plan on giving them a try all over the mountain, but i'll pray for some big snow too, as I can imagine those things would be absolutely sick in some fresh pow!

I am definitely of the opinion that fat skis are taking over. I will ride my Made'ns or Pistols in the park anyday over a 'pure park ski.' Fat skis are more versatile and soo much more fun. Not to mention, stable.

Yep, Pollard's new park ski (I think it is called the Lucille, or some gir's name) is huge...it is so wide.

^I just got down from Alta, and reaffirmed my need for a stiff fat ski. To answer your question, I am a big heavy person (6'4', 220 lbs) so I need a big burly ski. The Armadas are long enough, and wide enough I suppose, but when I am ripping down something that is choppy, or bumpy, these things give too much...

Hi,
I ski at alta too! I have had great luck with the Volkl Gotama's. Not the stiffest ski around, but definately stiffer than the Jp vs Julien and Made'n. I wanted the 190 personally but had to settle for the 183. That worked out well for me cause it makes for a slightly easier time jibbing. They are surprisingly good skis too in more than just deep pow. Hope that helps. Dunno if you really said you were in the market for another ski or not. Until next time...See you at alta

My friend has a pair of gotama's and he loves them, uses them everywhere. They have a pretty stiff flex for my taste though.

WHy would you ever buy a ski without ever feeling their flex. THat is probably the most important aspect of how a ski performs and should be one of the main things to consider when buying them. So are the like Pistol or PR soft?
