College Scholarships in the Ski Community

Hello NS, i am a senior in highschool my name is Jack Casper and i am from minnesota. I am deciding on inver hills community college or the university of st. Thomas for college. Right now i want to go to st. Thomas, but after crunching all of the numbers and adding up all of my scholarships, grants, loans, and money that i have made from working since sixth grade i will still end up oweing st. Thomas about $5000. So u will have to work alot during the school year to come up with that money... I am asking you guys if there are any NS scholarships at all or any companys with some scholarships... I really want to go to st. Thomas so i am reaching out to you guys.

if your going to be in 5000 of debt just deal with it and take out a small loan. 5k debt is nothing for college.

Its not 5k in debt... Its 5k missing that i would have to make during the school year through work every year if that makes sense so basically its like this

My money in my savings account+
scholarships+
Grants+
Money i will be making during the year+
Loans
All equals...
Me being 5k short per year

Hopefully that makes sense

I took a class at Inver Hills and my experience was mehh. I would say go to St. Thomas because the difference in experience between those two schools would be worth the $5,000.

If I stay on my career plan which is to go to med school, after my 8 years are done I'm probably looking at being well over $160,000 in debt.

This isn't weed... You aren't measuring in Gs. Even if you measure your weed in Gs you should step up your game to Oz. ;)

Good luck in college dude I hope your aren't any sort of business major. Just take out a student loan for the the 5 grand. If that is all your in debt after college you'll be golden lots of people get lots more debt. I have a friend that is already over 100 grand in debt and it's the end of her sophomore year right now. If you really want to go to that school go there don't worry about the tiny amount of debt you'll be in after.

I assume your parents/guardian are not helping to pay at all? The FASFA generates an Expected Family Contribution based on your parents income and some other factors such as outstanding debt and additional children. If you really can't come up with a way to pay the $5,000 then just take out a loan to cover it. I know it may sound financially "dumb" now, but at the end of the day you will be glad. Unless of course you want to go to Inver Hills, then by all means go do so.

100% go to St Thomas. $5000 is NOTHING you will be able to pay that off very very easily and in a very quick amount of time when you graduate.

Median cost of 4 yrs of medical school is $270,000 at private institutions, $210,000 in-state at a public institutions (in addition to any debt you may have from undergrad). The average graduating debt is only less than that (170K last I saw) because many medical students come from families of wealth. After a while, it all becomes monopoly money...

In summary, go where you want to go OP. 5k is a drop in the bucket.

As someone who's in crippling debt already... I'd recommend just doing CC. Especially for the first two years, it's sooo worth it. Your social life might not be as great, but you'll save so much by going that route...

Plus, chances are you'll spend more than 5 grand at the end of the day, what with all the potential hidden fees you may very likely have to put up with.
