Is rap even music?

So I've been discussing this with a couple different people lately. Younger kids tend to think that rap is music, 100%. And the older folks tend to think that rap isn't musical at ALL.


What do you think?

I believe that rap can be considered music, but it doesn't have very much musical quality. And the choice of words in the songs is pretty stupid. Especially the song "I'm different" ... And lots of Lil Wayne songs. The words are pretty pointless and don't contain a lot of meaning. But that's just like my opinion, man

like i said, if you read that post, i'm self admittedly the idiot in the room. but honestly it didnt take me more than 10 minutes or so to write that up. i've got a lot to say about music--i think about it a lot. maybe we all got lucky to catch me on a day like that?

Rap is for sure music. You can't judge a genre of music based on shitty modern rappers. I agree that modern rap (With a few exceptions) is ASS. You need to listen to classic rap like from the 90s. Songs like Keep ya head up, Regulate, N.Y. State of mind, Brooklyn's Finest and so on. As Eminem once said "It is not about lyrics anymore, it's about a hot beat and a catchy hook"

Lol NS is so dumb. I was just using the logic of someone comparing a band like grateful dead to a hip hop artist to show how subjective that argument is in defining "real music". Like there is always going to be a different genre that somehow has more musical merit than another in any persons opinion. Just because two genres sound different don't mean that one is better than another.
