Pretty sure they know more than you and your minor. Also, if you look back over the decades, there have been several little "pauses" before, so it's no evidence for climate change being halted. This pause is very misleading and in no way means climate change isn't still happening at full force. Nice!

That said, I think the happy medium is to be a badass and use a bow and arrow instead of a gun. Guns are for wimps who can't handle drawing a bow, or figuring out how to throw knives and use hidden blade attacks like an assassin or even how to load a crossbow.
Besides, everyone expects you to be defending your house with a gun. NOBODY expects you to use the Home Alone approach. Get creative. Guns are weak.
