Core Shot Issues

I have a core shot on one of my skis about an inch and a half long. I took it to a shop and got it fixed(with ptex i believe) and 3 days of riding later it was shit again.

How long is ptex supported to last? and is there a better way to fix a core shot? Is there something I should do differently to help maintain the bases better?

If it's real bad they can do something called a base weld, but most shops will want to at least try the ptex first. As for how long ptex lasts it really depends on how well the material bonded to the base of the ski. Sometimes it lasts forever on the first try and sometimes it's a real bitch.

I totally forgot what it was called but on some core shots ptex doesn't work very well and will come out so you have to use something else. Im totally spacing on what its called tho haha. But you could always epoxy the bottom part then put ptex on the top part and that should stay in.

Ptex doesn't stick to core worth a damn. It's made to stick to base material, so it always falls out of core shots.

Nowadays any core shot I get just gets a base patch straight away. Done right you will never have another issue with it, because it's basically the exact same thing as a die-cut base.

Sorry for thread jacking, but is there anything actually wrong with core shots? Do they slow you down, ruin bases, eat away at the core?

They expose the core. If water gets to the core it can rot. Also it slows you down a bit.

edge grip is the stuff I have on a core shot and its held in for a long ass time. A chunk of it just ripped off in the preaseason so it needs another patch job, but its held up to some absurd rail abuse

Any core shot needs to be filled with a base weld. The exposed core needs to be scored or scuffed up. This creates little cuts that allow the base weld somewhere to "grab" onto the core. As well, after laying the base weld, it needs to be pressed into the base before it hardens. This removes any air bubble. I like to let it sit for an hour or so before scraping the excess material.

Im sure this is too late but if you put plastic epoxy in the shot and mix in shavings of ptex and clamp it down the ptex will actually stay. Then it will be a little rough so you just do your normal ptex candle drip repair to smooth it out.

u can actually feel it. i got this pretty big shot in one of my skis, and felt this kinda tugging when I was skiing underfoot.

or maybe I was hallucinating

Could have just been a crappy repair. I've had that before. Might be worth taking to someone else to get it fixed before you try something more drastic.

i heard the closer to the edge it is the less likely ptex is to work, maybe im wrong because the only thing that would affect this is the edge anchors. i was told when its near the edge they need to do a base weld. Any truth to this

Yeah I got a core shot on my surfaces a few years ago and it was right along the edge. Luckily it didn't ruin the edge. Anyway they did a base weld and it's been great ever since.

btw OP i would learn to ptex yourself all you need is a ptex candle anda lighter to do the job. that way if it keeps falling out you can either keep fixing it your self or take it to the shop to do a base weld or whatever they think will work

I have a moderate core shot on one of my skis I use all the time. I bought a bunch of ptex candles and ptex it every couple weeks or so. I don't know enough to do a base weld and its not that bad. So I generally just ptex it up real nice if it starts to wear down.

Its very easy to do. Basically just melt the ptex onto the shot after scuffing it up a little so it can grab on and then scrape it off

Candle repairs don't last. A core shot needs a welded coating of METAL GRIP first, then finish the repair with regular wire or ribbon.

Yuuuup. The shop I was taking them to is kind of awful and I didn't realize it at the time. I ended up doing it myself and it's held up for last part of my season, through a summer on snowflex and a PVC/Turf set up and several pre season rail jams so I'd say it's pretty solid for now. Those skis are about to be declared my beater skis anyways. I think they should be good for now.
