"The Interview" Shitstorm

So, this movie "The Interview" is apparently about two guys sent on an undercover mission to kill Kim-Jong Un. The recent Sony hackers are pretty much confirmed to be North Korean now, and Un issued a statement that any public showing of this movie will be seen as an act of terrorism. Is it possible that they could just not show this movie after advertising it so much? Surprised there wasn't a thread about this yet.

I hope two things come of this.

1. Sony or "someone" releases the movie on Christmas day online. By someone I mean Sony but pretend it wasn't them and they got hacked again.

2. All of our allies and pretty much the rest of the world make movies about assassinating Kim Jong Un.

skier_boy26Such an easy conspiracy theory, but the problem is Sony would not 1) go through as much down time as they did over the past month and 2) willingly release as much data about their company simply to make a shitty movie earn some more dough.

Sure, it's on pretty much every news site in most parts of the world, and that's fantastic for publicity, but the ends don't justify the means.


Sony got hacked, obviously they wouldn't go through all of this just as a publicity stunt.

Them "pulling" the movie is a huge marketing scheme though. They're spinning the hack job to build up huge hype over this movie. I guarantee this movie get's released within 6 weeks and Sony absolutely cleans up. How many people on your FB have been like "I wasn't even going to see this movie, but now I am because fuck north korea!!!"

Definitely gaining publicity and tons of people now wanting to see it. I think those type of movies must be targeted for a younger audience because I never find them funny.

In a wide-ranging news conference Friday, President Obama called it "a mistake" for Sony Pictures not to release "The Interview," predicted that change in Cuba is inevitable and tried to make the case for a resurgent United States.

"They made a mistake," Obama said, adding that he wished Sony would have "spoken to me first. I would've told them, 'Do not get into a pattern in which you're intimidated by these kinds of criminal attacks.'"

I can sympathize with the cinemas who decided to cancel it. Sure, it would be nice to stick it to North Korea, but what CEO is going to risk lives over a movie? I mean, its highly unlikely but it could be possible if they somehow got some people over here or whatever.

Then again, its not really about the movie at this point, its about not giving terrorism and inch. So I don't know. I'm on the fence.

Alright guys this is going to be unpopular for sure, but I'm going to say it anyway (unlike sony).

I don't think that the movie was really cancelled because of anyone having or not having the necessary testicles to release it, but rather because of the principle of it. It would not, for example, be alright to make a movie about the assassination of barack obama, or george w bush, or even stephen harper. That shit would be banned faster than you can say "surveillance state", and if you don't believe me just look at the facts. Here in canada, our esteemed prime minister has actually banned numerous satirical plays that were all set to make fun of him personally. It wouldn't have been anything more than a few jokes about his hair piece (which is terrible) and he still didn't let that stand. So why the fuck is anyone surprised that a movie featuring the comedic assassination of a living world leader is being taken as an insult? How could it possibly be any more inflammatory, especially considering that north korea and america aren't exactly on joking terms?

The concept is comparable to someone from the russian regime making a funny film about killing barack obama in cold blood. Just sit back for a second and imagine the repercussions of something like that... Of course north korea isn't exactly progressive in terms of rights and freedoms (they have literally hundreds of thousands of slaves living in work camps) so how can you expect them to take something like that even as well as the canadians? The concept looks like the idea for a charlie chaplain style propaganda film, or one of those scary daffy duck anti-nazi propaganda clips from disney! Although it isn't acceptable to make films about killing living people, not showing them because of threats to the country is definitely pretty spineless the wrong reason to pull it, because it only encourages them to keep making threats.

Ok well i haven't seen every shitty american movie that went straight to netflix soooo....

The point is the us is one of the only countries where mixes of satire and political violence in films is acceptable. Something like that would be banned even in more liberal democracies such as canada or sweden (where the speilburg classic et is banned). Hollywood can't expect to get away with making movies like that.

And who the fuck wanted to watch this movie anyway? The premise was stupid, and pineapple express was shit and so was spring breakers.

Why do you keep referring to other countries? This is about America, not some pussified 3rd world countries like Canada or Sweden. You might as well state that the American prison system can't be all that bad because its good in Norway.

OxcilicIt's not about what America wants. North Korea might seem like a joke to you as they are so far away and their missiles can't reach the States. But they are right on Sony's doorstep.

I thought that movie was hilarious. Franco was excellent, Rogen was pretty lame though, I'm getting tired of him doing the same thing in every movie
