Dream garage/workshop ideas

hey guys,

I'm buying a place in Pemberton in the near future, and one of my must haves is at least a double sized garage.

I've always wanted a nice heated garage to work on projects and basic car maintenance. I'm a gun nut so a work area to clean guns and reload ammo is needed, and a place to tie flies for fly fishing and a ski tuning bench of course. Putting my gun safe in the garage is also an idea i'm considering.

I'm thinking one half of the garage be a man cave area to watch the game or whatever on a nice tv, and the other half for the car and work area. i don't park my car in a garage most of the time so it will most likely be on the driveway, so ill have tons of room in the garage. im going to covert a old fridge to a kegerator which should be dope.

I'm an electrician and have friends in a lot of the other trades, so if you can dream it, I probably know someone that can build it. what are some cool things you guys have in your garage or your parents garage? i've thought of a ton of ideas, but i really want to see what other people have in their work shops and garages.

Pot lights in the soffits outside that are activated by a motion detector. Remember to run 3 wire of the motion detector

oh yeah, ive gotten some ideas from the workshops at NAIT. retractable air hose and power cords will be in there for sure. also a wall mounted shop vac.

4 foot mini ramp with extension to ceiling. Music equipment. Want to get a new outlet put in for a decent welder at some point. Unless you have a longtime girlfriend or wife that wont let you watch the game inside i see know reason to watch in the garage

we have a work bench, a giant one-piece sectional sofa on casters that we roll just outside the garage door on sunny days, a pool table, and a bar with a mini fridge. The goal by next season is to have cable out there and a big tv.

The issue with a pool table, is that it takes up a full two-car garage if you do it right. I mean i has to be centered-- you can do stuff around the perimeter, but it has to be centered. We are lucky because we have a huge unfinished basement which works as our extra space/shop.

One good idea if you don't have the space for a pool table but want some fun in your man-cave half if a shuffle board table.

If you're planning on reloading and tying flies, wouldn't it be better to have a space that's inside and won't be affected by humidity and temperature changes like a garage? I think your firearms would appreciate being stored inside.

As for a shop, i like to have a workbench on casters so it can be moved around. A mini fridge is all I need for my beer.

The garage will be heated in the winter and I have a dehumidifier in my safe, not too worried about humidity affecting the guns.

a parts washer will probably come in handy depending on what you plan on doing. Also some metal fab tools would be nice (especially if you already have a welder or plan on getting one)

I don't have a welder right now but I will be prewiring an outlet for one forsure. I don't really skate anymore or play music so I don't think I'll be adding that stuff.

Watching the game is key, I wanna be able to putz and tinker around in the garage and watch TV at the same time. Or have friends over after fishing or biking or whatever and have a couple beers in the garage with the TV is key.

Storage is key. If you have sports equipment like skis, bikes, whatever out there some hangers and shelving can go along way to keep things tidy and free up space.

oh ye, ill definitely be rigging up some nice overhead shelving for seasonal stuff to free up some floor space.

Two tvs. One decent size one for the chill zone, one small 22" on a cantilever arm above the workbench. That way you can reload or tie flies and be able to see the game without having to turn around.

Easiest way to do things would be getting a receiver (home theater amplifier) that does HDMI switching as well. Pretty much all the decent ones these days do audio and video. From the output of the receiver use an HDMI splitter to run signal to both tvs. There's other ways to do things, but that's the cheapest.

You can never have too many TVs! Source: I'm in home automation.

Also man caves are rad, congrats on yours!

2 tvs is a sick idea. i can pick up a smaller one for a decent price as well. the trick is to think of everything i want so i can get the wiring done before drywall. i would hate to drywall and then realize i want to add something or whatever.

i have an 8 foot work bench, a bunch of shelves, an air compressor, an engine lift, an air compressor, a kegorator, a mini fridge, and a bar. it's pretty much got everything i could ever ask for.

Drywall? Plywood instead and you can screw shelving or anything really wherever you want. 2 tvs vs one projector? And fuck it, other then basic receptacles, switches and lighting run your electrical surface for your shop equipment ei welder, compressor, dust collector etc.


Also, I have recently considered looking at places in Pemberton. I'm still working 2 in 2 out in mines as an electrician so we're in a similar position

nah ive thought about plywood but i really want dry wall. im going to go all out and i just like the look of a drywalled garage. just has more of a finished look that i like.

My dad has his air compressor mounted up on the wall out of the way and has the air hoses plumbed in to different outlet points with retractables at each one, also, I ran a couple of circuits out to my work bench, then wired up some plugs and a bench light.

Another thing to think about and it might not be necessary but when I wired my FIL's shop (100' by 50' by 20'tall big) I mounted flouescent lights on the walls about 8ft high, the light shines right under the hood of his big rigs, could come in handy I guess, just a thought, but it takes up room where shelving could be

have you seen any decent products for running TV cables behind the wall? i wanna be able to remove and add cables, so i was thinking of running a conduit from behind the tv to the entertainment center. i cant stand the look of exposed cables behind the tv.

They used a flexible hose type conduit (available at most hardware stores) in my house that goes from my fire place to the entertainment center, but it's a real bitch to get HDMI through, I would honestly run some 1" or larger EMT or PVC with soft 90's and use 4" deep boxes with the drywall reducing rings. That or something to that effect. The flexible PVC shit might be easy to install but it is a bitch to run wires in or at least the way they installed it in my house.
