NS, what is it about skiing?

Everybody has a different perception on skiing and it's always nice to hear from different skiers what they purely enjoy about this amazing sport and what brought them to it.

For me, nothing says self accomplishment like hiking a steep spine in the BC and taking a spiritual line all the way down on some fresh, plush snow. Just the "no worries" mindset and to where you don't think about one single thing other than your line on the mountain. That's what did it for me and to me, there is absolutely nothing like it.

What do you enjoy most about skiing?

To me, skiing is all about doing tricks and having fun with frends. Thats what I enjoy most in skiing

the fact that when youre riding rent could be due girl could be tripping job could be lost, but in that 6 hrs of the day thats all that matters. its an escape and a reality that we all love. I personally love the drive to learn a new trick and getting hyped with friends. also some beers now and again help along the day!

The anticipation in Packing up the car the night before then waking up early as fukkk the next morning driving while it's still dark with a large coffee. Getting to the top of the mountain just as the sun comes up.

Then as soon as you get on that first lift you have no worries in the world.

i think it was pollard or someone on NS that said it a few years back, but i see skiing as art. the mountain as your canvas to which you can do whatever you please with, and you and your skis as the tools to which you create the art. in other words, i like skiing because I can ski whatever i want, however i want, and i get the most pleasure from doing it.

Nicolas Müller said almost the exact same thing and it stuck to me ever since I heard him say it. The mountain is like a canvas, and no picture is painted the same.

The perfect balance of a meditative state and alert,athletic and challenging yet artistic and creative. And it is the freest feeling in the world. Whether it's hauling ass down a trail, slaying the park, or all of our favorite, deep blower pow in the trees. Whenever someone asks what I find so enjoyable about spending a day in 15 degree weather sliding on snow I always lead with "It is the most freeing experience you can ever feel" and I hold that to be true

I love the smell of the ski hill, I love practicing and working hard at something and being able to see and feel the results, honestly I have never felt so happy and free as I do when I am skiing

I had the realization that skiing is art a year or two ago. I began to unleash my creative, visual mind on hill and I've never skied better.

I had a longterm girlfriend ask me after 6 years of dating if I loved skiing more than her. I said no, but she knew the real answer and we later broke up. When you get to be an old fuck like me people do not think it is cute to ski 120+ days a year. It seems excessive and selfish. Society frowns upon scum like me. My friends and family start questioning my motives after life threatening injuries and losing friends to avalanches. I think mainstream society ideals and norms are fucked. I think most of the people in this country secretly want ebola to invade their col-de-sac's and kill them, because hey at least it would be something exciting. Jeremy Jones said something in Higher that really clicked with me and I was kinda drunk, but it was something about when he's in the mountains things just make sense. Skiing is the only thing in my weird life that makes sense. I have tried pretty much every drug except bath salts, but nothing makes me giggle and feel like a child like skiing.

When I was younger I did gymnastics and after I fractured my back I wasn't able to compete anymore. I had skied since I was 3 so I spent that winter out on the hill all the time and it sort of replaced gymnastics in a way. I got into park after my friend introduced it to me and it's a really similar kind of sport as gymnastics. The whole idea of progressing for yourself instead of being on a team is extremely similar. It's just less strict and more open to what you want. I love that about it. Also, tramp progression is awesome because gymnastics translates really really well to it and air awareness comes really naturally. I just love skiing in general though. The feeling of riding through fresh pow, carving, bombing hills, going in and out of trees, hitting jumps and feeling like your weightless. It's a thing of it's own and I fell in love with it all.

same with me, it has definitely helped shape my skiing to what it is today. the moment you realize freedom and expression are at your fingertips, sky is the fuckin limit.

Best part about skiing for me is being able to do it how i want to do it. It's not like other sports where you have to listen to coaches and go to practices. This might sound a little weird, but some of my favorite times on the mountain are just cruising/hot lapping through the park by myself, not having to slow down for anyone.
