Hey guys, there's something in skiing that needs to change...

There's a pretty big difference hating on an Olympic athlete and dismissing an edit because of somebody's gender. I just don't even see the point in half the comments. "Tits or gtfo" and shit like that is just stupid. Cool, you get to giggle to yourself or some shit like that but she isn't going to show you her tits and it has no relevance to the edit at all. It's a matter of growing the fuck up and realizing that what you're posting is fucking stupid any way you slice it. That goes for hate on all edits, especially those from people who aren't super good. Shit, don't people on this website like to ski? Some kid lands his first 7, fuck yea! We need to get a little perspective and start realizing that we are all one and the same and that saying negative things to any other human but especially any other skier is akin to shooting yourself in the foot. Think of all the things we have in common and the deep connections we automatically share by being skiers. We are a family and it's time we started acting like it, you don't tell another family member that something sucked even if it wasn't on the same level that you think you could have done it doesn't mean it sucked and if that's all you have to say than just keep it to yourself because it's unintelligent and infantile. If you can't think enough to identify exactly what "sucked" and say something to help the person to hone their skills then kindly refrain from commenting at all. But I thought we were supposed to have learned this in pre-school. And as for women they have a different anatomy, as NS members are so keen on pointing out, so just as a short stockier person might have an easier time with specific tricks than a tall skinny one and visa versa women can surely learn some things faster and some slower than men. I think the biggest difference is most definitely not in skill but mostly that men are built to be able to survive impacts a little better so maybe it actually takes more finesse and natural skill to be a woman skier I don't know. But I don't think the two should really be compared or that any two skiers should be compared in a way of who is better or who wins as skiing to me is art and as they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder so art can never really be judged or even really defined only appreciated or not.
Bottom line: strive to encourage and appreciate skiing on every level and to love all those around you, have empathy, give compliments, and have fun.

I totally agree. Women and skiing have gotten large amounts of hate. When i was at windells a bunch of dudes were rippin on girls for not being good. Which is why there are girl tramp and skate clinics and ski groups.

I am the only girl who skis in the park at my home mountain, Its tough when you want to compete. Some times i can because they don't have a category that i can compete in. It is so unfair its not even funny. but the pros of being in comps with guys is that you push to get better at skiing to get notices/win.

Oh and one last thing. We should treat girls skiing park just like anyone else, not like if they're special. No one's really chearing when a guy clears a rail. If it was the same for girls, I'm sure they'd just want to push themselves harder instead of being like "Oh it looks like I'm good I can do front 2s". i don't know one girl who got it fucking easy in skiing. not one. because all i see is girl push and push and push to get into comps, to get their own comps, to be treated like equals. push to get their own movies.

This is an excellent thread. My two cents: I've always thought that when the skiing community stops expecting so little from female skiers and eliminates the gap in stoke between genders, chicks will start absolutely charging. Discrimination cripples confidence more than anything else, and that's the most important thing a skier needs to start hucking. Look at climbing, look at kayaking, look at mountain biking. Women and men are on the same par - and judging this statement based on the ways of the competitive world is total bullshit, of course there will be more men, sexism thrives in the corporate world and we shouldn't look at the product of sexism as validation that men out-perform women. These sports have come so much farther in this issue than we have, they're practically gender neutral, at the recreational level at least.

This problem of disrespecting ladies is not just in the ski community but in society in general. However, instead of conforming to this prevalent trend in society let's lead the way in transforming our ski community and start respecting ladies on the slopes.

You all seem to play nice on the mountain, it shouldn't be any different here. Enough is enough NS.

Some really good points in this thread, but I have to stir the pot a bit and call out the ladies.

A lot of sexism and inappropriate comments towards the ladies of this site are overlooked because us women encourage them. Now before I get jumped on for this, every pinkname take a step back and look at how we interact with boys on this site. There are less than 5 actively posting girls on here who haven't been flirty towards members at some point, shit I'm guilty of it too. And for those who will deny it, shut the hell up. You've done it too. And its reaching the point where if we want the depreciation to stop, we have to conduct ourselves better. There are several active posters who it seems like half the shit they say on these forums is a response to some guy objectifying them, and its not telling them to quit. Its getting worse too. I think that you are doing something awesome for the community by posting this, and even more for actually reprimanding sexism and slander on the site, but I also think that you are missing out on a few things that contribute a lot to the nature of this kind of behavior.

1. Yes, girls ski, and some ski well. Some catch hate and even more catch an mtv/porn corrupted version of admiration that usually comes off more than a little rape-y. But saying that they are hot chicks that can ski isn't doing any women a single favor man. They are people. They are skiers; of course they can ski! Don't you think that the initial distinction between men and "hot chicks...some of them even better than you" is in itself a bit demeaning? Yeah, I know we are men, and if you are heterosexual, it's almost impossible not to see women through a sexual lens. But after acknowledging our primal instincts, maybe we should also do our due diligence as fellow humans and recognize that calling them hot chicks that can ski would be no different than prefacing every male ski video directed comment with "hot dude".



2. Being sexual is fun for girls and boys! Sometimes it is totally inappropriate to make sexual comments, especially on a website that really has no context in sexual behavior. However, it would be completely ridiculous to ignore the fact that almost guy and every girl on this page is probably between the ages of 15 and 40, and reasonably horny. With this in mind, is it inappropriate to post a "hottest skier girl" thread, or find yourself pausing the end of Katrina's season edit 10 times in a row? No! It's human nature, and it's a compliment to whoever the man or woman holding your attention may be. Context is everything, and as long as you aren't detracting from skiing ability, you aren't doing any harm with a genuine compliment, or even an appropriate and polite gesture of flirtation! This is especially pertinent in humor. To reiterate, if you are commenting about how bad you want to stick your dingaling in some girl on her season edit (be it good or shitty), you suck. If you acknowledge that you are a fan of her skiing, and that she is also drop dead gorgeous, you are probably fine (though we are all lame ass dorky skiers that don't deserve attention from women at all tbh). If you comment on any ski videos that were edited to ray j...everything is pretty much in the clear.



3. Sorry I know my rant has gotten way too long already. Last thing. This is the internet. I recently made a thread that was kind of condemning the culture of freeskiing, and whining about why we are all so mean. After a few days, the responses stopped, and scrolling through, I realized that they were almost all really really positive and encouraging, or at least analytical and intelligent. On Maad Maude 3 (you mod's may have done some cleaning up on this so correct me if my data is inaccurate), there are some 45 comments or so. There are only two or three that aren't directly complimenting her skiing or giving her props for something non sexual. The only sexual comment states "U cute girl". I mean I know that isn't what Maude is looking for when she puts out an edit that she worked really hard for, but it's not like it was mean or demeaning to her video...it just states that someone thinks she's cute. No big deal. Kinda nice actually. What I'm getting at is that for a website stuffed to the brim with hormonal middle to upper class white boys, we're not so bad. In fact, I would wager that we are in the top 5 nicest and least sexually aggressive forum sites with our kind of traffic on the internet. This is coming from someone who thought the exact opposite like a month ago, and was totally served by everyone's reciprocal kindness and lack of trolling.



Anyway, sorry this rant got so out of hand, and I'm not trying to say that you are wrong, because you are totally right. I think it just needs to be acknowledged that this isn't a black an white issue, and that working towards a culture of equality is better promoted by positivity (and a little troll banning) than feeling like we are all one out of line comment away from kissing ns goodbye. chicks oggle hot skiers all the time, the difference is we keep it to ourselves.

focusing on a woman's looks after she put hard work into something, instead of the hard work she put into something, is demeaning, and that will never change. accept that, move on.

At my home hill not only am I the only female park skier but I am the only park skier. The snowboarders have been way more supportive and encouraging of me than anyone on newschoolers. Skiers should be helping skiers. We both have skis on our feet and are out there for the same reason. So newschoolers help us.

well she definitely shouldn't feel like shit like you said NS loves her content and she rips. It sucks how many kids leave messed up comments but unfortunately I don't think that immaturity can be avoided on sites like this, especially when a lot of users are young teens. This thread will hopefully help bring attention to it, and any comments like the one you referenced should just result in an ip ban, that's absurd. All women skiers deserve respect, and I'm always stoked to see more pinknames throwing down.

It's usually about pro male skiers, which is actually very similar to the way men as a demographic direct their attention to female skiers. And I agree that purely focusing on it is demeaning. If Gus or Banks or one of the male pro skiers that get recognition for their looks had an intro like Maude's to their edits, that showed them accentuating their smile, eyes, things that people generally recognize as attributes to a good looking person, their would definitely be comments from girls (and probably guys too) acknowledging it, or saying flirtatious things about them. And that would be fine, just like it is in one of Maude's edits. The line is crossed when attraction is used as a platform to direct negativity towards someone's gender, skill, relevance in the sport, etc.. And that isn't something that women really do to men, and it's something that some men need to stop doing to women. Equality can be sexy if everyone respects each other.

You're right that you do it differently. Most women do it the way that men should. Also, most men do it in the way that men should. Keep in mind that the vast majority of this site and this sport are men, and it sucks, but that means that there is a higher number of shitty men than shitty women, just statistically speaking. So yeah women are less likely to be found saying things like that, but men the majority of men also aren't going to be found saying things like that.

also side note, I know that there are trolls out there and some of the things that men say to women in inappropriate situations are serious bullshit, but for the record, I think that the "pee in her butt" thing is actually a joke addressing how immature men can be, the punchline being men that actually say things like that, not women. And "lemme sit on your face" is actually kind of one that girls made up to jeer men...I mean that or it was made up by men with serious anatomic confusion. I really like the thread initiative by Bwalmer, but I have a huge problem with the phrasing "these are hot chicks who FUCKING SKI". I just dont understand why you would adress the issue of sexism in a thread just to end up say something sexist about girls. If girls are hot or not shouldnt be relevant in this context at all.

Its very annoying as a girl to first and foremost always be evaluated and judge based on your appearance and/or sexual promiscuity. I am fully aware of that guys are judged along societies gender norms too, but as a girl you are pretty much worthless if youre not deemed as attractive. I'm so fucking sick of seeing girls on here be treated as objects. Its very rare to see positive comments in the comment section that are not about whether the girl in question is hot or that you (bluenames) wanna tap that. Sure, its youre way of complementing them, but its also stupid and sexist.

BWalmerBut this happens CONSTANTLY. Since becoming a mod I'm constantly getting requests to have comments deleted that are sexually abusive and demeaning to women, I'm noticing it more and more. And that absolutely FUCKED up part...these are hot chicks who FUCKING SKI!!! Some of them even better than you. These are girls you could potentially hang out with on the slopes and have a good time with. But instead, we hate on them and call them a slut and ask them to show their tits. Not only do you make her feel bad, but you make yourself look like an ass AND you ruin it for everyone else.

This is so true. Anyone guy on here would be beyond stoked to have girls in their crew to shred and hang with. Yet, for some reason, they hate on the girls on the internet. Never understood it, and I am super glad that NS is taking more of a stance to make the hate go away. Good work!

If I say anything slightly controversial or disagreeable I feel like I am much more open to ad hominem attacks then if I were posting with a blue name. Women will never be as good as men at sports. Testosterone is the reason. Men naturally produce more of it which greatly aids in the production of muscle. Comparing women to men is akin to comparing a regular joe to a guy doping steroids. The regular joe is never going to have the performance gains of the guy doping. It's hard to say how much of the gap between men's and women's skiing is due to differences between the sexes, or simply due to the fact that the ratio of men to women on the slopes. Men greatly outnumber women in skiing, which means there is a much larger pool of candidates to bring best a brightest to light. I have a hard time finding other women to ski with because there aren't very many. Another gal mentioned in this thread she couldn't compete because her mountain couldn't get enough women together to hold a comp. The same is true where I ski. We need to get more women involved in the sport and stop complaining that they aren't as good as Tom Wallisch. There will probably always be a gender gap, but up and coming skiers like Kelly Sidaru are showing us that it might not be as wide as we thought if we give more young girls a chance to succeed in this sport.

I understand what you're saying, and the wording might be a bit off, but I view every girl who skis are "hot." I didn't necessarily mean it in the physical sense, but more in the "you should be attracted to girls who share your passion" sense. So to me, any girl on this site who is showing their love for skiing should be deemed "hot" no matter what they look like. I guess I should have made that more clear or worded it differently, but I guess since I was talking about female skiers as a whole, it was inferred that they're all hot.
