personally I think its stupid to not wear a helmet skiing or doing anything risky (biking even) but I know the importance of mouthgaurds as well but never wear it skiing. I don't see a lot of people wearing them either. will it ever catch on?

Probably won't catch on. They're just a pain in the ass because they're uncomfortable and you always gotta take em' out to talk which is really annoying.

Probably not. In skiing you take a lot of hits to the head. You don't really take many to the teeth.

The only 2 times I can think of in 20 years that one would have helped me was when I was like 11. I couldn't get enough speed for the big jumps on the rental board I had one time. Sitting on my board down the hill and still couldn't clear it. Gave it one last shot all out and came up like 2 feet short and got knuckle raped, need my my face and had blood everywhere. Then another time like 6 years ago where another kid on park crew threw a rake to me instead of hanging it to me and it hit the ice weird and the end smashed me in the grill.

That's literally all I can think of and neither of those were that bad.

If you feel it's important wear one though. Nobody is going to make fun of you for it. Do whatever you want. Some people wear wrist guards some people wear impact shorts, at one point I wore knee pads. What ever you feel you need to do to be safe/comfortable do it. Don't wait for it to become a trend before you do it.

Just do it. If you decide you don't like it you can always take it out and throw it in your pocket.

That's not what they were designed for and as far as I know it's a total myth that they even prevent them. I think their was a study credible or not that showed some positives when getting hit in the jaw against those types of head injuries but even if that were true we're skiing not boxing/playing hockey etc.

And they're designed to protect your teeth and gums not your brain.

I've hit my head a shit ton of times so I've read about this stuff. Popped into my head when I saw the thread.

I have one in my pocket at all times. I don't wear it normally, but if I am dropping a cliff or doing something big in the park I will pop it it.

mouthguards are for preventing concussions not necessarily teeth protection. when your jaw clamps down after a hit to the head a mouthguard lessens the jarring of the jaw and it lessens conkies, idk really i have to wear one for hockey (with a cage) and it sucks

Find me where it says they were invented to prevent concussions and are still used this day for preventing concussions NOT keeping your teeth from getting smoked and lips and what not from getting all cut up.

Yeah, you need to go back and do some research. Show me evidence and studies that show mouthgaurds prevent concussions.

I wear a mouth guard everytime im in the park. after last season i cased a cork 9 and kneed myself in the jaw breaking it and knocking out 7 teeth. so yea wear a god dam mouth guard, if it can happen to me it can happen to you

It's not about me wearing them if they catch on, I was just curious to see how many people wore them. Personally I don't wear one but I'm sure when the day comes I take a good knee to the face I'll change my mind. I like the idea of having one in a pocket just incase because I know I wouldn't need it all day.

I have some friends that use mouth guards while skiing.

If you are gonna wear body armor, you might as well use a mouth guard as well, no?

Last season I fell on a down tube doing a front swap and smashed my mouth, nearly knocking out one of my front teeth. Defs wish i had a mouthguard then but still dont have one

That's why I wear mine. Smashed my face into my knee= hole in my tongue. I didn't like that, so now I keep it in my pocket. There is no shame in popping it in over a cliff or at the top of the jump line.

I used to wear mouth guards. But I always lose them.

I was under the impression they helped with concussions. Until I decided to do some research. There is ZERO evidence they help prevent concussions, all the evidence is based on theory of 'force dissipation'.

So if you want to protect your teeth then great. But don't be fooled in thinking it does anything else.

Just from dicking around on google a bit.

Mouthguards became mandatory for high school football in 1962 and college in 1973. Helmets then were different than helmets now.

Also I'll take 28+ down votes and a thread of people arguing that mouthguards won't protect your mouth and should only be worn to protect against concussions. Lawl

After some quick googling, it looks like mouthguards don't really do much for concussions. Check your sources kids

That being said, I started wearing one last year after I almost bit through my tongue. I had to get it stitched up, which might be the most miserable experience I've had. I've had a whole bunch of tongue-biting incidents, but that was the last straw. I have one on me that I wear when jumping off cliffs, and on park jumps too.

Long story short, if you don't wanna get tongue stitches, mouthguard isn't a bad idea. You do look like a fuckin jock tho

+1 to abortionator, I went and did some good reading (medical journals and the sort) about the whole mouthguard-concussion thing after I rang my bell a couple of times.

It's an urban myth and I'm surprised by how many people preach about it like it's gospel truth. If you need something stronger than the BMJ to tell you it's a myth then you probably believe the moon landing was faked and Obama was born in Africa.

The oft-quoted article here: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2014/05/140501101133.htm in support of the argument is a press-release by a dentistry academy telling people to spend more money at their dentists. Sounds credible to me.

This study:

All that said, dentists are damn expensive and getting hit in the mouth sucks, so if you think it's a good idea to wear one, do it.

I have to wear one for hockey a I've been hit pretty hard and never had a concussion, in hockey you are taking hits to the head that mouth guards help with, but skiing you are taking different hits, none to the chin or across the face, but I think while skiing they do provide confidence and I feel safer with one in than without so

I wear one in the park and if the slopes are filled with beginners. Took a little kids helmet straight to my jaw because he couldn't stop coming in hot to the lift line... about bit my tongue off. Friends give me sh!t but I'd rather buy ski gear/lift passes than reconstructive mouth procedures. They get pretty uncomfortable but you just get used to it.

You actually did say they were only for concussions. They aren't going to help protect your teeth/mouth and are only worn to protect against concussions.

Used one for a week, got pretty sick of it as I had to take it out everytime to talk and it got pretty gross as well ... Probably cause I kept it in my coat pocket... but that's besides the point. If you wanna rock one go for it, i felt a ton more protected but it was just too obnoxious for my liking

The thing about cups is that they are uncomfortable to begin with and if you slam on a rail it's still going to ride up and not offer much protection. If preventing a frontal impact then sure but from below? I dunno. Still might help I guess.
