Hunting Season Hype Thread

This thread is for the hunters of NS, if you're against hunting don't bother posting your shit in here :)



So hunting season just kinda started here in CT... Early season that is, early goose season in CT's North Zone is from Sept. 2-30, then re-starts with ducks in early October... It's also squirrel season too so i might try to blast some of those limb-rats...

Geese aren't really here yet just a few flocks here and there, hopefully some more come in numbers before the 30th

Just bought my firearms hunting license, HIP permit, and federal+state migratory bird stamp. Ready to bag my first ducks/geese this fall+winter.

Anyone one NS ready to hunt this year?


I took my hunter safety course around mid-fall last year so only got to hunt for waterfowl a little. Here's a pic of my spot, I know this year i'll whack 'em

It's the first week of bow hunting here in Montana. Got a nice archery bull last year so the pressure is on to get a bigger one now. Any big game hunters?

My uncles go elk hunting in Colorado every year. I would like to go next year with them if college doesn't conflict.

i might go after whitetail this year. I'm not huge into hunting but i might try it out.

Got a remington 870 wingmaster 12 gauge. It's a beautiful gun.
I need to get a slug barrel for it though, right now it's set up for turkeys.

Threads though.

I'm starting to get stoked for this year's deer season

Food plots all set up, finishing touches on my blind are completed, been checking my trail cameras and I'm starting to see some pretty good action

Gonna kill Swamp Rape this year

Also just ready for all the characters that our deer camp brings out and having good times with them

I went to go get my deer licence yesterday from Fleet Farm. Found out though that because of are cold winter last year the whitetail population is really down so they are not giving any doe permits in our sector. Guess i'll have to go for Da Turdy Point Buck this year.

Haven't deer hunted before but my dad did a ton, got private land permit this year, deer stand... and my dads rifle (don't remember on the top of my head) If I can get out and do some of that that'd be fun. Rather go for ducks and geese though.

Archery bull? Respectable. I've been missing out on hunting since I started college, so I'm just building up my preference points down here in CO. Hopefully I can take my pic of area by the time I get back into hunting. I miss it a lot.

Big game constitutes most of my hunting, but turkey is fun as hell. And pheasant. Pheasant is a blast and the meat is delicious.

Thanks man! Hopefully it will be worth the wait for you, I know hunting in Colorado is tough unless you have good land.

I haven't had pheasant in forever, it's so delicious. If anyone has a good wild meat recipe they should share.

There is most likely tons of "state" land up there, or province or whatever...

but on those public lands you can most likely hunt, right now in CT most geese are going to grassy fields, then theyll move to corn fields that were cut down, then into water before it freezes... usually... Ducks are starting to pop up a bunch on the lake in my backyard, i dont know when the migrations are in northern alberta though. I'd start on those public lands... some of them are gold mines

Do you have a lot of agriculture up there? If so you can ask a farmer if you can hunt on their land.

Get some goose shells or silhouettes if you're on a budget. I'm not a big silhouette fan but I've heard they work. Set them up on a field. Or if they have a slough you can throw out some duck or goose floaters.

Another idea is pass shooting. Set up in a spot where ducks and/or geese are regularly flying over. Probably between a slough and a field and take them as they go over. No decoys needed. This takes some decent scouting and make sure the birds aren't too high where you set up.

Wow, travel to New York or somewhere where there is too many!

I'm interested in hunting and have a Benelli 12 gauge and a Savage Arms .270. I also did the safety course. I just need a solid good teacher and I'd be golden.

Hell yeah. I never hear someone getting stoked for moose season in my parts because it's so rare you actually draw for moose. Canadians, eh? What 30-06 are you using?

Missed out on a chance at a doe tag this year as they get gobbled up pretty quick where I hunt in northern PA, might still grab one down here though closer to Philly.

Stoked to try some other kinds of hunting this year, haven't gone small game since I was a wee tike and I've never hunted any kind of migratory bird. Wouldn't mind going after duck or some doves for sure.

I need to get my Firearms licence before I can go out hunting, but I am actually pretty stoked to get it. My dad has had a 30-06 for me for a little while he has just been waiting on me to get my licence. After that I'm probably going to go for some deer or moose(Hunting ducks and grouse is pretty much a must for me though. It was mostly what me and my dad and stepdad went out hunting for). I actually would love to go bag a mountain goat too. I have friend that has hunted bears with a bow. Bear meat isn't for me, but I think it would be an intense hunt.

Never knew that there was that many people into hunting on NS.

I hunt south of International Falls, MN and normally we have plenty of deer around (enough to be selective). But the past couple winters have been really hard on them because it has gotten down on several occasions to -20F and it rarely got above 10F last year from like January to mid February last year. And on top of that, the Timber Wolf's have been eating them up so there isn't much left up there. I have a Browning 7mm but a couple of my cousins have .270's and they work great. As for the teaching part, just ask to go with (An old timer)or someone who has been out for a while and they will show you the ropes.

The latest episode of the Joe Rogan Experience podcast features a hunter and 3 weeks ago, he had Steve Rinella on who is on the show Meateater. I highly recommend these podcasts for any hunting enthusiasts who like comedy, hunting talks, hunting ethics, history etc. Especially the episodes with Rinella, he is a fucking boss. Rogan also has had other hunters too. Let me know and I can point you in the right direction!

Heading out in a few hours. I'm going to go try a new spot we haven't really hunted before that looks prime.

If I can get an elk this year I'm going to go after some wolves, anybody got any tips for me? Seems that unless you're trapping them it's pretty hard to cross paths with them.

why hunt wolves? dog meat is not very tasty when it comes to game meat.

so far this season i have struck out on my caribou, sheep and moose tags. my freezer is getting uncomfortably low. i did get a rock ptarmigan, with a rock, ironically enough. grouse season started not too long ago here but i have not seen any so far. and i need to get my duck stamp so i can go get some cranes/waterfowl.

Reminton 700, with Nikon optics and a Bi-pod. Yeah I'm moose hunting in Ontario, we get tags every year....same with Bear tags. Lucky to come from a place where there are more moose/bear then people.

Yeah, there are tons of lakes/ Skeg holes that the ducks hang out in all the time. I'm not too sure about migration patterns because they are already up here and migrate south when it's cold.

Have you ever had any problems with that gun? I had an uncle who had his randomly fire in his truck twice. Well he was a cocaine addict as well so he might have been seeing things.

Ballin. I was blessed enough to inherit a Ruger M77 Mountain Rifle with Zeiss optics. My dad worked for Zeiss for about 20 years, so he would get all kinds of deals on binoculars, scopes, etc.

Fuck, do I miss hunting.

Well I got one grouse today. Sorry no pic, decided not to bother doing that. We got into a mess of them but our dog kept flushing them way out in front of us and we couldn't get shots off on them. So that was frustrating but overall a fun hunt.

Moose hunting season started two weeks ago here in northern Sweden. Moose is the big thing, what most people who hunt look forward to. In my are there's been around 200 shot so far I think.

I haven't got my hunting license, so I'm not hunting. Wouldn't be hunting moose though, because I don't belong to any of the hunting groups. Would be grouse, hares and smaller deer for me. Next year. Stoked.

Yeah, they had a re-call on the triggers but i've had no issues with mine. Sent it in to Remington just in case. Got it back a week later cleaned and polished saying that there was no issues with the weapon.

Don't know where you are hunting them but one tip I've heard on grouse that can be helpful is while they are ungodly fast flyers, they don't go far. Watch the direction they go carefully and for as long as you can and head that way. Often times you can jump them again.

Funny you say that, i just had a talk the other day about hunting with a dog and one of the birds I was against hunting like that was grouse for that same reason. They are so fast I would prefer to be right on top of them when they go.

Yup I vastly prefer grouse hunting without a dog. The only dog I would think about using is a very good and well trained pointer. Its just easier without one

Yeah that's what we were doing. We flushed the same group like 3 times and then lost them.

i dont mean to start an argument because i am stoked that other people here are into hunting but grouse are slow birds, on the ground and in the air. the past few years the grouse/ and ptarmigan populations around here have been really low but this year they have been booming and i've been enjoying it a lot. I got a spruce grouse, in my front yard, with my bow yesterday. didnt take a decent picture but ill probably go out today and look for some more. here are my dogs with some grouse from last week.
and this is a rock ptarmigan from earlier this fall and the other ptarmigan is one i got with my knife a couple years ago.

My little brother has been out for the last few weekends with my dad, they're some hardcore archery hunters, deer and elk. We don't get much waterfowl here I really need to get into that though, looks super fun. I don't hunt much but I go out and film with my bro sometimes, he is pretty hardcore, going for deer, elk, wolf and maybe bear, he always gets picky though and passes up decent bucks till it is too late.

I dont know what kind of grouse you have but different species live in different habitats. Around here they are in very thick woods/brush so it kind of gives off the illusion that they are fast because you get such small windows to shoot at them. But yes they really are not that fast, especially on the ground
