What is skiing's tip of the hat?

Michael Jordan and the Jordan Brand just released a chilling ad, which begs the question -- what is skiing's tip of the hat?

We used to run a column in SBC Skier called "Tip of the Toque", but honestly, I don't really see many people tipping their toques in the middle of a powder day. Also, who is skiing's Jordan or Jeter?

A pole tap, or a pole clap? I'd say there's a difference between celebrating a stomped trick (/homerun) and giving someone the nod before they drop in (/stepping up to the plate).

First person who came to my mind was Dumont. Jordan and Jeter are two ultra competitive guys, were at the top of their sports, and were respected by almost everyone. Dumont works just as hard or harder than anyone else in skiing and you just have to respect what he has done in his career.

Anyways, skiing (an idividual sport) and base ball (team sport) carry different sets of respect, rules, and cultural norms. In skiing, especially free skiing, you have no opponent to tip your hat to. You are on your own when you drop in, and no one else matters. So, the real question is, IS there even an equivalent?

I usually just give a hoot or yell something loud at people when they do someone that gets me stoked. I find that a good amount people that are stoked on powder days and usually like to chirp in with the stoke, unless their racers, dont like racers, or the jaded locals who are really serious.

I would say it boils down to respect. Can you have respect for a fellow skier without compete ting against them? I'd say so.

id have to say the pole clap is since its the only thing i always see skiers do for eachother.

But usually after they did something not before. The classic headnod works in all sports though

The new sign of respect or appreciation for a skier on and off the mountain should be two in the pink one in the stink sign held like the classic rock hand signal. So instead of two fingers down in the middle just have the ring finger down.

Good distinction... I mean both are legit, but the pole tap is definitely the universal sign of 'go for it bro'.

I always give my guys a pole-tap or some paw +plus a couple words of encouragement as they drop in. And i always expect the same in return when it is time for me to step up.

I think in the competition scene is all the skiers talking about their runs and giving tips to each other. As well as all the skiers whatching each other runs. Whether it be your local rail jam or X games I think the respect is universal to cheer on your competitor and give them tips.

when i clean up someones yard sale, then get chased by them when they click back in because they are embarrassed. id expect compensation in regions, or at least a beer. anyways- i think its a tall tee thing, this is why i never will go skiing again. tall tee is a strange British cavalry thing.

well given how the hat tip is a sign of respect and good luck before performance, i'd say the equivalent in skiing would be a few different things depending on the person.
If its ur homie at the drop in with you, a simple high five, first bump, or pole tap. If its someone from far away, maybe a hang loose sign would do the trick or some pole clapping.
But for many kids who stand around watching people in a park all day, it's nothing. It's standing around, not making any gestures or any form of acknowledgment and simply waiting for someone to land a sick trick or stomp a sick line. It really all depends on the scene. Big mtn, its the pole tap for sure.

I generally tap ski poles before starting a run. Kinda like a high five but with ski poles.

the pole tap is like the fist bump of encouragement when you are sitting at the drop in with someone about to nail a sick trick. the pole clap is like the round of applause from anyone in eyesight combined with hoots and hollers when they stomp said trick.

I use these all at once. Honestly, skiing is such a different environment than skiing for a multitude of reasons, but the pole tap when directed to a fellow two planker is comparable to the hat tip.

I feel like the pole clap is a sign of "hey, props, that was sick".

But there is this other level... when people are screaming expletives with the classic slo-mo OOOOHHHHHHH. That is the skiing tip of the hat. This sport just has so much stoke behind it, it's hard to just sit there and tip your hat. Unless you're Jossi the Beekeeper.

this is one of the main reasons i dont race, there is none of the pole clapping or yewwing or what not its to serious, even if im on the chair lift and i see some random do something sick me and my mates always congratulate them with a yeww or yeahh or a pole clap, its common courtesy or if someone hits a mad cliff after a bit of peer pressure and lands it it is just out of courtesy that you congratulate them

It's gotta be the pole tap. In jr. high my best friend and I had this whole crazy pole tap ritual before competition, kinda like how Jeter adjusts his gloves a million times. We were crazy superstitious everything had to be just right. We also made up a whole pole tap ritual to the Cha Cha Slide
