Subaru help please!

Hey, I realize this is a long shot but I figured Subaru's are common enough in the ski community that it was worth a shot. Here is my story, Vehicle is a 2001 outback with 135,000 miles

Last week on my way home from Beartooth I was headed up a hill, accelerating. I was in montana, on the freeway so I was going almost 90. Engine started to click, then louder, then died. I pulled over turn over engine, makes loud clicking, no start. About an hour later get it towed, try to start again, it makes loud clicking and will start and run for a little if I give it gas. I get it home, try to start, it will start and run but makes horrendous clicking. Have buddy who know Subbies come over. He thinks it is timing, we pull timing belt, it is missing little guard to keep it on the main gear. replace timing belt, still makes noise, think it may be coming from passenger head so we strip down to that and pull the head. I water test the valves, two of them leak, "good" I think " that is the problem" We replace head (My buddy has a lot of parts) and try again, still the noise... Not good! We try to analyze source of noise, seems to be coming from all the power transfer stuff that hooks into the back of the engine. That is not good news since neither of us have any experience with that part.

Now we are stumped, I am planing on towing it to a mechanic on monday but if anyone has any ideas what this could be it would make my day.

You're probably looking at new engine. Sounds like it might be a broken rod/bearing or something.

try noisac, those guys know their shit, but it sounds like it might be fatal.

Yeah....Except that we are reasonably sure it is not an engine problem, My buddy who has rebuilt three of these is pretty sure it is not in the engine and I have to agree that the sound seems to be coming from big aluminum power transfer thing on the back of the engine.(sorry, I am a bit of an engine gaper) that is why we are stumped, if it is an engine issue we are pretty comfortable doing a swap but since we already did one of the heads and got nowhere...

and STI swap would be cool, but money is always tight and I don't really need it, haha

Same thing happened in my friends cummins except there wasn't any ticking and it turned out to be his fuel pump. I have zero experience with foreign cars but the only thing I could think of is the timing. I hope you figure it out tho and it's not too expensive.

Hmmmm, what? kind of doubt that...the noise is not coming from there and I did the alternator last summer

Highly doubt that. the alternator is mainly for the battery and once the car is started the battery doesn't do anything to keep it running. Also, the car wouldn't have started at all.(assuming the battery was dead because the alternator wasn't recharging it)

maybe you shredded a part and you hear little bits of debris knocking around the engine?

post a video of the noise. I suspect it is something not good but need video to confirm. I am willing to bet you it is connecting rod failure.... Subaru's are great at having shotty internals in their engines.

Thanks, pretty sure thats not us though, Mine is way clicky-er if that makes sense, like a loud, punctuated click, like something is hitting the spokes of something else or something, you can feel it shake the whole car

Really don't think so, thanks though. Just did one of the heads completely and made not difference and it doesn't seem like the sound is coming from the other head at all.

from you description sounds to be knock, the cereal killer or suby engines but generally any un normal noise doing from the engine while its running that is not the belts is bad. but you description is kinda hard to pin point what it is

cant really help out much bc you already said that you did the alternator last summer but when mine went out it made sort of a clicking noise b4 the engine died and fixing the alternator fixed the problem

It would probably be cheaper for you to find another motor and have your suby buddy drop it in for you.

OP, i have no idea what your problem is but just so alternator doesnt get ruled out completely- when you replaced it did you use OEM or aftermarket? alternators are usually considered one of those parts you should shell out extra to get OEM as the aftermarket are known to be faulty or go bad quickly.

Not the alternator, I have experienced that failing before and I know the drill. Looks like we might have to do the full engine swap...

good luck on the swap, post a few photos when you doing it etc. id be interested to see how it works out for you. again good luck and post some pics of said engine swap please. cheers.
