I know there are more brown pow lovers on this site, yah there is pinkbike but lets be honest, newshcoolers is wayyyy cooler. so lets posts our rides, questions about components, mechanic questions etc in this thread.

I just bought this beauty and i definitely sacrificed uphill capabiltiy in order to get a beefier dh/park bike. id been on a nomad for a while and it's a huge switch in riding styles for me. definitely getting used to the weight and having to keep speed a lot more.

specs for said beauty, 2011 rc2 dh totem, 2012 dhx rc4, highrollers front and back (gona go dhf front and highroller in the back), mtx 33 wheel set, slx brakes, diablous cranks, FSA 760mm Handlebar, Shimano SLX Shifter & Shimano Deore XT Derailleur.

GANDALFHad my first ride on the new 38 last night. pretty damn impressed. still not sure how i feel about the color... i'll be riding it for a bit so im excited to get this on some rougher stuff soon.


Oooof I bet that thing goes well now. Lovely rig.

Shame about the colour clash though, I would've just played it safe with the black lowers.

I only got a quick ride at galbraith after i clocked out. im taking it out today to ride some more rough stuff outside of galbraith. still practicing low risk riding here amidst this pandemic. so i wont really be able to push the fork too hard

Yeah I have ridden both. Love my lyrik with a coil in it. As far as stiffness, yeah its obviously stiffer. Only one ride on it so far and im not really pushing it too hard amidst this pandemic. but yeah. stiffer.

Buy used or buy last seasons demo bike from a shop. Saves a lotta guap and a good shop should honor manufacturers warranty as if the bike was brand new. What's your budget?

Hardtail or full suspension? 1500-2k is probably where you're gonna be for a decent used whip... but if you really want value, find a kitted out hardtail (larger front fork, slack head angle, and maybe even plus sized tires) . Less forgiving, especially if we're talking jump lines, but surprisingly fun and crazy usable. Plus, you can throw the shit outta them and still ride

Yeah man that's a great budget to start. You can find a decent spec'd demo trek fuel or giant trance for around 2k if you want a really solid trail bike. The more money you spend buys things like carbon frames, wheelsets, sturdier forks, etc. The good thing is, if you buy a lower spec model you can make upgrades down the road as you see fit.

yes and no. quiz the owner on maintenance. Fox shocks (like other shocks) are usually great, as long as there was proper upkeep. Make sure you ride it and get a feel of the shock. Besides that, 26 inchs are great! They are starting to slowly disappear but are still totally capable on the trail. 26in's are gonna be super playful and easy to throw around while being less efficient on the climb and over longer distances while the opposite holds tru for a larger size (27.5/29). :)

I'd be pretty bummed too, but I wouldn't be surprised given that it is the most popular spot and pretty much the first to dry out.
There is plenty of fun stuff to ride in town if you lower your expectations. I've been lapping the Straightline that is hidden off the top of Burke park, wandering around on townie trails, found a couple of short sleeper lines is the neighborhood by the water tower, riding a lot of street, dirt jumps, doing wheelies and skills stuff. We just gotta be patient.

Full sus all day erry day. Hardtails are more efficient on the climb, and that's about it. Leave the hardtails for the lycra crowd and the diehards.

You gotta hit the line from the top of Peets/Burke. Short steep loose unmarked trail parallel to the telephone wires, it's a blast and my new favorite quick townie trail. Also the Story Hills trail is pretty fun but I dunno how dry that is yet.

I think that getting a FS bike as your first mountain bike is a bad idea. You miss out on a lot of important skill building opportunity that riding a hardtail provides, I'm not saying it's impossible to build skills with a FS bike, but they definitely allow you to ride harder terrain a lot more lazily. I see so many people who jump straight to a big squishy enduro bike right away and can't really progress much because they just relay on the bike to get them through difficult trails.
That being said if you are dead set on a FS bike there are plenty of modern short travel trail bikes that would be a great choice. Check out Pink Bike's recent Field Trip video series on youtube.

I'd buy a full suspension bike if you plan on going down to Moab at all. The Whole Enchilada (and tons of others down there) is so goddamn fun.

I was gonna make a ski analogy but it doesn't really translate directly. Like it would seem that a big enduro bike is like a big damp charging pow ski, but big squishy bikes don't punish you at low speeds like a big charger ski does. I don't really think long straight skis are similar to hardtails at all.

I strongly feel that building skills and challenging myself on a hardtail was fun and I'm a more confident rider on my FS bike now because of it. And it's definitely still easy to destroy wheels on a full suspension bike if you make bad line choices because you are reliant on the suspension to make those line choices for you. It's also really dependent on someone's biking background, style, and trails they ride as well. I really liked the stiff direct power transfer and excellent climbing on my hardtail for 80% of the trials I rode which were smoother flowy-er stuff, and then the 20% of chunky stuff was still fun because it was a little more difficult and made me think more about line choice.

I go back and forth on the "FS vs. hardtail" thing. I feel like there's no real "right" answer. Most of my life revolves around youth development on bikes (6-12-year-olds). At that age, yeah, of course, you should start on a HT, just because the biggest thing is weight for those kiddos. Hell, I'm a big fan of the full rigid plus bikes for the really little kids. Light with tons of traction. But as an adult, especially an adult who skis, the line is a lot more blurry. For the hardtail apologists out there, what skills did starting on a HT give you that you wouldn't have gotten on an FS? Genuinely curious.

I also see a lot of people ride a HT for a few years because they were told that's the only way to learn, and then they just end up being really timid, almost like they have some PTSD from getting bucked on the HT. I also see people who start (as adults) on a HT, and that fact classifies them, in their own minds, as "XC riders" who only care about the up and can't descend for shit. A HT gives new riders an excuse to shy away from features and sections of trail they find intimidating. Especially because that new rider is often riding with someone experienced on a FS bike. And yeah, I have a small sample size, but I have a few friends who have come from skiing to biking in their 20's, jumped on an entry-level FS, and just translated the aggressive body position they learned from skiing seamlessly to biking.

If you gave me a skier who wants to become a mountain biker and told me to help them out, I'd throw them on 120-130mm trail bike, with a dropper, and start riding green and blue trails at a bike park. Work on having good body position, covering your brakes, looking ahead, apexing turns well. It doesn't matter what bike you're on for that, and if you buy an entry level hardtail, realize you love riding, and get hooked, then you're gonna upgrade to a FS anyway, and then you're left with a used hardtail with no resale value.


You can tell by the length of that post that we have no riding dry yet, so I'm thinking and talking about bikes way too much. Sorry.

Never said old straight skis, modern skis can be long and straight too. Fact of the matter though, to edge on long straight chargers you must be on top of your game, to not get bucked on a hardtail it's the same thing. The 'line choice' excuse is wack. Why go around when you can blast through?

I think this is an interesting point. I never felt like I had to excessively shy away from certain trails or features when I was on my hardtail, which was an entry level XC bike with a 100mm fork. I definitely loved the uphill as I came from an XC running and fixed gear background, but I was still always trying to descend to the best of my abilities. I certainly couldn't hit things with reckless abandon, but I was still riding chunky steep downhills and at least trying to keep up with my friends on their FS bikes.
I always saw the main benefit to a hardtail being the additional challenge of knowing and pushing the limits of the bike and your own physical limits. Yes it is more challenging to ride a hardtail on difficult downhills, but I really enjoyed how that challenge pushed me to be a better rider. Getting bucked on a hardtail could make someone timid, but I see plenty of timid FS riders who always look like the bike is taking them for a ride.
I think mostly what it comes down to is cost. You really just cant beat the better value and lower maintenence cost of a hardtail for a first mtb

Should I get a dirt jump bike or do I just need to beef up so I can jump my big, slack, stable MTB better? The only dirt jumps near me are pretty tight and compact and the one time I rode my friend's DJ bike it was amazing how it felt like it actually wanted to leave the ground.

I’ve been very intrigued by that shock setup. I’m interested in a coil but a remote reservoir would limit water bottle clearance on my bike so that damper would be the dream. Also I’m curious to how much of a difference progressive springs make

The yeti guys recommended the progressive spring for going coil on their bikes. Really it’s only at the end of the stroke that it differs from linear, but it will allow for a quicker ramp up at the end of the stroke more similar to an air shock so I’m excited to try it!



Cool thing about the inline coil over one with a piggyback, is that this setup is only 180g heavier than the dpx2 it came with, which is a figure I can live with

I'm itching for a suspension upgrade on my bike, but I'm more of a set and forget kind of guy so I'm a little hesitant to get anything from Cane Creek with the higher degree of adjustability.
I think really what I need on my shock is a good service and maybe get the megneg upgrade. As far as forks go I'm trying to decide between Bomber Z1, Pike Ultimate, and MRP Ribbon Air.

I bottom out my shit A LOT doing dumbass stuff like dropping to flat on concrete and hucking down stairs. What actual damage does bottoming out do to suspension?

Bozeman's DJ spot was challenging on a big bike when I last rode it like four years ago. Hard to keep speed there without at least some kind of hardtail. That said, I'm a big fan of riding dirt jumps on whatever bike you usually ride. That way you can translate directly to say bike park jumps or trail jumps. I hate having the mental block of "I can do this on a specialized machine that's designed for it, but I'm not sure I can make it happen on an all-round bike." Here in Driggs we're really consciously building jump lines for "trail" or enduro bikes because that's what we all have and it's nice to just have something that people can flow on whatever.

On your fork question: big fan of that Z1. I've moved the Fox equivalent between a few bikes now, and as long as I keep up on maintenance I have no regrets. Less adjustability than more expensive platforms, but man, it just works. And the price is right.

You only need the $25 upgrade which is those two red pieces, not the full air spring.

On your fork question: big fan of that Z1. I've moved the Fox equivalent between a few bikes now, and as long as I keep up on maintenance I have no regrets. Less adjustability than more expensive platforms, but man, it just works. And the price is right.

I also hate the weird top out thing on RS forks that the new line they just released addressed. New bike comes with a Lyric, so I'll probably do that upgrade immediately since it's just $50


Yeah I wish Bozeman had some jump trails but apparently the forest service and BLM hate fun and are pretty hard to work with. SWMBA posted a note at the jumps about some major renovation supposed to be starting today actually but I don’t know how the pandemic is gonna change that.

Eh, this article describes it better than I can. RS forks tend to ride lower in their travel, even when unweighted. That often makes for more small-bump sensitivity but also makes for this weird, really hard to describe sensation when it feels (to me at least) like there is free play in the top of the fork when I lift my front wheel, almost like undamped, unsprung travel. Apparently, most people don't notice it. I've felt it on every nice RS fork I've ridden and it's just that sort of small, weird niggle that pushes me to Fox every time I get the choice. Glad this upgrade fixes that, and has some other positive benefits.
