Anyone have experience with ankle injuries?

I'll try and keep this short. I was running into the ocean, stepped in a hole, and rolled my ankle pretty badly. It instantly swelled to the size of a baseball and a week later it still is a little painful to walk on. Well this wasn't my only ankle injury. Last night during my dek hockey game a kid tried slap shotting the ball but ended up connecting directly with the inside of my right ankle with his stick. Once again, instant swelling to the size of a baseball and bruising. What is the best way to approach these injuries? Is there a chance that I might have fractured something and don't know it? Or just suck it up and hope it gets better.

Just rest it, not much else you can do. Depending on the severity of the sprain it might take a while to heal completely, like a couple weeks. I've never broken anything so I don't know for sure but I'm almost certain that if it was fractured, you would know it.

I know a guy who fractured a bone in his foot and didn't realise that it was broken for a good couple months, he said the pain wasnt that bad. BTW he was a puss so I guess it could be broken. Better be safe than sorry!
Did it swell up and hurt in the same place on the same foot? If so I would get it checked out, but thats just me.

Rest and ice. Maybe a brace. I've had multiple, serious ankle injuries and thats pretty much the remedy for anything short of a cast.

This is what I'm worried about. I might just go get xrays just to be safe. I didn't specify but the first injury was to my right ankle and the second was to my left ankle so I'm struggling to walk at the moment haha

did your foot turn inside or outside when you sprained it? This determines a lot.

okay then it's probably just a sprain. Keep weight off for about a week, ice for 30 Minutes twice a day. Take 3 advil twice a day. Keep pressure off until you think you're ready.

Twisted my ankle outwards (high ankle sprain) playing paint ball last summer. Was probably the most annoying and long lasting injury I have ever had. It took a good 8 months for it to heal. Went to the doctor, got mri, all the mri showed was some fluid in my ankle. Did some pt, which didn't help, and just cost me $. Rest and time is what it took for me. Very very very annoying, ruined my whole summer last year.

which way did you roll it? if you inverted it (outside of your foot turns down and outward), you coulda just sprained your atfl (most common ligament to sprain in inversion). in that case, rest, ice, compress with ace wrap (if your toes turn blue, any numbness, tingling, its too tight), and elevate (RICE protocol). NSAIDs like ibuprofen help with swelling and pain.

you can quickly check for fractures by pressing on four areas of the foot. the outer edge of your foot, like from little toe down to the heel, the medial and lateral malleolus (inside and outside of that ball joint thing), and up by your knee on the outside edge, just below the kneecap. those spots will be the common areas of fracture (aka pain) if you did mess something up. obviously this doesn't replace an xray.

this is only if you invert your foot though, but usually that's how people get hurt doing what you described.

if it's still messed up, get an xray or see an orthopedist.

It's been 12 days and it's bearable to walk on so I'm pretty sure it's just a sprain. My parents are the ones thinking I need to get xrays.

On my left ankle on the inside right above that ball joint thing is where I got hit with the hockey stick. It's pretty bruised and hurts to touch, but I'm just hoping its a bad bruise

if it wasn't painful before you got hit with the stick, I wouldn't think rolling your ankle caused any type of fracture in that spot.

but now that you got drilled by a hockey stick, yeah, you'll probably be sore for a while. whoever said to ice and take advil around the clock was right on for supportive management, do that lol
