How do i get on a down rail

hey guys i been skiing park for about 2 years now and i cant hit any rails where you have to jump high sideways to get on. ive tried some but i only get the front of my skis on and then i fall right off. any tips to hit rails where you need to jump up to get on? thanks. great answers will get karma.

It's all a matter of hopping up on center of the rail, you sound like you're coming up short. Commit harder, try to hop OVER the rail a few times, after that, getting on center shouldn't be an issue.

down rails are hard to master at first. there are 2 methods:


Popping on- exactly sounds, come from either side of the rails at a bit of an angle, pop hard and center your feet on the rail. Don'tcome at too much of an angle though, as this will cause you to fall right off the other side.

Stepping on- this usually used for higher down rails, but can be used for both. You need to step off your outside foot and put your inside ski on the rail sideways. Then take your outside ski, place it on the rail and fully commit to it. This will take time and practice to get used to.


in my opinion, popping on is easier and should be done first. Both ways are going to take time to get used to though, hope i helped!

My main problem with down rails is my feet slide out from under me and I land on my ass. When popping off the lip do I need to lean further forward or what?

The way I do it is in mid-air I make that slight adjustment. Try to do it on a flat down rail hit it with speed pop before the Dow then don't even think about it just land on the rail and when you do that successfully you should be able to master all down rails

Just keep practicing, once you do get your feet over and on the rail nicely it will feel awesome

Your slipping out- lean towards your front foot and look at the end of the rail

the only reason i wouldn't suggest stepping on is because i started to do that and its extremely hard to stop doing it once you get used to it

what always works for me is having more speed (because rails are always easier if you're going faster) and aim further down the rail. instead of just trying to get right up on the beginning of the rail, aim a little further down and its real easy to lock onto

Dont try to get on to the first part of the rail. Aim for the middle of the rail because its not as high relative to the jump so you dont need to worry about pop as much

never never never never step onto a rail. That is pretty much the reason you will slip out. Come into the rail with more speed than you think you'll need, pop off of both skis evenly and spin 90 deg on.

come up to it, make sure to spot where your skis are going to hit the rail. Get over the center of the rail, and put most of the pressure on your front foot. Look for the very end of the rail, and balance on it as far as you can. Just make sure to look at where you're going to go, and now where you are and you'll be fine.

Down rails: Shoulder-width stance, lean more into your front ski then back ski. If you do both of those you should be able to hit virtually any down rail
