I’m a full time student taking 15 credits. I’m enrolled in an economics class and have not yet purchased the 300 dollar book. The teacher speaks a different language and writes gibberish on the board. I am the only white person in the class. If I drop out it will severely hurt me financially because i’ll go below 12 credits. Should I just go and fail the class and then retake it? I have talked to my advisor and he said he doesn’t know and I have called, emailed and gone to the academic advisement center but they keep telling me to talk to my advisor.

I don’t want to be a bum.

Why would you go through half a semester without getting the book?

Ask someone in your class if they wanna share the book. If not, get the book used or rent it. Read the damn book. Take notes in class and pay attention.

Don't just give up. Sometimes you actually have to put in a little bit of an effort.

Absolutely worth every penny for the text book. DONT ruin your GPA over being a little cheap. The text book is probably where your teacher gets the test materials from. If you cant understand your teacher textbook is the next best option. And dont drop it. You will regret it when you have to take a summer course or load up with 18 for one semester. Suck it up and study extra hard.

I found the lower level economics courses were harder than the upper levels. The upper had harder math, but were ten times more interesting and people who were there wanted to be there. Suck it up buddy semester is almost over anyways another 2 months.

No, but I can’t understand her nor her writing. For example she spelt Time as Tim i and she spelt opportunity cost as opportune. co. with a period after the e. and co. I will take a language course in Portuguese and then I will take her class over again and only her class. Then I will complain.

No, I have a Portuguese teacher who speaks heavy Portuguese and writes a mixture of Portuguese and english with lots of periods in between words. For example,

Khan academy helped me get a good grade in my organic chemistry class. They have a section on economics too. You should still get the text book but this stuff has been really helpful for me in the past.

You could skim the wikipedia page on economics and easily pass econ 100. Also, your school's library probably has a text on reserve you can rent out for free.
If you you really can't understand your prof at all, why wait until half way through the semester to do anything about it? You're in college now op, its time to learn how to use your resources.

Come on dude, you have so many different options. Use Khan Academy, rent the book, get a personal tutor, see if she has an extra copy, or even if the library has one! Dont sit and bitch about a book being too expensive if you havent explored all the options.

I'm in macro-economics currently and my teacher has a heavy accent as well. It's a part of life. Try using ratemyprofessor.com next time. I picked this teacher despite the stupid comments about his accent because he gives out a review sheet that mimics the test exactly. Whatever either way, suck it up. I saw someone already suggest this but I was also going to say check out the library. My school's library either carries it or will get it for people. Good luck grasshopper

I found the book for $75. NEVER use the campus book store unless its a book unique to the university. Also international editions are the bees knees, 20$ for a 200$ book.

does she seriously speak a different language? do you go to an english-speaking university? if it did not specifically say on your course syllabus you will at least get to drop the course with no academic penalty. I would not accept anything but that and a full refund.

if it says on the course syllabus that it was going to be taught in a different language, then it's a different story, and I would have no sympathy for you.

yup.

also stealing textbooks & buying international editions will help bring the price down. The publishers don't print prices on the books because they will sell them for as high as the market can handle. If more people in a class steal/get get international editions, then the university bookstores end up sending back a lot more books than the publishers expected. If this happens at enough schools, then they will sell the exact same books for cheaper the next year.

The book comes with ConnectPlus, and in my classes, hw is assigned online. A new textbook comes with an individual ConnectPlus code. Then again if its not hw she is assigning and ConnectPlus is optional use, then rent. Also, you said you cant drop because it would put you under 12 (parttime) but isnt an intro to econ 3 credits? Meaning youll be at exactly 12, still full time?

If you fail, retake it the nxt semester , pass, and that grade will replace the failing grade. Thats what they do in my college not sure if its the same with you.
