Slopestyle snowboard finals weren't that exciting.

Maybe I'm just too tired but didn't seem that exciting. Maybe with the small amount of people in the finals and the 2 run format idk.

Might just be the energy there. Hopefully the skiing is better.


Again it might just be me. Anyone else watch it?

I've honestly never been very excited for any slopestyle competition. I find them slow to watch and there are way too many dub 10s and 12s with high mute. Big air comps on the other hand...

well it was also the shitty as fuck announcer we have on NBC. He hasn't named a single trick, just kind of ruins it for me.

I thought it was exciting but the judging really brought it down for me. I stopped getting stoked on runs because I had no fucking idea how it would score. It's nice when you see a run and go "holy fuck!!! that's definitely taking first" and it doesn't score a fucking 80 or some shit.

So stoked for Sage though, too bad about the hand drag cause he'll get hated on for that even though it was the judges call to give him such a high score.

Do the judges even care about rails? It seems like if they just finished the rail and made it look a little stylish they were fine. But the judging was odd. Parrot had the run of his life and it amazed me that he didn't podium. Then again, i don't know snowboarding near as well but i hope skiing gets judged more consistently and they actually pay attention to rails

In my defence i don't really watch too much snowboard slopestyle so there's a good chance i may be wrong. It just seemed boring and besides that rodeo off that box it all looked uncreatively similar

totally agree, give me big air over slopestyle any day - not a fan of pipe either, both are too technical and lack the personality of big boots

I agree with almost everything above. The scoring was sketchy for sure. And it did seem like the riders were taking the rail section so lightly.

I was so stoked on the finals, maybe it was because i was stoned but i find it interesting or it was because it was the first slope finals being broadcasted on regular TV so pretty happy either way

They explained the judging during qualifiers, apparently each section (feature group) of the run is weighted the same amount. As to how much the judges followed this I'm not sure, but yeah

Like k-dot said earlier I don't know a ton about snowboarding or how it's judged, but I feel like I know enough to say the Parrot got completely robbed. Not only that, but a 93 for Sage on a not-that-clean run, and an 88 for Mcmorris with a STOMPED run and a triple..?

maybe it's a positive step that judges are starting to favor style now but the judging definitely seemed off.

It's a shame you missed the old ones then. The dub train has only been happening for the last 4 years. I love slopestyle though.

I honestly thought the judges did a pretty good job. I was within about 2 points on most of them and put them in the same order on those final runs.

my favorite part was simply being able to watch the event from the comfort of my own couch on national tv. it was not that exciting in my opinion, but not knowing a whole lot about snowboarding myself , im not that surprised. i think that the skiing will be waaay more fun to watch, and i really hope some of the skiiers strut their stuff on those rail and wall-ride options etc. i still want to see someone absolutely slay the rail section of that course.... on another note anyone notice how high impact those landings were off those big stepdowns ? crazy shiit, hope all the skiiers knees hold up ..

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.

Slopestyle sucks? Slope is the only watchable comp in my eyes. x games big air was incredible this year, but really, going back and watching year's gone by, they're so fucking monotonous. Not that much a fan of pipe either, though there are skiers I enjoy more than others.

As for OP, yeah, I'm kind of with you.....something just was missing.

No shit, they were taking it fucking deep, each hit in mcmorris' run was 4th line, if they were 80' to the knuckle then they were easily 100'+ each hit. Hopefully skiers go that big

Honestly kind of scared for skiers since the womens snowboard qualifiers. Everyone was bitching about how big the jumps were. Other than the bottom booter they aren't that ridiculous. Even the women were sending the first 2 deep. Knew the men would really be going down the landing and the mens skiers? They're probably going to take some of those to the bottom like the xgames from a few years ago when the landing wasn't a couple hundred feet long.

For me, snowboarding on jumps is boring to watch. There isn't enough visual difference between grabs to keep things exciting, and you rarely see a rotation that isn't a double 10/12 or a triple. Skiing may not be much better on the rotation side, but grabs like nose, safety, mute, and tail make rotations look much more varied.

Also to the thread. Actually thought the womens was more exciting. So maybe it really came down to how I was feeling on the different days.


Anybody see Sarka Pankochova get smoked on the landing of the second jump? Those are the worst kind of falls imo. She smashed her head hard. Also Sina Candrian's 1080. Can't wait to see where that takes them. Womens slopestyle is actually getting stylish. Now they just need to start getting more 9's and 10s in their runs.

Sage's run was the equivalent to Vivienne cash's dub bio 1620s at big air. I thought that finals were sick and that Sage saved competition snowboarding.

They threw down, it was more the format announcing etc. It just didn't seem to have energy. There were like 4 people riding in it. It started and then it was over. But I agree that his grabs were nasty.

I don't remember at this point. But if so that is pretty lame. I was stoked to see mcmorris throwing down after getting rocked at xgames. Ski slope starts on thursday right? Stoked to see what they can throw down on that course.

Ski slope is going to be nuts. I'm not sure about sage's final run actually since the video I watched turned out to actually be his first run. He may have smoothed out his landings.

This kind of shit is why I wear a helmet. I smashed a protect into pretty much 2 pieces at a big air. Was still connected on the front half. Head injuries are bad for you. That's why my brains already so fucked. Figure I might as well salvage whats left.


And yeah on jumps like that the women will be able to get them nice and clean soon. Looked way better than some of the big spins in pipe.

You're right, in general they're big but not ridiculously huge. I believe Blackcomb had a 90 footer in their park one year.

However, they are fucking huge for a slope competition. If I remember correctly, xgames last year was 65, 70, 75. The big air jump in 2013 was 85 feet.

The jumps at the Sochi course measure in at 85, 90, 95 feet. They are fucking colossal on a whole new plane as far as slopestyle goes.

They must have really mellowed the takeoffs then if that's the actual size. Even the women were going half way down some of them more. Nobody even came close to the knuckle.

But that could explain the trajectory. Considering those jumps haven't sent anybody even close to the knuckle even if they've come out sketch as hell on the one before it.
