I know this is a little morbid but it got me thinking about the whole death penalty argument and who deserves what. This dude raped and stabbed to death a pregnant newly wed back in 1989. In my opinion, he got off easy with that horrible death that he had. I think people like that should be killed like this anyway. Society needs a deterrent from this sort of behavior and setting examples is one of the only profound ways to stop fucked up behavior. Just my two cents.
No but it takes a financial strain off of society by getting rid of someone who has no chance for rehabilitation or a normal life. A lot of people aren't afraid of prison - some even embrace it. Death though... Who isn't afraid of death?
yeah if someone close to me was the object of some maniac's assault I'd probably be blinded by rage and want him dead. But I still think its not the State's role to take life. No one has the RIGHT to take someone else's life.
ummmm no it doesn't. the court costs associated with the death penalty, the amount of money it takes to keep prisoners in maximum security until they are actually killed, money spent in appellate courts, etc. outweigh the costs of keeping someone in prison for life without parole.
"The authors calculated that, if the Governor commuted the sentences of those remaining on death row to life without parole, it would result in an immediate savings of $170 million per year, with a savings of $5 billion over the next 20 years."
exactly this. the best thing about the firing line is that there's no single "executioner" per se, since it's usually 4 or 5 people shooting with 4 live bullets and a blank, and none know which holds which.
Whether I agree with it or not, how the hell do they fuck this up?
Why don't they just use anesthesia and then the lethal dose? And if they do already, he probably didn't actually feel the trauma of suffocation.
On the other hand, I'm sure the newlywed he raped and stabbed had some kind of discomfort during her death as well, so either way it's tough for me to feel too much sympathy for this guy.
It's so pathetic to see others show any sympathy towards people like this killer. They shouldn't have given him shit for drugs, they should've simply cut his achilles tendons and let him flounder on the floor like the fucker he is while getting the shit beat out of him until the veins in his eyes burst.
Being drawn and quartered would be another good death penalty. I would be scared shitless to murder someone if I knew that I was going to be tied to 4 horses and ripped into 4 pieces.
But seriously they should just kill the person how they killed someone years ago. And rapists or people with child porn should be just thrown into a wood chipper turned on the lowest setting. That garbage is absolutely disgusting.
I honestly dont see how people think that murderers and rapists should live a posh life in prison when they ruined the lives of others forever.
but back then there was still murder, treason and all that stuff that was punishable via drawn and quartering.
literally, every single cruel and fucked up execution method WE KNOW ABOUT wasnt deterring enough to prevent its eventual application.
all you internet tough guys should calm the fuck down and think about your "wood chipper" comments. then think about how you look at countries where people in fact do get executed in the worst possible ways. usually, we call them "uncivilized" or "middle east shitholes". well, i wouldnt, but most of you would.
The problem isn't necessarily 'feeling bad for the killer' it's the fact that there are very few cases where there is a 100% guarantee that the person charged with murder was in fact the murderer. There have been cases where innocence has been proven 20 years after the initial sentencing. Albeit, not many cases and usually the reversal has been due to the implementation of DNA processing seen in modern times, but the risk of killing an innocent person is still there.
I can go on about this for days, but the modern day prison system focuses on retribution rather than rehabilitation. The 'punishments' are not meant as a deterrent but rather a means of 'paying for their crimes'.
Which is the way it should be. I don't give a fuck about rehabilitating a rapist/murderer. Sure, the system is kind of fucked up for people who commit lesser crimes that should be rehabbed, but I couldn't give two shits about the suffering of a murderer. They should suffer, and I don't feel bad for them when they do. If you can't handle the potential punishment, don't kill someone. Simple as that.
On the other hand, I agree with you on the point about killing someone innocent. It's tricky, because sometimes someone innocent could get wrapped up in a crime and executed. But is that really that much worse than getting rid of the death penalty and just destroying the innocent person's life by letting them rot in prison for life?
Maybe this is just me, but I would choose death over life in prison. I can't have my freedom taken away like that, my spirit would be broken. I'd choose execution over never being able to ski or do anything fun ever again in a heartbeat.
And for the people saying punishment doesn't deter crime, bullshit. If it was legal, I'd have committed tons of crimes in my life already. Wanna know why I don't? Oh yeah, it's because I don't want to go to prison or get executed. Sure, it doesn't deter ALL crime, but it deters normal people like you and I from committing crimes.
Honestly I'm all for the death penalty. Kill those mother fuckers that do these unspeakable things to innocent people. I only thing I don't agree with is how fucking long it takes to finally execute them. 25 years!! fucking a put an express line on that bitch and get it done ASAP!!! All those wasted tax dollars on keeping that scum alive for that long. To be honest people now a days are fucking pussies. Realize what these monsters do and deal with it accordingly. You don't need the gallows, or the chair, although they would be nice. Aslong as these fuckers die, I'm happy. /end
Dennis McGuire's attorney Allen Bohnert called the convicted killer's death "a failed, agonizing experiment" and added: "The people of the state of Ohio should be appalled at what was done here today in their names."
More like his family should be appalled at what was done in their names...
you also see people calling for the heads of rapist, pedophiles and other crimes, "inferior" to murder in THIS THREAD.
which is not just ethically unsound, its also LOGICALLY wrong. yes, like the logic in its scientific meaning, not the stupid ass "common sense" local bar drunkards type of meaning.
i dont see why the fuck they shouldnt have the right. nobody has the right to kill a mother and her unborn child but that rule went by the wayside when this fuckhead of a douche went ahead and killed a mother and her unborn child
a state has to hold principles and live them. a state expecting its inhabitants to act rightfully and respect each others physical and psychological intactness, HAS to do the same. otherwise, the state is not credible and merely an authority of power/money/resources and not an ethical authority.
thats why prisons shouldnt be shitholes, thats why you dont torture and kill.
i am glad that a lot of people in here dont hold any power and can reserve their internet tough guy mentality for playing WoW or punching their children. not directed at you, just a general feeling in this thread.
Idk, just be the better person?
The whole "he started it, so I have to give back" is sandbox mentality in my eyes. If everyone started giving back at each other everytime they felt mistreated or abused our whole society would collapse. I dont think its morally right to kill another person, and therefore I dont think our government shouldnt have the power to take life either.
thats the problem. people should want to avoid crimes from within.
i, and i would say most people, dont commit crimes because its just wrong to do so. there are countless of potential crimes in your life where there is literally a 0% chance of getting caught. we all have been in those situations, several times a week probably.
obviously not applicable for all people, but to act like only punishment hinders me (or most other people as you imply) from committing dozens of crimes day in and day out is, honestly, pretty offending.
I think the guy got what he deserved, but for preventative measures of future crimes I agree with this. Punishment is the most ineffective way to change humans' behavior, and the death penalty, prison system, etc. are nothing more than punishments. In theory, making penalties harsher will have no effect on crime rates. There are some cases in which harsher penalties do work in preventing crime, but there are better ways of changing humans' behavior. If we were to make a program or something that uses positive or negative reinforcement rather than punishment as a means of changing behavior, we could possibly attain the lower crime rates that we desire. Whether a program like this is feasible or not, I don't really know because I don't have enough knowledge of how everything in the system runs. Just some food for thought.
so rapist and pedophiles should be executed? is that what you say?
well then let me show you why it is LOGICALLY wrong to punish anything but murder with the death penalty. its not even a thing of reference frame, morals or whatever. if you prefer less people being killed, you have to prefer reserving death penalty (if at all) for murderers.
so lets assume there is a world where EVERY CRIME gets punished with the death penalty. minor robbery, battery or whatever. so if someone were to commit a minor crime, he already faces the death penalty. that means he has no incentive NOT to kill any witness, police officer, judge, state attorney or whatever just to avoid/delay execution.
so, while it sounds belittling, rape and pedophilia ARE in fact "minor" crimes. not punishing it with the death penalty PROTECTS THE VICTIMS AND WITNESSES. why would a rapist leave his victim alive if rape is punished with the death penalty?
and on that string of logic, the shorter the jail sentences are for rapists/pedophiles, the better for the victims, since the probability of getting killed goes down. some people would consider 20 years in prison equal to a death penalty, thats why jail sentences for rapists/pedophiles are, at first glance, ridiculously low. but its based on LOGIC, as bad as it sounds, and on protecting victims.
there is a great guy on youtube, i think he is named qualiasoup and he really has some legit presentation-type of videos on a lot of these moral kind of issues. i highly recommend them. this is a very difficult conversation, and un-educated internet tough guy shit wont bring anyone anywhere
