Are K2's Overrated?

So for my first pair of skis I got some used K2 Press' and to be honest they're a great ski in my opinion. But I hear a lot of people talk shit about those skis and that company in general saying they're over priced and over rated etc. Let me hear your opinions NS.

Heard a lot of mixed. Most people say the skis are brilliant, but the build quality always seems to get quite varied reviews. Some people (^) say they're pretty much indestructible. However recently K2 (and line, who K2 own) have started making their skis in China. Since then I've heard more horror stories about K2s, like them breaking first run etc.

They have gotten less and less durable over the years. The diecut bases (seems between colors) are not sick. Spend the extra money and support a small company that is hand made in the US

the press is their budget ski, so obviously not the best overall performance wise. k2 has a great customer service from what i have heard, and they are pretty much the biggest ski company, so they dont release a ski if its not on point. imo its hard to go wrong with a k2

Build quality getting varied reviews? You really can't have a much more solid construction than a torsion box for what we do to our skis. K2 has been producing their skis in china for probably close to 10 years now, and if anything, quality is better than when they were made in the US. I've had several pairs of k2s that have held up to plenty of urban abuse and they're still useable. I'm all for supporting small independent companies, but don't knock k2. Not many 'large' companies do as much for our sport as they're doing right now.

I'm just going by what I hear bro, I've heard way more "I'll never buy *insert ski brand here* again, my pair broke first time" for K2 than any other brand.

Let's not get in an argument about this anyway, and I never said anything about what K2 do for our sport. They're one of the earliest 'freeskiing' companies and I respect that.

My Domains are on their second season. Couple edge cracks and a small core shot but still going strong!

Yeah, I bought some domains 1 year ago with the assumption that they were bomb proof because of reviews and they barely lasted me a season the edges suck, and the skis delamed tip and tail even with rivets, just like salomon, k2s skis have slowly lost they're durability. Don't get me wrong they're great skis but they just don't last, now I stick to the more underground handmade companies they're skis seem to hold up better then the larger companies and are just as fun if not better to ride!

Ive got a pair of Kung Fujas and I love them. They got a lot softer since I started riding them, but they kill it anywhere on the mountain comfortably and the durability has been fantastic

Just bought my first pair of K2 sight sight skis, not before doing plenty of research and I wasn't surprised to find tons of good things said about K2 as a company and their products! And I've heard a bazillion times that K2 skis are BOMBPROOF!

My last purchase was a pair of ninthward true twins, which I've had for 2 seasons now with not a single edge crack and barely any edge ware, and Ive only had one small tip delam recently, which I fixed with some rounded bolts, but other then that they've done good for me I usually go through skis within a season or a season and a half if I'm lucky!

i rode my presses as my first park ski for a whole season with no edge cracks and only minor topsheet chipping and got them for $170 on clearance at sports authority. Definitely far from cheaply made

My first generation Fujatives (red ones) are still going strong with their second owner. Granted neither of us are hard on skis, but they've held up great!

k2 has been making skis forever... they definitely have their shit figured out. i used to be skeptical on k2s since theyre pretty heavy and "mainstream" but i decided this year to get some recoils. favorite ski ive owned... and ive owned alot of skis over the years

snapped a pair of hardsides...powder touring skis. had less that 8 days on them. only skiied in powder. K2 did nothing for me...complete horseshit. never buying again

K2s are great for what they are. I would never EVER pay full retail for a non-indie pair of skis though.

I had last years 50th annigversary recoils last year, beat the shit out of them. I could probably still be skiing them too, but I got a new pair of k2 Shreditors. 120 under foot, east coast is retarded but still fun and my comps have not been to bad. I would say k2 is sick as fuck cause I broke 1 pair of lines before I hopped on k2. The two lines were the Step ups 2012 with the skulls those are still cool I guess but some oldschool mother ships from like 2002 shorted after the first year.

My domains were pretty nice but I have jmos now that I like a lot more. I'd say the press is pretty shit but they make decent quality skis, little heavy though

Had 2 seasons on sights and they are bombproof, though a little on the side heavy imo. Though they do come hand in hand

I think they are critiqued because the materials and manufacturing process isn't as good as a lot of the new companies that focus on handmade and smaller batches of skis. I love my k2's and have owned 3 pairs. Every one has been a great ski. That being said, I have noticed them all changing over time as a ski. The core softens up a lot. Not necessarily a bad thing but makes me think they are weaker cores than some of my other skis.

I'm a big dude as far as skiers go, 6' 2" and somewhere from 180-190 lbs. I've been skiing on K2's since long before i rode for them, they were the only skis i wanted to be skiing on.

The ONLY K2 I have ever broken in my life was an '05 Public Enemy that i purposely mounted forward of center to have slightly longer tails....
I usually ride the same pair of skis all season (and all summer). To me, k2's are incredibly durable. I've used a pair of the exact same Hellbents for 3 seasons in a row, not necessarily "taking it easy" on them either. Most of their skis I prefer are pretty soft, and I think it's logical that softer = a lot more difficult to break. Love those skis, I'll ride em till I'm old and grey

And ya, The Press is the price point ski, probably the least "hard charging" of all the k2's you could be basing this off. However, pretty sure The Press is the same as the original red Fujative, which was my favorite ski ever! Cannot remember where mine ever went but I know I didn't break em. wish i still had those.

I have been riding k2's for the past 6 years, never had a problem. My disorderlys and domains were retired after two years on each, with still soo much life in them.( only thing that was bad about them was the the disorderlys top sheets chipped, and this doesn't happen with the new ones), curently on my second year on my iron maidens, no edge cracks top sheets are still premo, and did i mention i use these for urban as well as every day in the park? I also have apir of og hell bents that were ridden 3 years before my hard as fuck by a big fucker, and now im riding them and well there still going strong as fuck.


TLDR; k2 is the shit, but them.

You're a fucking idiot. I was being a smartass to the guy's sarcastic remark which implied you were doing more than skiing just powder. What I was trying to say was you should have 100% been warrantied because there is no way they should have snapped after just 8 days and it was pretty obvious that no one uses those in the park, let alone on rails.

Ya I have skied powder before, and yes I have dropped a cliff. I do have an idea, bud.

My only complaints with K2 skis are that their top sheets chip up pretty easily. I rode a couple pairs of public enemies for a few seasons and now have a pair of seths as my all around ski and I absolutely love them. k2s are the shit.

My domains are killing it. All of last season and this season and i only got topsheet cracks and a couple of minor scratches. After i bought them i read reviews that the bases are so shitty that you can scratch them with your finger nail . But that's some bullshit. I rode through a field of fucking rocks and i came out with one hole about the sise of a a penny and like 1mm deep. Cant wait till i get another pair next year.STOKED

In 7 years working in a shop, I have never taken a k2 back in a warranty claim. I don't ski k2, but the previous statement should say all you need to know.

I've skied my kung fujas since last season, heavily and have no problem with them, all I get is some cuts from the opposite edge which is normal, but only cosmetic.

I think due to a bunch of hate, they're somehow underrated, If you get a good deal on them, you can't go wrong (I got mine brand new unmounted with griffons for 315€)
