this is one of those instances where ignorance is so glaring you almost squint. for better or worse, slope skiing is going to have no major differences from the other events in its danger, structure, presentation...anything.

drunk and high urban skiing wasnt added to the olympics, a highly structured version of "newschool" skiing was, and to cry about it for THIS reason just makes you look like a sour old man out of his element

that being said, i wouldn't lose too much sleep over what a TV anchor's uneducated opinion of skiing is so let's just wait and see how the olympics go before we take the pitchforks out of the shed

yeah i agree, we shouldn't want to lynch the dude. the dude has a complete misunderstanding of the sport and thats fine. i totally get it. that being said, freeskiers have been taking flak since day one. no need to freak out over some ignorant media comment.

But seriously, this is how freeskiing will be introduced to so many people. That's the issue. Saying we're wild and like to party is one thing but what Bob Costas said made it sound like that is whole story.

Yes, and football players are all juicehead buffoons, cycling is for roid monkeys, and hockey is glorified gladiator fighting.

Every sport has it's unfair stereotypes, its inevitable that some people will see the sport like this when it is shown at the Olympics.

It's just kind of silly to try to cast slopestyle as a "stunt sport" or in some way an "extreme, just doin' it for the rush of adrenaline" sport or something, when skeleton has been in the olympics for quite some time now.

agreed.  he did not grow up with this and he isnt the target demographic.  Just bc it's in the Olympics doesnt mean everyone will suddenly respect the sport....and frankly who cares what he thinks.  The IOC added slopestyle bc they know it will boost ratings to sell ad spots, help them move to digital platforms, and bring in younger audiences.  It's just really sad that he made that blanket statement and put down so many athletes that put thier blood, sweat and tears into this for most of, if not all their lives.  Shit!  Sarah Burke practically died for this on the women's side, as well as other athletes/ppl sacrificing a lot to make this happen, and for him to make a narrow minded comment like that just shows that he does not understand the first thing about the sport and should not be speaking to it.  It's just disappointing that someone who claims to be a professional makes a dumb comment like that.  I was embarrased for him.

You know what? I ain't even mad. I'm actually kinda stoked, cause look freeskiing compared to other olympic sports. It's homies going out and having a good time and doing stupid shit. I would rather my sport be portrayed the way it actually is.

Freestyle skiing consists of riders and athletes wearing baggy camo clothing and flashing gang signs at cameras. Over half of us probably smoke and party and were a pretty laid back and chill community. I'd say Bob Costas hit the nail right on the head. If you disagree, you shouldn't overreact who cares. Maybe I got it all wrong and he said that because of the crazy tricks and flying through the air but whatever just my first reaction.

In a way I think you are right, the lifestyle/persona of many skiers might square against the sensibilities of most people at the Olympics, but IMO, there is something fundamentally different from what skiers do and what people on "Jackass" and other movies/shows like that do. If you look at some of the great things about skiing; all the movies, photos, segments, comp runs, pow days, kid landing his first trick etc., there is a certain skill, style, flavour, (or whatever you want to call it), in it all. While there are inherent risks in both skiing and "Jackass", and while these dangers may be capitalized on in both things, the similarity stops there. At the end of the day, there is nothing that amazing about some buffoon running through hallway with a bunch of tasers hanging from the ceiling- anyone can do that. However the end result of riding away from something scary on skis is rewarding, a display of skill, and sometimes even beautiful, even an art.(movie segment, photo, etc.)

I mean, Bob Costas obviously has no idea what he is talking about, but if you showed him a Candide Kamera or something like that, I'm sure he might see a little more to freeskiing than a simple reveling of self-harm (like Jackass).

I have no idea if any of that made sense.

Wtf is this shit... First of all he called out slope style, meaning both skiing and snowboarding, so this isn't just against skiers.

Btw most skiers do not flash gang signs at cameras, in fact only 2 riders have ever really done that. Baggy cameo clothing is just apart of the attire for the sport, just like skin tight spandex is for racing, there is nothing wrong with that. And yea actually a lot of people smoke and party, nothing really wrong with that either in the grand scheme of things. But you should care about what this guy is saying, as he is saying it to the entire fucking world on a scale never seen before in this sport.

Being chill and laid back is a far different meaning than Costas linking us to Jackass who essentially are mindless stupid stunts which almost always have almost certain likelihood of injury or mutilation. I doubt Costas called Shawn White winning gold in pipe last Olympics just another jackass stun, pretty fucking ignorant for him to call slope style that.

At the end of the day he is just an ignorant old man who doesn't know what he is talking about. But I hope he changes his attitude and learns a thing or two so he doesn't turn off every single parent who kid wants to start skiing or snowboarding because they think they their kid wants to be the next Johnny Knoxville.

Fuck Bob Costas. I don't know how much he paid off or who he traded his organs to to land this gig, but I just became that much less stoked about the olympics. And I've been having a blast watching the speedskating and curling qualifiers, but now knowing I'll have to see and most importantly HEAR that jackass...ugh...

but I don't really care what his comments are about freeskiing. As far as I'm concerned, he has no good insight into any sport he covers and isn't worth listening to in the first place. I tuned him out long ago.

I just find it incredibly ironic that Newschoolers feels the need to get so upset over what Bob Costas said, yet continues to idolize people like the Inspired crew, Hood crew, 4bi9, and and others. Who all happen to be "famous" in the newschool ski world for acting like jackasses.

also, 4bi9 inspired etc are "famous" for being really good skiers, and there are tons of people that are straight laced and also "famous" for their good skiing. we have the full spectrum and the only thing they all have in common is their high level of skiing

I think the people defending Costas misunderstood the tone and context of his comment. Personally it bothered me because he likened it to Jackass and how they just decided to call it an Olympic sport, as if the athletes have no skill or athleticism and merely throw themselves blindly off jumps and rails hoping to not get hurt. We don't watch X games to see people inflict injury upon themselves. We watch to see crazy stuff that takes a lot of skill and practice. Sure they huck, but they aren't trying to wreck themselves.

Even Nitro Circus would've been a bit better of a comparison, but still inaccurate. I mean those Jackass guys put their penis' in boxes to be bit by other creatures. Don't think that equates to slopestyle skiing at all.

who the fuck cares what Bob Costas thinks? Hes a little old midget piece of shit that never acomplished anything outside of wining about other people. And right after he finished talking shit about slope style, he started talking about figure skating like it was as much of a real sport as fucking basketball. I personally thing it would make US look bad if we had shit heads like Costas talking about how cool our sport is.
