Anyone else see that documentary "Blackfish"? Super well made film that documents killer whales in captivity. Made me hate the human race even more than I already do.

I recently watched that documentary and I agree it's pretty interesting and well made. Although I think the only things I learned about Sea World were the shady politics and the known history of violence of some of their whales. The rest of the treatment issues seemed inherent to any zoo, it's bad and unnatural. I mean they knowingly purchased a whale that had dragged a trainer into the water and killed her, and also bred an enormous percentage of their animals from that whale!

I'm not saying there is a proper or safe or even ethically sound way to captivate an animal of that size, but that was a fucked up piece of information.

Furthermore, I found myself wondering why I thought it's okay to captivate some animals but not whales. I guess there is a certain level of intelligence and emotional capability/awareness that substantiates a plea to leave them in the wild, and those orca were amazingly smart.

As much as I loved zoo's growing up I guess I was too naive as a child to realize what captivity does to animals. It's really a shame that we continue to put animals on display for our amusement.

As soemone who has stated before the "documentary" is made to portray seaworld in a bad light. I think they're only fault is as the previous poster said regardign buying deadly fish.

It was a good doc, but i think the only reason we care so much about them so well is because we can relate to them.

If every living being has that "spark" that is life, why do we choose to care about some life more than other life? Human to human yes, its our species, but outside of that why do we value more intelligent life? Isn't the spark the same regardless?

Yes. And zoos. I am all for wildlife reservations, sanctuaries and the like. I don't even particularly
Mind safaris to take tourists out to see the animals. But wild things need space. Sea world and zoos just don't have enough. Blegh.


Though on the flip side, the BEST place for toddlers-7 year olds.

ok so I just finished watching this, and it is really really sad and disturbing. You know the shit is fucked when the majority of the men in the documentary are brought to tears.

I can't believe that Dawn trainer denied Tilikum of his food after he waved to the audience for like five minutes-- what an idiot.

I saw the movie when it was out in theatres this summer. I do feel bad for these whales, but I have seen humans put animals through way way worse shit than these whales will ever have to deal with. I am 100% against seaworld, or any for-profit zoos. I just think that what they do is relatively harmless compared to what non-vegetarians do to animals.

You're not serious, right? We do not equate the value of all human beings. Talk all you like but our actions demonstrate that pretty clearly. The obvious example being, regardless of whether you'd like to admit it an African life is worth considerably less than a European or American life. You think the kind of shit that happens there would be ignored if it happened in England? You think the international response to a natural disaster in Southeast Asia is the same as if it happened in California? Cmon now. Imagine if what happened in Rwanda happened in France, instead, you think the international response would be a shrug?

I realize that's a bit of a digression but perspective please.

This thread didn't take long to go from Sea World to U.S. foreign policy lol. I agree though. We clearly value human life differently. Look at the way we view people in the middle east, parts of asia, africa vs. ourselves.

We're pretty far removed from reality. We view other cultures the same way we view other people. I'm important, I deserve to get whats mine, and everyone else can get fucked.

All of us are chillin together on this giant spinning rock in space. The least we could do is try to be civil to those around us. Instead of looking for differences to fuel our hate, find our common bonds and try to live in relative peace.

i heard some equally fucked stories from Marineland; ontarios half-assed attempt at a aquatic amusement park in Niagara falls. The guy i heard interviewed used to work there as a teenager and recounted some really fucked stories about how they treated the animals, and how they disposed of the dead ones without people outside the park having to know the poor things even died.

Watched it last night, OP. Shit is tragic. It depressed me, especially after learning a little about their natural behaviors and tendencies. They're smart as hell, super social and capable, yet they just get paraded around in shitty enclosures for fat tourists to gawk at. Shameful.

Why can't we just focus on the mistreatment of a particular group of whales, by a particular group of people?

Why lose focus by changing the topic to world wide politics-- sure, that conversation obviously needs to take place, too, but you don't ignore one wrong because there are other wrongs, or nothing gets done.
