HELP me with my midi controller

I went out and got an M-audio axiom 49 first gen midi controller off craigslist this summer. I'm trying to just play around with it on Garage band for the time being but my macbook wont recognize that i have the controller plugged in.

It's class compliant, so theres nothing i need to download to play it, i should be able to just plug it in and go via usb. the controller turns on and everything, but it wont send data to my macbook.

Has anyone run into this problem before? or is this midi controller just trash?

i always had to use a midi interface with my setup, but it wasnt a mac. I was using windows vista and Cubase LE 4, my midi controller was a Yamaha S90-ES and the interface I used was a Tascam US-122MKii. im not sure what your controller does but I have always needed the Tascam thing to get the actual midi data into Cubase, even though I had a USB midi cable, it just went into the tascam and not directly into the computer (which wouldnt recognize the midi data i guess)

Its been years since i messed with this type of recording stuff, and even at the time I was like, 16 and had a very basic knowledge of what I was doing. Theres a good DAW cult on here, try messaging the guy who runs it. his username is Alex or some variant of the name alex i think and he is quite knowledgeable.

Is your computer detecting the MIDI device in System Preferences? Are you configuring your DAW to receive that midi by setting it up in the DAW preferences/arming the track for the midi channel + monitoring?

Ya, I tried using an interface also, I even tried it using both usb and midi in and out. but thanks for the link. I'll definitely look into that.
