Shoot an animated gif

I want to see a good photographer go out with the purpose of shooting an animated gif. Not a video converted to a gif, but a photo meant to be one... done by a photographer.

Wouldn't that be sick?

I think that would be sick, but there are limitations when shooting photos explicitly. Not for people who have cameras 5Ds or 1Ds because they can fire off a ton of photos in rapid succession, but consumer cameras couldn't pull off that kind of speed that it would looks smooth enough animated. IMO it would look just fine if someone shot a video at 1080p with a photography standpoint in mind, cut down the framerate in post to like 12 or 14, and made the video a gif. I suppose there are limitations in sharpness and editability of the photos, but resolution wise, a gif that would be wider than 800 or so pixels is too big. I agree that doing this with photographs would yield a better result, but shooting a video is the next best thing and can still produce something of a high quality.

Yeah more like a cinemagraph. So essentially just a single shot, so its designed to be a one trick animated .gif.... however it is shot with one of those cameras that is a photography camera that shoots video (sorry for being stupid about camera types).

So that your end product looks like this:

I don't agree with this for said clip but now I get what you're looking for. I feel like it was just a shot from the camera that he made a gif.

Ack - sorry my english was totally wrong there.

I meant that the idea that I'm talking about should be shot with a photography mind and a photography camera... that example was sort of it, but that was taken with a video camera and shot as a video clip.

Ha, you're good!

I forgot to do this type of thing this weekend shooting urban, I'll do it next time I'm out filming. I won't be able to do it with pics, but I'll try to bring the concepts of photography into a video that I can make into a gif, maybe even do some After Effects to make it less a gif of a video and more of a cinemagraph like previously mentioned.

Like a really well put together composition of one trick. So we essentially get what I like to call, the harry potter effect. Which is moving pictures.

A really well done cinemagraph could be absolutely epic. like a still of a super dope shifty 180 where you just animate and loop the shifty.

I think same concept but do the whole trick would be sick though. That was what my original idea was like.

We're getting somewhere here though.

There's a guy at the top right, he did do it, it would just be a lot more noticable/better with a lot of people, maybe if you were being towed by a car and you froze the car people would get it.

Well. I set up the camera on a tripod that fits the whole trick in the shot. I import the shot into After Effects and manually animate a mask around just the skier so he is the only one moving. That's the hard/long part. Then I export it, reduce the frame rate, and convert it to a gif. Maybe I'll make a tutorial I can post in here if there's enough interest.

I think the people also have to look like they are moving in the still image too. Maybe like a skier weaving through people on a run. Or a wide shot of a park run with just one skier hitting a jump line. I think keystone (or any other large park for that matter) could be really good for that because of the layout of the park and on any given day there would be a lot of people so it would be easy to imply motion in the still part of the image.

Well there's a difference between a gif and a cinemagraph since a cinemagraph is specifically edited so only the subject moves and everything else is frozen... So it necessitates pretty intense After Effects masking.

And not trying to downplay any of the stuff done by you when I say that (cause both of yours are straight fucking awesome and I'm stoked that you're probably one of the first people going out shooting with that intent), I'm just meaning people are able to do it with just photoshop too. Same idea though, just intensive masking I think.

And maybe AE is more effective in producing it. I don't really know. I haven't done it, so really I'm not the one to talk haha.
