It has nothing to do with staying there to stabilize the region. We stay everywhere we go. Look at all the troops we have all over the world. Countries we haven't been at war with in decades yet have thousands of troops stationed in.

YEah, the United States learned nothing from the Soviet Union in terms of Afghanistan.

Once we entered it we were committed to spending 50 years there unless we wanted to leave and hand it back over immediately.  Might have not been such a problem place if we didn't arm the taliban and prop up a horrible regime in the 70s when Afghanis were fighting the USSR. 


Maintaining a moderate presence of troops there is the only option at this point even if we probably should never have gone there.  If you have fucked up and basically invaded a sovereign nation for little to no gain or reason you might as well keep 10,000 troops there and keep it a semblance of democracy (I think its hard to say since I wish we just hadn't bothered.)


Iraq is sort of the opposite.  Iraq was the only big country in the region which we could invade and get away with it as in not biting off more than we can chew.  Just look at Libya and Syria and you will see why the Imperialist Empire of the United States basically wanted to pick out an important country other than Isreal in the Middle East to control.  Iran or Saudi Arabia we not only might have lost but furthermore occupation would be a 50 year job similar to Afghanistan.

In all honesty, if the Afghans gave two shits about their country as a whole we wouldn't need to be there another 10 years. We've been there over 10 years as is. Another, 10 years is bullshit. So fuck them, and when they finally decide to get rid of the jihadists and truly want to change as a nation, then maybe NATO can go in and save the day.

Its a waste but we waste money on the military no matter what.  WHen those values change I'll agree completely.  Until then since having a huge army is inevitable and we've already invaded the place you might as well keep the troops there.


N Korea is just a farce the United States has to create foreign enemies to justify military spending the media is basically bullshitting about Kim Jung Il (or whatever this ones name is) North Korea is as much of a threat as fucking Cuba.

So yeah as long as we are wasting all this money on the military and continuing this bullshit imperialist behavior in the name of the American Corporate Empire keeping troops in Afghanistan (the one place on earth where terrorism is part of the culture and and a way of life on a similar level to Chechnia) isn't a huge deal to me.

This 50 year commitment bullshit is just that..bullshit. It doesn't have to be that way. War is not the answer.

I am a veteran and too was tricked into joining and did the whole combat zone deployment yada yada. I wouldn't exactly say I was tricked though. I was a product of my close minded environment. I was just simply not aware of the truths of what the government and the military really is. This country is so brainwashed, it's crazy. A one month break from military spending could send everyone in our country to college..think about that.

I bought the bullshit too.  I voted republican and supported the military.  Im still hardly a democrat/liberal.

I question my values all the time and whether I am a meathead and part of the problem for being a military history buff.

The 50 year comment is in reference to the experiences of the Soviet Union, and the fact that Afghanistan is an unsolvable problem just like Chechnia.  Those are the 2 places where terrorism cannot be eradicated, and terrorism transcends muslim fundamentalism.  Even the fall of the Soviet Union didn't solve the Chechan problem.  There will probably be an attack on the Olympics too I give it an 80% chance something horrible happens in Sochi thats the dumbest fucking place to stage an olympics.


The second we entered Afghanistan we bit off a serious long term problem.  Leaving it will result in the place being worse than it was to begin with (meaning the power that triumphs over the United States and forces them to leave will probably expand beyond Afghanistan once the United States leaves we completely raised the stakes entering it just leaving isn't the best idea.)

If your going to have huge military spending and a massive standing and active army you might as well keep a decent porportion always stationed in Afghanistan after you fucked up and invaded to begin with.  We already invaded it and there is little to no chance of them governing themselves responsibly for 2 full generations (hence the 50 year comment.)


Afghanistan isn't the dumbest war we've been in Vietnam for example was worse.  I am speaking only geographically and talking theoretically of things like they are a game of risk but geographically Afghanistan is of incredible importance because holding it means that Russia can never have access to the Arabian sea and a warm water port surrounded by oil.  WIth their natural resources its envisionable they could be an equal super power to us.  It also prevents China for having direct access to the middle east and its oil.  Its a good country to hold to effectively cock block any expansionist ideas Russia or China could get.  Again another reason we aren't leaving for at least 50 years.

(That last paragraph is theoretical and hardly serious but you only have to look at a map to know why the USSR coveted Afghanistan so badly and to understand how geographically dominant Russia could be if it were to occupy all the 'Stans' while completely splitting the Middle East from Asia.  They had plenty of reason to spend well over a decade fighting for it.)

If you want a real enemy, and one that is 10x as dangerous as N Korea is being made out to be, isn't completely make believe like N Korea is, and is way worse than Iran or Saudi Arabia are.....

Leave Afghanistan and let a horrible terrorist regime take over and control what is now Afghanistan and Pakistan.  (Which is what could happen if a strong united power was able to triumph over the USA.)

I understand everything you are saying. I just wish it didn't have to be this way. The way I am referring too is saying that it's a good idea to have control of oil/poppy countries instead of spending the money on our own people. I know it's obviously oil > people but it is fucking disgusting..all the while we are creating more enemies around the world..

a foreign country cant stabilize the situvation in a country that have such internal tensions. the last time a government had controll over the whole country was in 1979. in less than 40 years it have been a monarchy, communist state, theocracy and a republic. the taliban will probably figth on as long as a fair share of the population sympathize with them.

Both our wars were severely underestimated, mostly on purpose by our then leaders to get people on board who wanted vengeance for 9/11, but weren't on board for the long expensive thankless job of nation building that would plague the country for the next generation

North Korea isn't much of a direct threat to the US, but they are an enormous threat to South Korea which is obviously a close ally of ours. I have several Korean friends who live in Seoul in range of NK artillery and I'm sure it's something they just try to ignore. If Kim Jong Un (yes, Kim Jong Il has been dead for a long time dude....) goes nuts and starts shooting, I imagine hundreds of thousands of people are going to die in a very short period of time.

Canadians are still there working hand in hand with the US and several other NATO nations....
