North Korea isn't much of a direct threat to the US, but they are an enormous threat to South Korea which is obviously a close ally of ours. I have several Korean friends who live in Seoul in range of NK artillery and I'm sure it's something they just try to ignore. If Kim Jong Un (yes, Kim Jong Il has been dead for a long time dude....) goes nuts and starts shooting, I imagine hundreds of thousands of people are going to die in a very short period of time.
That threat needs to be deterred because the body count would be unbearable for the Korean people if someone went nuts and started a war, which is absolutely a reasonable assumption if you know anything about NK.
It's not media bullshit, but it's easy to think so from the comfort of your couch in the safety of the US borders.
