Look PX12 vs. Look Pivot 14 vs. Marker Griffon

So I am torn between these bindings. I've heard to go with the griffons because they are lighter. If they really aren't much lighter than the Looks I would go with one of them. I would get the Pivot 14s but I am lightweight and binding DIN calculators tell me to go with 4.5 din and the pivots minimum is 5. Do you think this is bullshit and that 5 would be fine for anyone? My new skis are wider and my older narrower ones were set at 4. Will the wider and longer ski warrant the jump to a DIN of 5 or am I just overthinking all this? What would you do in my situation? Thanks

I hate to tell you, but if you are going to run a din of 4.5 it is highly likely that a binding that starts at 4 will still not rest out properly at 4.5. If you are really running a din of 4.5 you should use something like the marker squire or peak/mojo 11 that starts at 3.

I feel like I need a higher DIN because last season I remember at least 5 pre releases and never a fall that was bad and the skis stayed on. But even so a din of 5 on a binding that starts at 5 is relatively stronger than a 5 on a binding that starts at 3.5?

That's not how din settings work, each setting corresponds to a code with an associated torque range that the binding must test into, if you are in the middle of the din range of a binding, it is of a higher likelyhood that the binding will test out properly and continue to function properly over the life of that binding. You NEVER want to buy a binding that starts with the din setting that you are planning on running because there is a high likelyhood that the binding will not operate properly at the lowest level of din. If you are skiing at a 4.5 or 5, it is highly unlikely that you are going to put enough force into an 11 din binding to break it. You may WANT a higher din binding because that is war everybody recommends as their personal favorite, but you just do not need it and would be much better suited by a 10 or 11 din binder.

As far as the prerelease issue is concerned, I can't really give you any advice other than saying the industry recommended din chart has never really done me wrong as far as release is concerned, if you are having issues it is probably worth getting your bindings looked at as you might have a problem with forward pressure. Also the din charts are just guidelines and you are free to do whatever you want with your own gear.

more information is needed. whats your weight, height, and age? what kind of skiing are you doing on these bindings? whats your skill level? all three of these bindings are pretty different systems, so we need more info before we can really help you

despite what others on NS say, the griffon is a very solid binding. Now more than ever, the 13/14 griffon has been re-done with new metal toe and heel pieces of the Jester. Id still go FKS/Pivot over griffon/jester, but the griffon/jester is WAYYYYYYY better than the px/axial.

I hate rossignol/look bindings without the turntable heel. I blew my knee on a axial2 140 set at 8 the first time i fell on it, yet i have FKS 180s set at 11 and they release when i fall. maybe the axial was just a malfunctioning set, but nevertheless i will never ski on a look/rossi besides the turntable versions.

As said above, I've also heard that setting bindings to their start and end values are not good. I highly recommend Look. I've got the Pivot 14s. If you want to set at 4 or 4.5 go with the PX12s

It sounds like you either fell very awkwardly (slow twisting) or your forward pressure was way too high. Did you take the bindings to a different shop than the one that mounted them after the injury and have them inspected.

When you talk to binding engineers, they will deny this. Its a myth, since DIN is a standard system that means if it says 8, it will release at 8. companies actually have to pay for new bindings to be tested to DIN standards, and no way in hell would they waste it on misleading settings...

Its like a speedometer. obviously old/shitty cars have speedometers out of whack, but when they are brand new, that speedometer is spot on. same goes for bindings and their DIN setting.

it was fairly awkward, i got one ski caught under a log, and i flipped. but the binding never released and the log came with me as i flipped. DIN set at 8, it should've released. Im 6'3 185, and 8 din is low for my size and ability, i normally ski at 10-11 with no problems. I only kept them at 8 because my dad used them and they didnt release for him, so i suspected problems early on. i should have never skied them after that, but luckily it was only my meniscus.

I ended up returning it to backcountry, and never got it release tested, but im almost positive that it was a bad set of them. The forward pressure was perfect as done by a ski tech, and din was low, and they still didnt release for either my father (220 lbs) or me. Sometimes you just get a malfunctioning set, and unfortunately that means surgery, tho again luckily only my meniscus.

That is really not just how they test unfortunately, I have seen way too many brand new bindings testing too high recently in their lower din ranges.

this dude knows whats up. i wouldn't put markers on my skis, just personal preference. but i know plenty of people that love them and won't ever give them up. i'm about to put fks 140s (same thing as pivot 14s). but, i've seen and used px/axial bindings, and they're terrible. markers are much much better. pivot 14s and griffons are both great bindings, but i would stay clear of the px/axial lines

The toe pieces used in the Px axial bindings are the same as the pivot and fks.

I am 130 lb, 5`10",and am moving more into park. Ive always done jumps and the half-pipe well, like 30ft jumps and getting air out of a 12 foot wall pipe, but I couldn't handle basic rails. So I am getting a set of skis with a larger waist. I have line masterminds with an 80mm waist and 167 length. The pre-release would happen on nose butters and sometimes from landing on knuckles. This is with 151 cm skis and a DIN of 4 in the front and 4.5 in the back

the 18 din versions have the race toe (metal) and i think that it doesnt have a vertical release.

altough DIN is DIN, there are far too many people talking about skiing a binder withing 2 DIN of its min/max settings, that it shouldnt be overlooked. No matter what a company says it does, i like to listen to the anecdotal evidence.

all i know for sure is you cant go wrong buying a binder in which you sit right in the middle of the DIN.

If you are Din 4 or 4.5, pivot 14 or fks 140 won't work for you

if you are lightweight and require a din of 4-5, save yourself the cash and get the squire.
