So im considering getting a gopro for christmas and I need some advice.

firstly I need to say that I will use it as an on mountain alternative to my canon, because I don't want to do follow shots with a camera I could risk breaking.

the only pov I would do would be in pow so mostly third person filming.

I am also quite keen on photography

My questions are-

Is it worth it? they are really expensive, so idk if I should get one

Which edition should I get?

how durable are they eg will they survive being thrown around?

Anything else I should know?

PS I know most of you hate go pros but I will use it in a way that is not "12 year old park POV edit"

but that candide POV thing was really cool, and he used a bit of third person.

Have you used a GoPro??

I like gopros for POV. They really dont belong on a stick. I know GoPro puts out some awesome 3rd person videos but lets be real they are using their version of GoPros, not the consumer version.

wut? care to explain in what way the gopros gopro use are any different than the consumer black edition and how this version makes it more suited for other shots than pov?

To be honest, it would be better to save another few hundred and get a dslr. So many more capabilities

The point is I already have a canon 60d with quite a few lenses, but I wanted something I wouldn't worry about breaking on the hill that is easy to use and makes decent video.

I am not a camera expert, and I dont know everything. It seems a bit fishy that the quality of the shots they have on there videos are insane. But when you use your camera with there recommended settings it turns out not nearly as clear, or when you watch a consumer video. Its almost like when game developers put out a trailer for their new game they always use a very powerful system so there graphics look as good as can be. Thats just a theory.

Disregard basically everything this guy ^^^ has said.

1. Go pros ads are amazing quality because they pay biggggg bucks to get those shots. Are you flying over Patagonian mountain peaks or getting the shot with Kelly Slater in Hawaii? No, you're filming a shitty pencil 3 at your average mid-west bump of a hill. They have stabilization systems that cost wayyyy more than the camera does, professional editors/colourists, etc etc.

2. Go Pros are effective at what they are made for. It's something you can treat poorly, film in all conditions, etc. IMO it's much better used to film someone else, partly because I usually dislike POV (it gets boring with an amateur rider). IDK why you think it's expensive, it really isn't. Also tons of used HD heros are kicking around. If you're not getting the top of the line model, you might as well get an older HD hero (1080@30, 720@60, etc).

The newer gopros have sharper video and the ability to shoot at higher fps for slow motion and higher resolutions like 2.7k and 4k at 15 fps.

Sorry, I missed that part. The newer GoPro's seem to have pretty good specs ie 120fps 720p or 60fps 1080p.

Idk if you can do this after you already bought a camera, but it got a square trade warranty with my 60d that covers drops and spills.. It's less than 300 dollars for 3 years I think, and it would cover breaking your cam on the hill. Might be something to look into

Filling in some blanks if I can here, if you want to get a gopro, I would highlyyyyy recommend the newer ones, I had the original HD Hero that was the first one to shoot 1080 and 720@60fps. It was a cool camera at the time, but mannnnnn have the lenses gotten sharper. That alone is easily worth it. The old ones (HD Hero 1 and 2) are HD sure, but the lens doesn't compare to the 3 or 3+. Also color accuracy is way better. I used to spend forever trying to color correct, and couldn't get it as good looking as I'd have liked. Anyone also correct me if I'm wrong but the 3's even the white edition have better lens and color correcting than the original. So if I were you looking for a secondary camera - a 2 or 3 hundred dollar white or silver edition gopro is definitely worth it. Don't cheap out and go with the Hero 2 because you can find one for even 100 bucks. I'd still pay twice as much for a white.

they get all that but GoPro every once in a while throws them a camera with an updated chip or whatnot... for the most part everything they use is stock but i have seen what they will throw in the mix every once in a while and its badass...

Meh, I mean not really, but if you're so set on getting one by all means, it's not like its a bad alternative.

They are built to be durable. YOU WILL NOT BREAK THESE WHILE IT IS IN THE CASE. End of story

Anything else I should know?

consider investing in an iglide by glidecam.... I think they are $129 and they are great, they are made for smaller cameras and they add something that no other gopro edits have. smooth footage.

Also maybe consider buying a cheap external mic and a recorder then syncing the audio (I don't recommend putting the mic into the gopro because it makes it not waterproof).

When I was making the upgrade, I had a hard time choosing between the hero 3 black, or the hero 3+ silver. I had a 300 dollar budget, which is why it was between these two. I ended up going with the 3+ silver, but I have yet to be anything but impressed.

Not sure how serious you're going to get, but the 3+ silver does a hell of a job for its price. GoPro's get a lot of bad rep on here, but if you use them right, they're killer.

But really those are sick I never knew they had them. Kinda silly to spend $130 on a mini glidecam though when the quality of the camera is eh. I have a Hero 3 Black edition and I love it, but me and my friends all suck and half the time were fucking around, so it's something to look back on and laugh at. If you are looking to make quality edits with quality skiing I say get a DSLR. I'm looking at the T3i currently.

You are correct in saying that a t3i is the better option. I actually have a t3i haha but it seemed that OP wanted a gopro... so the way I said it is the best way to do it with a gopro

He already owns a 60D, but he's worried about breaking it on the hill. I totally understand that, and I admire his caution. That said, if you're set on getting a 500 gopro rather than a $500 camcorder, say, definitely get either a hero 3 black or hero 3+. Anything lower than that won't be worth the money.

The newest gopros are an incredible deal for what you're getting. 400 bucks for 4k, 1080 at 60 fps, and the fact that it's nearly impossible to break makes it a great all around package

I actually read the OP but completely forgot about the 60D part and now I feel dumb.

Anyway as I said before, I have a Hero 3 and love it. I was looking at the 3+ and I'm happy with the 3 because all the new one has is cosmetic things. Lighter, smaller, and thinner are things that don't really matter to me when I already have a ridiculously light GoPro.

Idk much about this stuff. but id say gopro would be more convenient. You can just put it in your pocket everytime you go out and when you wanna film just whip it out
