Advice for Being a Gypsy at Mt. Hood?

Hey NS. I know that next summer is a ways away, but a few friends and I want to move up to Hood next summer and live out of tents. I just want to know any advice people have who have done it in the past. I know that this thread: https://www.newschoolers.com/ns/forums/readthread/thread_id/379775/page/2/ is chockfull of advice, but it doesn't say too much about living in tents. Any help would be appreciated. Also, +k for helpful posts.

If you live in a tent, put a tarp underneath it and did a drainage ditch around it. Wet moldy tent bottoms kinda suck.

usually temps in the 50s-60s, but know how to stay dry because it usually rains a ton june-early july. tie tarps between trees and make yourself some covered areas, high quality tents with a good rain cover/shield are a must as well.

dont leave phones/electronics/valuables in plain sight, gypsies arent always the honest type.

make friends with other skiers/boarders for obvious reasons

well i posted that thread a day ago so not sure why your reposting but if  you really need to learn the tricks of a true gypsy piece of shit then go camping for a week and see what you learn. living in a tent at hood is the same as living in a tent anywhere, you just need a good spot.

Live at the airstrip. Get a job at Ski Bowl, Timberline or in Govy. Ski all day. Party all night. Have the illest summer ever.

If you can, buy it in Sandy at the Safeway or Fred Meyer, since govy prices are always jacked up. avoid perishables.

Learn to make cheap foods with a portable stove. Don't just eat ramen noodles everyday, buy different canned foods and veggies. Be creative.

If you want to be a real gypsy dirt bag you can go to the food bank and tell them you're homeless. They will load you up with all sorts of goodies.

The entire Mt Hood area is just plain gross in the summer. It is a beautiful place that has been destroyed by scum bag skiers and boarders, like most of you posting in this thread.


If I ever went back there I would stay in a hotel or rent a home in Hood River.

Keep in mind Hood is quite humid most of the spring and summer so camping pretty much just ends up being swamp ass 24/7. Save your money and rent a place for the summer.. It will make your experience much more enjoyable.

I don't know when you went, but my experience over the past few years has shown me nothing worse than just a lot of people. It's far from a wilderness area, but you have to expect that since it's so close to Portland.

I went a few years back and had a house and it was still horrible.

The place is full of gypsys and scumbag kids living in the middle of the woods, garbage all over, hitchiking everywhere. The area looks the same as an inner city food shelter except with trees and some snow.


It is a matter of time before something gets done up there in the summer from the State. The scumb bag life style is just hurting the area from the normal tourists who come to be tourists and stay at the lodge and take pictures of snow in June. Area needs to be cleaned up.

It's not humid and shitty like east of the Rockies at all, actually. Not even remotely. You get rain off and on until July, which is always accompanied by lower temps, like mid 60s in the mountains. Then you get almost two whole months with almost no rainfall and low humidity. July and August around here are really pleasant for the most part.
That's not to say that getting a house won't be more comfortable, because I'm sure it is.

In regards to renting a house, I'm hoping to spend as little as possible on this, so I'd rather just tent. Also, what is the cost of a summer pass and how long is the mountain open?

summer pass is like $800, unless you work at Tline and then you get a free ticket for every day you work. when i lived there i paid 250/mo for a fairly accomindating cabin in welches (about 10 minutes from govy), all in all i finished the summer with about 3000 in savings, went skiing 3+ days a week, and didn't have to live in a tent the entire summer...but some people just prefer the gypsy life, cant take that away from you.

Because, there will be at least three of us taking up a single car. Which leads me to another question. Would it be more worth hitchhiking or driving to the mountain and paying for gas. Also, I'm debating whether a job at T-line or buying a summer pass would be more worth it, considering the fact that I may not be up the entire summer (sadly). Also, is getting a job at T-line difficult or in high demand?
