As you may or may not know, advertisements are how we keep Newschoolers running. The majority of our readers understand this and support the site by not blocking ads on it.

Why should I unblock ads on this website?

Because they enable us to keep Newschoolers free! Not only do they do that, but they allow us to reward our content creators, offer new features, better coverage and much, much more.

Does blocking ads really negatively impact you guys?

Yes! Very much so, and not only Newschoolers, but other sites/people in the industry who depend on ads to survive.

If 50% of our users are using adblock, we need to work twice as hard just to sustain Newschoolers.

What should I do then?

Please support us by unblocking ads on Newschoolers.com. This helps keep things going, and creating the content that you're checking out.

I feel some of your ads are too instrusive.

We work with some of the most reputable ad companies, and although we're not perfect, our ads shouldn't auto-play audio or cause too much havoc for you. If that does happen, please let us know so we can get it fixed.

How can I support Newschoolers if I really do hate ads?

Buy some Newschoolers merchandise, become a donator, contribute positively to the website, share links on Facebook, etc.

I'm not blocking ads, but I'm seeing a message that I am!

Please let us know what your web browser is, and what platform you're viewing the site from (mobile phone, computer, etc.) and we'll investigate this and try and fix it.

yea. but if they're the reason you have adblock on completely, then just block the ones you don't like so NS at least gets a bit out of your browsing. better than nothing right

Windows 7 was pretty good sure, and I've just started windows 8, I'm not a fan, how the fuck are you supposed to quickly shutdown? I could do it on a keyboard in half a second, now I have to go to desktop, alt+f4 and that takes me ~5. It may be a small deal, but it's one of many issues.

Also appears to have a terrible problem with service host processes, was constantly running at 100% disk write whenever I did anything, often 95% even when I was idle with no programs open. Managed to fix it, but it took a while and seems to be a very common problem.

Don't even get me started on the new apps, whatever they're called, the full screen applications are just really slow compared to the windows 7 equivalent and as such I'm using none of them.

If I'm missing out on something please call me a fucking idiot and let me know, as I really would like to benefit from it in some way.

i don't like windows 8 either...but windows 7 is actually better than XP now that i've adjusted to it. you really start to notice where XP was lacking. XP was so innovative and ahead of it's time.........in 2003

but the trick to shutdown on windows 8 is:

windows key + r

type cmd

hit enter

type shutdown -s -t 0

hit enter

I started running ad-block when I was using a computer with a teeny tiny screen. Not having ads made it soooo much easier to navigate everything. I put it on my desktop when I started seeing coked out hoes in FD wear. but seeing as the hoes are all gone, I will turn off adblock permanently

One thing I don't like with the ads is it intrudes on the website's content:

What you could do is mode the sidebar adspace to the top and have two ads at the top. move the user info to where friends are ( i know it's crude, but I made it in like 5 mins soo)

The only thing I was saying is that you can't expect a blue named member to rally the troops to save the site. I wasn't saying it's time to implement the take-this-sponsor-survey-to-see-the-page-below advertising method.

Are there still 15 second ads before every video? I forgot those exist I've been ad-blocking for so long. If there are, then I will not turn off my ad-blocker

Pre roll in general but the teva ad really fucked with my pos dell laptop. A lot of the time i have to f5 a bunch. I now run ad block due to that and when im not on my own computer or phone they dont have ad block and will click on the landyatchz ad every time.

Its not about guilt, its about education on what its doing. Yes your individual ads make a difference, and that difference is by no means unsubstantial.

Those go in waves depending on how many video views we've got, and how many ads are sold. So it will usually only be a week or two where they're in front of every video.

However, those ads are where our video producers make by far the most money for their content. So watching those ads really supports the producers.

That logic is pretty fucking weak in my opinion. I have no issues with you not wanting to see ads & making the decision to keep running adblock... But the mentality that your one drop doesn't matter is bullshit.

Newschoolers is a community which is made up entirely of tiny drops, and believe it or not, we care about every single one of them.

FYI, neither Doug or I are mods. We're staff, and we're trying to make Newschoolers the best site possible.

Yes, Evan and Jamie are mods -- but guess what? They are also content creators who get paid for creating quality images/videos and uploading them to Newschoolers.

They are most likely pissed because you're stealing their potential earnings. I'm sure you would be as well.

Yes -- but only to a certain extent. At some point people grow up and need to pay the bills.

Another important note to make is that you don't want to just see content -- you want to see quality content, right? That costs money to produce.

I'll see if someone from the Hood Crew can chime in and give their two cents on the situation...

Here is my biggest issue with a subscription model.

Most skiers are broke. We do not fall into the same demographic as the average NYtimes reader. Not everyone is poor, but a lot of us are, and i would say when every dollar matters to me, im not going to want to spend extra to see ski content. A subscription would probably mean most users that used the premium section would be more mature, both in age and content. Which would be good, except one of the classic joys of newschoolers is the immaturity. A subscription would change the demographics, and not in a good way for the sight. You could probably make just as much cash, but you would be alienating a large percentage of your users you have now.

Why not just offer a subscription to get rid of ads, or block the site from adblock users? But a whole premium section wouldn't bode well for the average user.

I get the broke arguement. But 10$ or whatever is like one 6pack less on the weekend, buying a dimebag rather than a dub, making coffee/breakfast at home when you go skiing rather than buying it. If the incentive was great enough to subscribe, then you'd find a way, and if it wasn't then that's fine too.

Clownschool, New Intel, Roundtop Riders all made quality content for free. They (intelligently) used their free movies to get their names, and brand out there, and then took their talents to real, established jobs (Wallisch-Duh, Evan Williams-Nordica ect). Same thing with Stept now, they supplement their skiing with a production company.

I can't say that I've enjoyed EHV's new films over his old, non-subsidized ones, and I don't know if skiing is big enough to self support entire groups of kids just going out and making content for one another... Growing up and paying the bills means finding a niche where your talents will be fairly compensated for. Frankly I don't think that soley ski media is a big enough place for this to happen.

That's exactly what I've been doing. I really only hop on here to watch an edit or two now and again.

This is why I'm telling the admins to win me back as a user. The layout and content on NS is great, but the users are insufferable.

I can't say that I've really made a ton of money from just making videos with my friends, my money has come from working with companies and doing series' for newschoolers. Being part of the producer program is nice, but its not like getting money for views pays the bills, I don't take it that seriously, I just go out and make videos with my friends. I find satifaction from the videos I make, not the money involved.

Does it suck people adblock videos? ya because you're basically giving video producers/photographers/writers the finger. Does watching a 15 sec ad really make your life that much harder? Does having a banner ad really ruin your entire internet experience? You guys are fucking babies.

And yeah, clownschool/nig/roundtop was when we were all younger, the latter two were mostly in highschool, of course we didnt care about making money.

Exactly my point, you're passionate about skiing so you produce content for it. You did it before you were paid, and continue to do so even though the pay is not what you'd like.

There is no 'massive declines in the quality of [ski videos]' -to paraphrase bishop-, like there is in other places because the content is produced out of self-satisfaction. If newschoolers decided to scrap the producer program, you'd still make videos.

I'm arguing that there's a better way to compensate you then by forcing users to view ads, which then pays a company, which then eventually trickle down to you. Have NS offer a premium section in which you put up behind the scenes footage, extended cuts, interviews, (IDK, you're a creative guy) and have people choose to pay you based directly on the quality of your media rather than relying on their willingness to look at ads.

Hell, if you were really smart, you could offer it outside of the confines of NS and cut them out entirely. You are in a unique position within skiing right now -you're literally in the middle of everything cool that's happening, and surrounded by the most interesting people.- That's worth a lot more than you think...

you are in the vast minority who want more active mods. NS has always been more immature than other ski forums/sites, and i would say most people want it to stay that way. I would rather deal with a few complete idiots and still be part of enjoyable debates and rants than deal with no idiots, but have no drama at all.

Ad revenue drives the internet, no way you're going to make enough money from kids subscribing to premium content. If you think more than 1000 people would do it, you're delusional.

People don't WANT to pay for content, why would someone pay to watch my videos if they could watch someone elses for free? Your logic is flawed here. Even if it was a subscription to "premium" content, say 10k people do it for $2 a month (or whatever) $20k cut that in half (NS has to make a cut) then split that between creators (no doubt you'd need at like 5-10 good producers to make it appealing) then in the end each person gets what $1k? I dunno if that sounds like a lot to you, but that isn't that much money, not enough to dedicate your whole month producing videos, its similar to what the rev share program is now.

I'm not sure where you think ad's are such an awful thing, watching a 15 sec add for a 3-5 minute edit is a good deal. You literally pay $0 for that content, how is NS suppose to make a profit without ads? When you watch TV, you're "forced" to watch 8-9mins of ads for every 30mins of programing. Im not sure if you watch tv or not, but thats a lot of ads. NS ad ratio is 1min of ads for 20 mins of content, tv is 8 mins of ads for 20 mins of content AND YOU PAY FOR TV MONTHLY STILL. You seriously are going to bitch you have to spend 15 secs watching an ad for FREE CONTENT?

Jesus christ dude, how are you so fucking demanding? You have no "right" to watch any of this content. Go surf youtube or vimeo, have fun finding all the best new content. NS is a distributor of content, the best shit is always on here and very easy to access and you're complaining? How can you be so ignorant about the cost to run a business and a website? EVERY WEBSITE ON THE INTERNET makes money from ads. How do you make money otherwise? Think about all the websites you visit every day. How do those websites make money? 99.9999% make money from ads, period.

Your second paragraph here also has flawed logic, do you know how hard it is just to go out and get budget to make videos? Again, ski movies are powered by advertising. Its so ignorant for you to say "there is a better way to compensate you then by forcing users to view ads" WHAT DO YOU THINK A FUCKING SKI MOVIE IS? its a huge ad for the companies the riders are contracted by, come the fuck on dude.

You're again delusional if you think I could just split from NS and make the same money I do now, without advertising and without support from NS. How do you sell a video to a company? View. How do you get views? newschoolers.com or your name is tom wallisch. Unless you have a very unique situation, without the support of a website (NS, freeskier, espn) its nearly impossible to make any money on the internet.

You are out of your element, you literally have NO IDEA what you're talking about. Not only are you wrong but you're logic is extremely flawed.

Your first point isn't true at all. The problem is that these groups could have grown and flourished were they to have been compensated and funded for their work. Sure there is always a new person to step in, but does that new person fill the quality and experience of the old? Not necessarily. Sure people go to get jobs and form other projects, but I theorize that if we start to actually have proper revenue flow into the hands of these groups - we'll see some more longevity of the stuff we love.

Self satisfaction gets a good start, but it doesn't keep it going.

Evan, sure you don't care about the views that much - but the views are what got you the position making those videos for companies. It was taking part in the whole ecosystem that allowed your 5 questions with series to get funded, landed the Both Sides of the Lens series, got you hired for work at SIA, etc. Were you not to have gotten a little compensation for the views, perhaps you would have given up / gotten a job / something before we managed to land the other stuff.

As for the subscription being something that can trickle down CMYK - that is correct and exactly how we would handle this. Either subscription would pay a share based on ad-free views, or there would be premium content available that would be behind that paywall. Either way, the producers of the content would make revenue.

As for offering things outside the confines of Newschoolers... I think this is an unwise idea. If we all work together, we can be a much larger force. Sure that larger force requires more money to keep moving, but it also is much more able to get drastically larger sums of money flowing through it. Scale is always easier to monetize, as long as the greed doesn't set in too hard. This is why we've been so dedicated to making sure that Newschoolers shifts direction away from being a media source itself, and only focuses on being a content monetization and distribution platform where producers such as Evan can have the tools they need to make money.

In the end its going to be a balance. The people who don't want to pay will watch ads. The people who do, won't. If we have a premium section that is pay-only it will have a higher echelon of content. You can already experience this as a donator where we have forums locked away to donators.

As for you wishing a higher quality Newschoolers - newschoolers is made up of its people. You should try to start and facilitate really good discussion in the direction you want it to go vs. waiting for an admin to beg you to stay here. Your tone is super negative, which is likely why you experience negativity. NS has hate for sure, but TGR is way worse and if you think the internet (and humanity as a whole) doesn't have hate then you're going to have a bad time everywhere. Your experience is what you make it, and the more people that contribute positively the more it will spread.

I also highly recommend not visiting newschoolers in the summer if you don't like hate. Skiers are angry when there is no snow. Mid winter things are much better.

I really can't believe people are moaning about supporting the site by letting 2 banners be visible, They are so un intrusive

I do wish they were more ski specific. But as stated summer months are stale.

I do hope NS does not go down the subscription root.

First of all, I may be taking my personal views to a bit of an extreme here, but that's because I think this is a conversation worth having.

Perhaps the $$$ doesn't work out. I have no working knowledge of your industry. It's exactly what I argued to Mousseau above, that "I don't think that solely ski media is a big enough place for [making a living] to happen." It simply seems, from an outsiders perspective, that there's a better way to maximize the $$ that you see. I could be wrong.

That being said, I actually don't watch TV. Too many Ads. If I do its via Netflix (by way of paying for a premium service) with no ads, or with a DVR (paying for a premium service) so I can fast forward through ads. You see, I've gotten very used to this lifestyle where I don't have to see any obnoxious ads that I don't want to.

I'm not naive enough to believe that ads are ever going to go away. My hope is just that they start to actually provide a service for a user or at least aren't obtrusive or detract from the content. Sponsored content, product placement, innovative ad campaigns, these things are all awesome. Neon banners, half naked trailer trash chicks, and 15 second ads for 30 second videos aren't.

I agree with your statement and reasoning around staying in NS, I was just playing a bit of devil's advocate. But Evan is currently in a unique position in the industry, and if NS was ineffective for his needs, I still believe that he would be able to make it on his own.

The balance point- spot on. That's all I really want- please give me something on my side of the argument- something worth paying for (lets be honest though, Donator's forum is pretty lame compared to what it could be. A great possible place to start!)

Finally, this HAS been my attempt to facilitate really good discussion. I appreciate that you, Mousseau, and Evan are willing to discuss this, but unfortunately, nobody else has. I don't think that my tone has been more negative than anyone else's, but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and say that I'm sorry for any negativity I've brought. I'm simply trying to have a discussion about the future of internet advertizing, something that I think is extremely interesting, and extremely relevant. The "summer effect" is well known (hell, I've probably propagated it at one point or another) but even in the winter I feel that NS falls short of what it could be. Negativity only happens as you allow or tolerate it.

At the end of the day, it comes down to this- Let me know when NS premium happens, and if what's offered is worth the $, I'll be your biggest proponent. Until then, I'll continue to use NS as I have been lately, namely to view a video or two (with adblock on), then leave.

I'm going to not answer the rest of your points because frankly I think we're on the same page.

This one is a big one for me though, as I actually do believe you're incorrect.

STEPT is more than the athletes in their movies - it is the philosophies and vision of its founding members that help shape and guide what they do. This can carry on well past the physical or even interest limitations of the founder. Perfect example, Poorboyz Productions. Johnny D. does very little of the actual production of the ski film anymore, but we still have something that is based on the part of the market that Poorboyz satisfied.

Why? Because Johnny D. made enough money to build a legitimate business. PBP has been around for almost two decades and has seen many athletes come and go through their lineup. Love it or hate it, PBP puts out a product you can rely on time and time again.

Freeze Magazine, Siver Cartel, Axis Magazine, Ski Time, Wind-up Films, SAS Films, Voleurz... there are tonnes of incredibly rad things that have gone away without proper financial success. Those are the big ones - for every Stept there is 50 other crews that are totally unreal but never get the support they need to keep going. Athletes are constantly quitting and joining the real world without enough money.

Money changes your decisions dramatically. Things last if people support them financially, however their business model runs. When those things go away, something new pops up, but it doesn't always fill the hole that was left... Freeskier to Freeze is a perfect example. Everyone loved Freeze, but not enough people bought it at newsstands or subscribed to ensure it kept going within its corporate mandate.

The key here is that we're trying to break this model. Right now only a tiny sliver of people at the top are able to make all the money available. Don't think it isn't there either - there is immense advertising revenue locked up in the traditional businesses. Mags and Movies are still killing it, though a lot of dollars are beginning to move online.

Currently our content monetization model is in total infancy, but is growing by the second. Evan did OK for himself this year. The Hood Crew definitely made some bucks. Inspired Media made a solid slice of revenue from us - and all of this just came from advertising. None of them have had to look out to more corporate gigs simply because we're able to start the money trickling in and allow them to be whoever they want to be.

The advertising ecosystem is an incredible beast. There is massive quantities of money in it, and as we go foward, there is going to be tonnes of opportunities for those people/crews who want to get their business to the next level to make dollars out of us and kep on keeping on.

What does the future hold? Who knows? Part of trying to re-write the rules of the game is not knowing exactly how its all going to turn out.

NS deserves the respect of the community here. It is literally a 15-30 second edit that not only makes it possible for the staff to eat but for them to help make this website a better place. I mean in the last 5 years this website has improved tenfold, and with that improvement has come a huge increase in advertisements, coincidence? I think not, more money in their pocket allows the staff more freedom in building and creating the website as well as offer incentive to up and coming film makers and groups. The monetary incentive that they offer film crews and filmers really helps to make the content on this website that much better as well as produce more of it. When it comes to NSTV how rad would it be to one day flick on NS and have 5 to 10 premium edits/webisodes being released a day? If NS was able to keep gaining more support from advertisers and pump some of that money back into the community this would be totally possible. In our case this year NS was the only "budget" we had, we probably netted around 700 dollars this whole season which allows us to do so much, put it towards a winch whatever, this was probably one of the coolest things we have ever recieved as a crew and it is going to help us really make our footage way more bangin next year, so THANKS NEWSCHOOLERS, we understand that this is a direct result of Advertising money and we appreciate your support, we and I'm sure every other producer on NS would really appreciate you turning off Ad block as it makes many of our lives just that much better :)

Didn't read all 4 pages of this thread, so I don't know if it's been brought up. But, I did donate to continue using adblock, although I do turn it off most of the time, the only time I turn it back on is when I'm watching videos, I hate pre-roll ads on videos (I understand they are probably the most lucrative ads though). If there was a premium subscription that just disabled pre-roll ads on videos I'd be all over it, I don't care about banners they don't bother me at all, but watching the same couple ads before watching a video is super annoying to me.
