How To Tune Skis. 8 Part Series. Very Comprehensive.

I am posting this for those who really want good info on how to do a proper tune.  The series is long, but if you really want to get the most from a pair of skis, the tune is critical. 

If you want to learn, you need to watch all 8 parts in their entirety.  If you skip any at all, you will not learn anything.  A good amount of what you will learn is in the talking.  You will need to listen well. 

Please don't even bother to leave a comment until you have spent the time to watch and LISTEN to all 8 videos.

Any comments or questions should be asked on the YouTube as I will then get a notice and be able to answer in a timely fashion.

Thanks for posting this Jacques. Anybody can take their skis to a shop and pay $60 for a kid to run their ski through a Wintersteiger machine, but being able to do a good hand tune is a valuable skill for any ski bum.

Whoa whoa....this is for a NEW ski, tuning for NEW skis is different than NON-NEW skis. Keep this i mind.

Probably a lot of the techniques can be transferred over though.

Tuning a used ski can be much harder as the edges will or can become work hardened.  When that is the case, one must work over the edges with a course diamond stone first.  If not, no matter how sharp the file is, it will not cut.  Another option is to use silicon carbide sand paper backed up to a file to break through the hardened edges.  Also a used ski may be really railed.  Then one needs to base bevel well into the plastic base.  Then use a sharp metal scraper to shave the base back down to the edges.  With a sintered old dry base, this shaving of the base will "renew" it just like a grind.  Now wax will be able to penatrate the base once again.  Bla bla bla.   Thanks for that comment.

Yes it is me.  the one and only onesie guy from Bachelor.  Same as the guy who videos all takers in park at Bachelor on any given day.  I think many people who want to progress don't know how important a true tune is to their progressing.  Park or pure carving, it really important.  I NEVER detune any part of a modern ski.  Many tips and tails are already tapered, so never detune.  As for park rails and boxes the 2 degree base bevel will work really good for not catching.  Nothing will stop rail bang, but that is mostly the under foot part that gets hammered.  The tips and tails can still have a good edge, thus providing some bite to make a carve.  The best can carve into a jump.   Bla bla bla.

Thanks Champ.  Tools will cost you some money.  Files and stones don't last forever etc. 

The money you spend will be worth every penny in time, so if you plan to ski for years, it's the best investment you will ever purchase.  Not to dis anyone who runs a machine, but the fact is a machine can DESTROY a ski so bad, the it will never be worth a darn again.  I've seen it many times.  Many times I have spent hours to re-true a ski that has been throug a machine.

The "other" reason I posted this thread is because I did not find any tuning stuff here.  (Maybe I'm lame)  I still say it will help all those who might need it.

Okay, I know the tuning series of videos is really long, but you can't learn from a two minute video like you can from these videos.  Again one needs to watch and listen to all 8 parts to learn how I do it.

It's that time again for the northern hemisphere. If you want to learn how to tune your own stuff here I'll show you how. Bump because it's important. Base bevel may be the most important factor for a rail, tube, box rider etc. See that on part 5.
