My Dad's Bittersweet Business Opportunity.

DISCLAIMER: I am I 15 year old kid, I am a sophomore in high school. I would not call myself a spoiled bitchbrat, and my parents don't give me everything I want on a silver platter. LOLOLOL HE'S A FIFTEEN YEAR OLD KID HAHAHAHHA. Okay. Now it's out of your system.

Here we go. My dad was laid off from his position as an executive for a large pharmaceutical company due to budget cuts, and he was left with a year with pay to find a job. That time is running out, and he is most likely getting an offer to be the CEO of a developing pharmaceutical company. Awesome, right? But here's the kicker: It is located in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. FLORIDA. Of all places. My mom will not spend summers in florida, as it is much too hot for her. But mother preferences aside, I am a high elevation, winter/mountain kind of guy. I ski and longboard in my free time, and without those things, I don't have anything to do. I understand that I could learn to surf etc. But along with 90% of this site, I would be left with a hollowness without skiing. Not to mention my summer equivalent being longboarding (freeride/downhill, requiring hills), and Florida being as flat as my first girlfriend's chest.

I know some of you will say things like "Wow man you're so dramatic, skiing and skating aren't even important" To me, those things are all I have to get away from the stress in my life, and to genuinely have a good time. Call me over dramatic but it's true.
I have talked about this extensively with my parents, and I have been given 3 options.

Option 1: My dad moves to florida, we buy a cheaper house in Maine (where I am now), my mom lives in florida and summers in Maine, and I go to boarding school in Maine or somewhere else in New England. For me, this is the most attractive option, as my options for schools include some great schools near big ski mountains and such. The tradeoff would be significantly less time with my family.

Option 2: Everyone moves to florida. I will have to sacrifice skiing and skating but will have more time with my family. I would like to avoid this as much as possible as I believe I would be very unhappy living in florida. I would spend a lot more time with my family though.

Option 3: My mom and I stay in Maine and my dad lives in florida and visits us for about 60 days every year. My dad would greatly lose touch with us, and that would suck since we're really close now. It would be less complicated but it would kind of separate him from us. My mom would also be greatly burdened as I have a 4 year old brother and me, and she would pretty much be a single mom.

So I guess I made this thread to get help with my decision, to get an outside opinion. I know I'm not the only variable here. My mom doesn't want to summer in florida due to the heat, and my dad will obviously want us to be as close as possible. I just want a decision that will be the best for everyone. Thanks for any input guys.

TL;DR
MY dad might become CEO of a company in florida, I don't want to go to florida. I could go to boarding school while my family moves to florida, or stay in Maine but leave my Mom to take care of my 4 year old brother and me alone, or move to florida and leave all that I have learned to love to do.

Dude florida isn't that bad if thats what it comes to. Take up wakeboarding at the cable parks. They are mega fun.

Move to florida. Theres windsurfing, wakeboarding, surfing , kiteboarding, boating. Your mom sounds like a huge cunt complaining about the heat. Ever heard of air con? And florida isnt even that hot. What a whore

Move to Florida, family is the most important thing in this world. I love skiing, but family always comes first and if it were me I would move without a doubt. Get a job and spend a week or two at COC, Momentum or Windells over the summer to beat the heat and ski. Also, you'll more than likely be the smartest kid in your school down there... No brainer, move to Florida

Option 1 and 3 are gonna split up your family dude. It's a bitter pill to swallow but I'd say option 2 is your best bet. Try taking up boarding,wakeboarding, surfing, fruitbooting, bmx, ect. Vibes

First one seems to be your best option, good luck in choosing.

My suggestion though would be to move to Florida and be with your family as you finish highschool then you can move out west or wherever for college. I think that would probably help also in keeping you focused on school. I've found that kids that don't have their parents keeping tabs on them just have to much freedom on their hands and let school fall to the wayside.

Thats a hard one, this stuff makes me thankful my dad owns a business that cant move. Vibes man. I would say staying full time is what I would do. Its not like your dads going to become a stranger. There is skype and all sorts of internet options to stay in touch, and he will be home 60 days a year. if thats not possible I would do the boarding school. Another option is living full time and your dad coming those days a year, but also you could take vacations to florida and see him more?

Disclaimer, my dad too lost his job recently and had previously been employed for over 30 years. He recently applied for welfare and only has a few months to sell his house that is priced way too high and yet at the minimum amount so that he can even sell it and come out even.

I read your thread, really its touching but your needs to ski or so low on the totem pole its sad. At least your father has a job and can continue to support his family. Everything else is just fucking trivial. Maybe you should sacrifice a little considering that you parents can still afford two houses even with your dad being relocated. My dad lived in Connecticut for two years and only visited me and my family on the weekends so he could work a job he hated to support his family. So I was in the same exact position as your "option 2".

Fact is, you have it easy, the hardest decision in your life is whether to give up skiing or not. Im not trying to be a dick but maybe give you a little perspective. I'm sure your parents have sacrificed plenty for you, maybe, even at 15, you could do the same if it made life a little easier for them. Whether you choose option 1 or 3 you are gonna have it A LOT easier than most kids out there, stop acting like this is the hardest decision of your life because it wont be hopefully.

Once again, not trying to be a dick just hoping you can be at least thankful your father has a job and is able to support the lifestyle your family clearly lives...

If I were you I'd defiantly go with option #1 great schools near skiing and you would meet a bunch of cool people and since they are all going to be very well off it means connections for jobs later in life and being able to hang with them in many awesome places; Bermuda, Hampton's and yacht rides. You will also get a good education and being away from your family will be fun.

well it depends where you live in maine, If you live in falmouth or cape or scarborough or somthing, stay but if you're in machias or somthing, get the fuck out, florida would be way better

I'm in Camden. It's a great place and I love the school and town, but option 3 (Staying) is probably the least likely to happen at this point

This sounds a lot like my life. My family moved a bunch. Most of my time was growing up was in Snowshoe, West Virginia. My dad was the architect that designed all of the original buildings at the ski area. We lived up there when power and water were definitely not things you could count on and we spent one summer getting our water supply from a snowmaking hydrant on cup run, and my mom had to raid the freezers at the restaurant because the resort went bankrupt several times and they could pay my dad. Still, I loved being there.

West Virginia was like going back in time. I had no idea what racism was or what a homosexual was. We moved to Miami, Florida and I got a crash course. Miami was having tons of race riots at that time and a kid in my Junior High School decided he had a crush on me. My mom loved Miami, but I would have either killed this kid or myself if we hadn't have moved. I admit that I actually begged my parents to move anywhere else. My dad got offers from a firm in Oklahoma City and one in Vail, Co. I think my dad realized how miserable I was because he took the job in Vail and the rest is history. Sometimes I wonder if he, I or someone else in our family might have been in the Federal Building when Tim McVeigh's bomb went off.

Anyway, I feel for you OP. Hope you can figure out a way to stay where they actually have seasons.

Option 2 because it's the one that scares you the most.

You're focusing too much on what you'll leave behind in maine. Don't do that.

Besides, I think it's good to not get your way every once in awhile and learn to adapt to situations that you don't think are ideal at first. It's called life.

He had his own architectural firm, but he is pretty much retired now. He does a little consulting work, and he recently designed the H.A.A.T.S facility near eagle. http://co.ng.mil/arng/haats/default.aspx My dad is a stud.

Again. Definitely move to florida. There is so much to do there and you will be together as a family and the money you save by not getting another house and not going to boarding school you can spend on a bigger danker house in florida and on trips to colorado and utah and maybe even buy a condo out there. Think about it

it sounds like your family is going to (has already been) making a decent amount of money, your mom can rent a place for the summer if she truly cannot handle it, or stay with relatives for the 3 months you guys are not in school.

1 is an ok option in my mind

2 is the clear winner, as mentioned above, find a 3 month rental for june july august somewhere else

3 is bad news any way you slice it

Why don't you give Florida a shot for the summer? Get a feel for the area and see what the people are like. If it really blows, then go with option 1.

In one sense, do what you have to do to survive. In another sense do what you have to do for your family. I don't think me and my dad had the greatest relationship growing up, he wasn't around a lot. Then I could drive and we found something we both loved and I can honestly say I wouldn't trade him for anyone on the earth, he's a straight boss. Then I went to college and realized I'm going to need to get job in the near future and realized just how much I want to be exactly like my dad. It's in your hands man, and as everyone else has said weigh your options, do what you think is best for everyone, and don't have any regrets man.

I'd probably just go to Florida. Surfing is a great sport, possibly more fun than skiing, and you should be able to find some new hobbies fairly easily. I'm sure if your dad is getting a solid CEO position then you should be able to take some amazing ski vacations every once in a while.

Option 1 for sure. you will still see your parents and if you can go to a really prestigious boarding school it could set you up to get into an ivy league school. Best choice.

Being able to go to a boarding school would be pretty nice, but you need to know if you could handle it.
Plus you only have a little time with your family left until you go to college, so maybe just try to pick up something other than skiing and just live with them in Florida. Take some trips to out West and in winter vacation or something maybe head back up to Maine? I'd say #2 just because family is precious

Let me start by saying you sound more well spoken and honest than most of the 15 year olds on this site. Props.

Now, I would go with option 2. Yeah, Florida would be kind of beat to live in year round. But you gotta think of family first like other people have been saying.

The other thing man is that before you know it, you'll be looking at colleges. It may not seem like it now. But you'll blink and then you'll be in college. Blink again, and you'll be out. Time moves fast. And you could attend college practically anywhere you want from the way it sounds (obviously depending on where you get in, though.)

Yeah, there's no skiing in Florida. But you can do a lot of other sports. Sounds like your family has money for a couple ski trips out west every year, and maybe Windells or COC in the summer too. Hell, you could end up doing more skiing than some of the kids on this site.

And on the bright side, I think a lot of people would love to move to Florida. This site would be the last place you'd find those people, but they're out there.

Dude you're 15 years old. trust me you're not stressing out yet. get a real job where you work 12 hours a day 5 days a week then talk about stress

Stay with your family!

I go to school in Halifax and the rest of my family is spread over ontario and quebec. I have 2 brothers and a sister, same age. We all used to live together as we are family but then I moved out to halifax and they spread across quebec and ontario for post secondary education. Even though we have the funds and desire to travel the distance split us up. (My sister flew out to see me and my brothers and friends drove out at a different time).
We are all back together for the summer but, it just kinda sucked being away from them and my parents.
Live with your family and give up skiing for a bit. You can go on skiing trips if you like. Hell, maybe you'll enjoy surfing more then skiing. Your life will change; skiing shouldn't dictate where you live.

Congrats man, you're in the real world. Doesn't mean that he doesn't feel stressed. Just like if you get pissed if you break your phone. You're still pissed even though their are people who are starving who wouldn't be as pissed. Everyone has their own issues. Who are you too say this isn't a hard choice? Hmm
