Ahhh, but you see science has been proven wrong even more times, because most of the time when we think we know something, we later discover that its wrong. At one point in human history we thought there were 4 elements and the extent of math was the pythagorean theorem. People thought you could describe the universe using only whole numbers. I'd say that was pretty far off the mark, and yet all this came from some of the greatest minds in history.
Also, consider that the "omnipotent man in the sky" god is an atheist god, created by atheists to support their atheist viewpoints. Ask most religious people what they think god is, and chances are they won't say that there's a big man up there watching their every action so he can make them burn in a fiery pit after they die. Or, at least, the intelligent ones won't say that.
Think, for a second, about this: science is an inherently materialistic perspective. "Materialism" meaning that reality is grounded in matter, and is completely composed of matter. But what this does not explain is subjective experience; a scientific perspective may explain how you see the colour red, but it can't explain how you experience the colour red. Its the subjective, the subtle, the inexplicable and the immaterialist that is investigated through religion and spirituality.
