(another) What camera should I get thread.

Hi all,

I am struggling to make a decision on a new camera.

I had a T1i, but gave it to my brother a few weeks ago. I shot with it for three years, have shot film cameras, and a variety of other cameras so I am confident with the workings of most camera types.

-I don't have a ton of cash (budget= $1000 for now), but really want to get something before I go abroad next semester (to Europe).

-I shoot photos and video 50/50, but will primarily shoot photos next semester.

-I am not heavily invested in any brand.

I am trying to decide between something in the rebel series (likely a T3i), a 60d, or something like the Fujifilm x20/x100. (or anything else you can suggest)

So would it be worth it for me to get, say, an x20 that I would use for traveling and then sell for a DSLR upgrade, or should I just buy a 60d and one walk around lens to start a kit to build on when I get back.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Just get a nice compact P&S like a X20/RX100 somewhere in the 500-600$ range. Unless you want to shoot sports I don't see any reason to get a DSLR. Honestly, I think they're on their way out. If you want something with a fixed focal length, get the new GR or just buy a film P&S you can throw in your bag everywhere you go (Olympus Trip/Stylus Epic/XA series).

^I will probably end up with a P&S for now, but what about video? I'd mostly be shooting from a tripod, doing short narrative based films for some film classes. Could a P&S pull off that and a little bit of ski filming for fun?

I think a t3i or 60d makes very little sense at this point, unless you are heavily invested in Canon glass. The sensors are outdated and even outperformed by micro four thirds cameras.

A Nikon D3200 or D5200 with 35mm f/1.8 prime could be an elegant solution, not too large, excellent photo and video.

Micro four thirds could provide a compromise between compact size and DSLR-style quality. There's a ton of great deals out there with cameras costing around $250. Combined with a 20mm f/1.7 prime it's a good travel set up, with a ton of lens options for the future, and great video.

If you go compact I'd go Sony RX100 for a zoom, or Fuji X100 for a fixed lens camera. Those are awesome cameras. I'd personally chose the RX100 because it's so small, such a good body design, and the zoom lens is more flexible.

Nowadays? Yes, they can. If you're not going to use a glidecam, just smack that baby on a tripod and go. Just look at some test video's of the RX100; it's on par with most bigger camera's.
