Skiing with an enlarged spleen?

So here's the deal. I got mono back in early october and when it finally looked like I kicked it about 3 weeks ago the doctor told me I should still avoid contact sports which included skiing. This is because mono makes the spleen and liver swell to cope with the virus/infection which makes them suscetible to rupturing which means surgery/possible death. Yet it's been over 6 weeks now since I've had it and I see no further complications when my ski season starts on Dec. 4th. Has anyone else out there skied after dealing with mono in the near past?

Go see the doctor again, or another doctor. See what they think now.

A ruptured spleen or liver lac would really suck (read, could kill you dead).

Suggest body armor to the doctor if they think there is still a problem as see what they think of that.

dude, crazy! For a second there i had to check ur profile to see if u were my buddy. He's got mono right now, enlarged spleen and all that, but may be getting over it now or a little later. i'm sorry to hear u had it bro, this dude of ours feels soo crappy. the burton longshot has a spine and kidney protectors if u need it there too. good luck with the docs.

ive gotthe same problem right now. i have mono and the doctor said to come back december 11th so he can see if skiing will be a good idea. i have no symptoms of mono anymore, i just dont want to kill my self doing something stupid

I had mono once, last summer. Shouldnt be a problem, your spleen wont burst, and youre liver wont either, unless youre an alcoholic, in which case the fatty deposits on your liver might account for some of that. However, id take it easy. Stay away from tricks, rails whatever might have a chance in getting you hurt...

be careful bro...i had a buddy who ruptured his spleen last season during a fall on a rail. he nearly died and had to be flight-for-lifed down to denver from vail

Be careful and go see your doctor. I played lacrosse with mono, and hardly even took a hit but sitll ruptured it. It hurt like a bitch, and I was in the hospital for a week.

ya. my friend had mono. she still skied. she was gay to ski with tho, 'cause she was being all careful. it'd get a second opion with a doctor.

yeah dude it would suck to not be able to ski the whole season just because you wanted to get out a few days early, get your self back up to 100% and then go out and rip it up, but dont risk it to early.

I had mono last year during regionals and state finals for ski racing and the doctor said not to ski but i was just careful and tried not to fall, so if your just super careful your probably alright

I had it and i'm havin no effect anymore; that was like... 3 years ago? Yeah, they told me to quit playin soccer and i didn't really listen. I don't think i had it bad though cause i didn't really have any effects even then. Just tired. My dad thought i was fakin at first to skip school. ha ha, gotta love test results. but when it comes down to it, i wouldn't risk it either; u take one fall and u could be done. That worth it?
