Do you see ads on websites? If so, you don't have AdBlock. If you don't, you do not have AdBlock. I mean, it's pretty complicated, so consider revising the previous sentences.

If there was a newschoolers app for iPhone I'd pay 5 bucks for it, sure many others would too. If the site relies on adverts or donations to survive (which is unreliable income) but it is running like a business, then attempts to generate revenue other ways just makes sense. Can you register it as a business and list it publicly?

So the solution to this isn’t to tell people that they can’t use adblock.

If people hate ads, but don’t use adblock, they’re going to get pretty pissed off the site and lower their usage, lowering the income for NS itself.

The problem is that a lot of the banner space uses Google Adsense, so is open to any advertiser that uses the display network to advertise. Hence why you get stupid spammy ads about weight loss etc.

I’m sure people wouldn’t mind so much if it was interesting and RELEVANT ads from Red Bull, or Windells etc.

Solution? Lock down ad space to run-of-site only, that way NS can approve/disapprove advertisers and their adverts. Because we’re all logged in, NS can use cookies to capture the ridiculous amount of data we will be creating about ourselves (viewing certain product reviews etc) and then, if agreed by users, make it open to companies to target users based on this.

Relevance is the key successful advertising.

Another option for revenue is to open the site up to sponsored content. I’m not sure if companies pay for their video/profiles etc.. but sponsored news stories and the like would be a much more effective way for them to advertise and get people engaged.

Pretty sure you’re more likely to get eaten by a shark than click a banner ad...

Just my 2 cents.

sick of living in a world of advertisements. you can't watch anything, do anything, or go anywhere without trying to be sold something. even your health is just a business. you go to a doctor's office and what does he do, writes you a prescription for some pills that don't work so he can keep his patient volume high, earning him more income while not having to really assess anything or use his fucking brain. anything you do there's people just trying to get the most out of you with the least amount of time and effort put in.

it's fucking sad if you think about it.

but yeah, back on track here, i don't need to be shown chicks in bikinis on the side of my page to encourage me to buy something. if i want hot girls, i'll go watch porn. if i want to buy something, i'll do it on my terms. strategically placing ads in areas where people commonly misclick so that you accidentally open the page is kind of a petty and sneaky thing to do and i don't like it.

if you want to have a big advertisement on the front page, or have some ads that people can check out in a specific section, fine. but jumping in your face all the time, everywhere you go....... fuck that. adblocked.

I use adblock for almost every site, but NS. I wish I could just in the video section though because those are the only ones that really bother me as long as the ads stay in their designated areas and dont come out onto the page.

I agree that having ads everywhere is annoying, but it is either ads or membership fees. If there arnt either of those most people wont bother creating new content for their website since they arn't getting anything out of it.

I think this is very wrong.

if they have 25 million page views, and 2 ads per page, that would be 50 million times the ads are loaded.

the ads probably generate about $10/thousand views.

that's $500,000 over the course of a year.


so say 80k of that is lost, so 420k is made in a year. then that means 16% of people use adblock on the site.

which makes sense. overall about 10% of internet users have adblock.


so if NS has 200,000 members, 16% is 32,000.


if you're on NS and using adblock then you're part of the 32,000 who share the loss of the 80,000.



so each person who uses adblock looses the site $2.50/year. averaged over everyone who uses adblock.




so donating $50 means you should be covering your base for 20 years. which kinda makes sense, considering if everyone donated $50 then that would be over 10 million dollars.

assuming the number of page visits is correct and the ad revenue is approximately correct, then 16% of people on NS use adblock.

Because it usually doesn't matter. No one cares if youtube or hulu loses some revenue, so no one has taken the time and effort to make a "fake" adblock.

People have this notion in their heads that NS is 'losing out' on cash if people use adblock, like NS was entitled to it in the first place.

Imagine you are paid to advertise for a company in your shop window, but then some guy invents sunglasses which block adverts. They are available for free and about half of people in the street use them. Now the advertisers get angry and start paying you half as much for the adverts. You are obviously upset about this, but you don't run out into the street yelling at everyone who is wearing glasses calling them fucking pathetic and blame them for costing you money. That actually makes you look like a pathetic whiny bitch who shouldn't have relied on shoving shit in people's faces for money.

This is just the world we live in, get mad, let your jimmies rustle silently, be a badass and call Adblock a dick behind his back if you want. But the real reason you're getting your panties in a bunch is because its not as easy to make money as you thought and now you need to do something different.

NS should be more selective with their ad space. I understand that it's probably hard to find that many ski companies that would want to advertise on here that would generate close to the same amount of revenue, but I actually bought a pair of Bloom pants on sale because of the ads. but Vapeworld and Jumpsport.com aren't getting any more business because of their ads.

haha what! you have no idea what your talking about. If NS is generating any where close to $80,000 per 100 users per year then NS have a ridiculous CPM (cost per 1000 impressions). A very, very good CPM is typically between 10-15$ per 1000 impressions and even if NS was able to get a CPM that good, they wouldn't be generating anywhere close to 80,000$ a year on 100 users).

If that was the case then NS would be a generating close to a million dollars in ad revenue a year, at which point then I would say 80k isn't a huge deal anyways.

It's likely that they are using a CPC (cost per click) model for most their ads anyways (besides maybe the background buyouts?). So if you really want to support NS you need to be clicking on every ad that comes up.

I literally guess and i was definitely wrong, some guy did some math but I didn't agree with it cause he said every member only contributes like $3 a year which is not true at all.


numbers aside, why does everyone hate ads so much? Im very curious to why people throw such a fit about a small space on a web page, that you use for free.

I read this thread earlier and actually went to check my chrome preferences to see if I had adblock on or off. It was off and it's been off for every site I visit. There is no need to have adblock on NS, it's completely inconsequential. I don't get weird ads (probably because I don't save cookies or search weird botox, middle eastern dating sites, or whatever else)

NS always runs fine, I never have trouble with waiting for videos or pages to load. At the end of the day the ads actually do more good than they do harm for me. I have seen ads on here for ski companies and clothing companies and I'll actually click the ad.

I don't see why everyone is being little bitches about it. It sounds like simply turning it off could do a lot of good for the site. I'm all for people doing good things and getting paid for them. NS is a good thing and if the operators can make more money by everyone turning off ad block then by all means people should turn off ad block and give back to the site where they spend all of their fucking day on anyway.

I know how to do this for Safari, which means Chrome should be the same. It will only work with Newschoolers though, so if you want to use adblock, but allow ads on NS, but not actually display them, PM me and I can tell you how.

It's not fraudulent since it has nothing to do with NS and is entirely something you do with your own internet settings.

This will not speed things up though, the ad still downloads, you just don't see it.

Could easily write a browser extension for chrome and firefox to execute some simple jquery. I'm not going to take the time to do it tho. Ads aren't a huge deal, most of the ones are NS are at least relevant.
