Why do people find skiing without poles attractive?

I skied without poles once this year. To be honest I really didn't like it. So why do a lot of skiers prefer to do it?

and to somewhat relate my post to this thread, why the does anyone care what/how anyone else skis? So many of you have a stick up your ass so far you cant turn your head, the day society grows out of its highschool bullshit is the day I feel some faith has been restored in humanity......

Skiing is skiing whether you use poles or not. When I broke my poles I just fucked around the rest of the day and had a ton of fun. Makes learning new tricks and putting your own style into old ones a hell of a lot more fun too.

every time i fell with poles and straps on, i'd tweak my thumb hella hard.

so i lost the straps. cuz i figured, i didn't want pointy metal rods attached to me if i ever took a bad fall.

then i met a guy who stabbed himself in the gut with one of his poles when he overshot a jump.

so i lost the poles altogether. and really, besides for pow riding (when i do bust em out) i've never found a reason to go back to using them. you get used to skiing without them, unless its really slushy i'm fine skating everywhere, and grabs come a lot cleaner and more solid. only downside is when you get to the front of the liftline and have to do an idiotic little penguin shuffle to load

A lot of people do it after breaking/having their poles stolen when they dont feel like paying for new ones

There should be a poll on this. Judging by this thread, I'd expect it to be 80/20 no poles vs. poles.

i think one of the stupidest arguments is "I'm also a skateboarder and skiing without poles makes me feel like somehow merging both sports"

If you want to get a skateboard feel on the mountain, snowboard. just fucking snowboard then, for real.

I ski with poles most of the time, but honestly, it doesn't make that much sense. Poles were invented long before parabolic skis were invented. Back in the days of long, shapeless skis, the only way to make a turn was to either hop or to kind of swish your tails behind you; and so poles were invented to help initiate these types of turns. Now that our skis have sidecut, we don't need to pole plant in order to make a turn.

I agree that, even with sidecut, pole planting helps to keep you in a good body position to make proper turns, but you can certainly learn to stay in that position without the use of poles. The fact that most park skiers use poles that are less than waist height (including myself) is testament to my theory that they serve absolutely no purpose.

Poles are also used to a degree for balance. It kind of sounds like a weird concept but they absolutely help you balance. If you're unfamiliar with no pole skiing and you switch to it, at first it's a little unbalanced and strange.

This is slightly off topic, but I always wonder about the people riding with the park poles that are obviously way too short for them, is there any particular reasoning behind the short poles?

I find it easier to lift my partner without poles. One time I tried with poles and I impaled her through the nipple. She wound up so disfigured I had to abandon her on the mountain.

Also....triple sow cows are easier.

I'm not offended; I wouldn't consider myself any "tier" of pro skier, and I wouldn't expect that you know who I am.

I wasn't really proposing a theory as much as I was just pointing out some basic observations: poles used to serve a very important purpose - they don't serve that purpose anymore - maybe we don't need them at all anymore.

This is something I've thought about before, and so I thought I would contribute it to the conversation. No need to be a dingus about it ;)
