So I'm going to save enough money to buy one of these cars at the end of the summer. I've done a lot of research of my own, but what does NS think?

obviously the wrx is gonna be faster, it's probably more reliable, the extra room and awd are nice, and it sounds pretty gnarly, but its also more expensive. if you can wait, i'd say definitely get the wrx. i've ridden in both, liked the wrx way better.

im assuming your thinking about a hatchback wrx? depends on how much money you have theres no point in getting a subaru with high clicks when you can get a deecent vr6 with a much lower amount.

Pretty damn similar.

Also my mom had an 05 GTI and that shit was fun as hell to drive. She sold it however because it was a bitch to drive over the pass to go skiing. WRX mayne.

Go with the WRX! I have an 05 WRX and it's an amazing car. Been very reliable and is awesome in any kind of weather. You can also go stage 2 for not a whole lot of money and it is a lot of fun. GTI is also a sweet car though, defiantly try test driving both and see what you like more.

Being an owner of a mk4 GLI, i vote wrx. Parts are dumb expensive especially if you can't do the work yourself. VR6's are super nice motors and sound great. I'm assuming you're buying used, if you decide to go with the VW make sure the water pump/timing belt have been done or you're in for atleast $750 worth of labor to do so, unless you can do it yourself.

wrx's are sexy as fuck both in my opinion not to reliable both have engine problems ive heard with subarus boxers and vw's vr6 both good and wrx's would be sick in snow and look nicer in my opinion depends on your budget though

get one of those tdi hatch backs vw makes. not sure if you can get them with a turbo but the 6speeds are really quick and they do have awd. also there wayyy better on gas milage and dont look like a hick car.  but if you wanna go fast aand beat that shit get a rex.  im a subaru legacy gt owner. i like the car but i like euro cars better.

Ok. that'll get you something decent. My next question to you is..

you've chosen two pretty different cars in terms of power delivery and drive.

What do you want? awd vs. fwd? turbo vs NA?

Personally, I'd take either the subaru or the 1.8T from vw over the vr6. The 6 sounds great, but it's a big heavy and fairly consumptive powerplant.

now, if it were me.. for 9 G's I'd find the nicest 20th anniversary mk4 gti I could find and call it a day.

the chances for abuse are much higher. how many times has this car been redlined? did the previous owner follow proper warm up cool down procedures? etc etc.

that is such a generalized load of BS.

ANY car has the potential to have been 'abused'. If some jackass with a turbo car decides to continuously bag on it outside of its operating range, chances are it'll have broken or be noticeably fucked upon inspection to buy it. this isn't unique to FI (though the consequences are potentially higher).

'redlining' a car is irrelevant. that's what limiters are for.

and since when is a wrx or a gti a 'sports car'?

the subaru scene is pretty lame. the scene only uses 3 wheels. go to a subaru show. you will only see 3 types of wheels on every car. the VAG scene (volkswagen auto group) is much more creative and friendly. insurance is gona be pretty high on both, so if you a 16 year old wanting to buy one, your fucked. I would go with the gti.

Yeah bro, get a GTI. Those things are SO practical for the winter or for any kind of off-roading. I guess part rats never really go far off the beaten path so... if you're a park rat, or someone that doesn't care about ever leaving the pavement or never driving when it is snowing, get a GTI, bro.
