if you can cork 7 off a 60-footer i'd say you're at least in control of yourself. what i saw in that video is something more like trying to ski on top of an avalanche (good luck).

anyone with knowledge has any insight into the danger of subsurface currents and all that crap? a friend of my brother (certified canyoning guide) almost drowned in a very small and unimpressive barrell. and those guys ride so wild and fast rivers, it seems almost impossible to predict the dangers. is it like with avalanches? so you can learn about it and avoid it to a certain degree. or are the kayaks helping them to stay afloat more than one would think?

id like to get into boating if I could put in five good runs a day. When I went rafting you could only really put in two runs a day.

i have a very very small bit of whitewater experience but similar thing happened to me once when i was out there (Gull River Ontario). a guy i was paddling with flipped when he went cross-current over a few standing waves but the pull handle for his skirt was folded into the cockpit so he had nothing to grab to pull the skirt off. he ended up busting through it by just slamming his knees on it until it popped off

but i cant imagine how scary that musta been for him hahaha especially in whitewater. it was pretty shallow there too so when you went over every once in a while your helmet would slam off something.

I actually skin as well but I enjoy being in the mountains and the skin is enjoyable as well. I don't see walking up a road with a kayak on my back as being enjoyable

It's actually a huge amount of skill AND balls. I've been paddling for a few years, and while I'm not completely afraid of charging class V+/VI rivers, I know that I do not have the skill to do it without having a serious risk of it be the last thing I ever do.
Paddling is one of those sports that looks really easy, but that assuption changes as soon as you actually sit in a boat and pull out of an eddy. On that note, the actual award video was released a couple days ago:

If you don't toss the paddle, you'll almost always hit yourself in the face with it when you hit the water, almost always breaking your nose. Plus, the risk of dislocating or separating your shoulder also goes way up when you don't toss it.

This was absolutley insane, but I feel like the #1 rule for falling down a waterfall would be to keep your paddle in hand

had one a family friend and one of the coolest older guys at my local ski mountain die a year ago being pinned under a rock. it was horrible hearing about it and seeing the family afterwards
