Why do people lap the park..

when it's a pow day???

I seriously don't get it. This is the 3rd east coast pow day this year and possibly the best snow we've had in years (snowing when it's -10 is rare here) and I'm seeing at least half a dozen people just lapping the park all day. The park isn't going anywhere, you can do that absolutely every other day. Why wouldn't you go get some turns in the pow??? Getting run after run of turns in amazing pow and not touching bottom is a once a year event here.

Mind boggling. The only thing I can think of is that they just don't know how to ski anything but park.

If it's super crowded, I'll still lap the park. I find it more fun with pow stashes. If it is super crowded, I'll just wait til the next day, or after that and ski the mountain, I can usually find good powder stashes hidden around. But on a day when it's dumping like this I don't picture all of the gaper families skiing, so that takes about 1/2 the people off the hill.

As a minnesotan who has never had a true "powder day", i can sympathize. I love the park but i mean come one, why would someone pass that up??

except no one was even hitting any of the jumps. the largest 2 didn't even get hit once all day. and once the school groups left the hill was completely empty for 2 hours and the wind and snow filled in all the tracks so it was almost untouched on some runs and yet they were still there, hitting the same rails over and over and over. not that I care to have more people on the hill, but fuck, it was really bothersome to see.

I'm with you OP. I ski mostly park but tomorrow and probably the next couple days i'll be in the glades all day long... fuck yeah, can't wait.



As far as learning new tricks on a Pow day... you're going to have to work your ass off packing down the 1-2 feet of pow on the inrun. It sucks i've done it, not worth the effort to me. I don't know of any Mtns that completely groom their park on the day of the storm, or shortly after.



Park on Sunday though will be fucking awesome... everything is going to be freshly groomed and soft and sunny.

Ok, i suck asshole at jumps. they scare the shit out of me and i can barely do shit on them. i spent whole day on them because of nice landings and learn about 5 new tricks in 4 hours. i dont understand why someone would hit rails all day but jumps are great on a day like today

some people just have that mentality, i know i do.. trick trick trick on everything and anything. pow is sweet and all, but i usually only take a few runs on pow days then back to the park to shred something that isnt ice blocks hopefully

If it's too crowded jump the rope and ski the lift line. frowned upon and could be dangerous if there's rocks or something, but hey

Well today I went to Camp fortune (local hill) there was nobody there and I was lapping the park, hot laps all day. tomorrow I have a slopestyle comp on that park and I needed to get a clean run down. otherwise I would have been in the trees, just my reasoning behind it

I guarantee I'll be asked to dig out features with 1-2feet of snow next to them tomorrow at least 5 times...my response will be the same each time, a smile and quick chuckle as I go lap another trail, haha. We get storms like this once maybe twice a DECADE (if that)...I'm not wasting it with a shovel next to metal, I'll get it done on Sunday.

This. Its a shame.
I wish freeskiing wouldn't get the exposure it has nowadays. If you don't know how to ski and you don't plan on learning, get the fuck away from the mountain.

Ive never skiied pow before so i LOVED literally just re-learning how to ski down a hill. I honestly fell once every run but i was loving it anyway. Its an amazing feeling bouncing around in powder alot better than getting a 450 off a rail . / endrant

Kids weren't hitting the jumps because there is no way you can get enough speed to clear them without making an in-run, which would just be covered in an hour or so anyway. For myself, if I am in Ottawa I hit tress all day, unless it's pure ice or insanely exposed.
In Toronto I can only get to hills on the weekend and they are 5x busier, therefore the 10 minute waiting time just to get on the lift makes it not worth it. I will usually just hike some stashes for a couple hours then head to the park because it has a separate lift and no line.

Not going to lie, I love going in the pow when it happens, but I would rather just be skiing than waiting in a line to get 10 runs in 6 hours.

Because some people like riding park, so stop worrying so much about what other people enjoy doing, and assuming that everyone lapping the park on a pow day can't turn, pow-park is fun.

i went through the park on my last run today as a joke and because it happened to be at the bottom of the run. I cant understand why someone would rather be in a shitty inconsistent park with snow tufts everywhere than ripping some glades

At my home mountain I can do a chutes run and then traverse over to the park so I get the best of both all in one run. But I'll still ski mostly pow instead of park on a pow day.

Best east coast trick ever is to lap the park on a pow day.

The best snow on the mountain with fresh tracks all day long is beside the rails and around the jumps.

Cause at least at my hill, the park is just all the features spread out all over the hill. So you do a bit of both. There's no trees (although there might be enough snow to cover up the ground from this one, so you could go in them), no cliffs, nothing steep to actually get speed in pow.

Park skiing is fully addicting because of the challenge it presents. Skiing pow is super fun, dont get me wrong, but I used to enjoy it a lot more than I do now.

Skiing pow is a great time. Just chilling with some buddies and enjoying that feeling of soft untracked snow, but there isnt that aspect of getting that next best trick. In basketball you can always work on your free throws to improve your percentage, or you can train to run a race in a faster time. In park skiing you can work to get that next 180 on your trick or spin the other way. There are measurable goals to achieve, and when you get into it it is addicting. Pow doesnt have that aspect, and that is why I dont find the same satisfaction in it.

Lol, I skied a 35cm day last season on my liberty antigens (only ski I owned at the time) would not recommend those skis are way too soft I would often get bucked around and end up backwards or on my face. Still loved it though
