Introvert or extrovert?

i am an introvert. and all i know are the exact opposite so i feel like the only one, any others out there? NS seems like a introspective place sometimes..

thread made me lol but yes. thats why im leaaving the town i live in and going to montana state. all the people im surrounded by, all my buddies are extroverts and i really cant take it. they are so self absorbed and have no feelings for others all they do is talk shit and seem to have no care for what anyone other than them think. Whenever i try and get deep or talk about life or the world they just gimme a blank stare and call me a psycho/drug addict/faggot. fuck off. idk how they can live with themselves to be honest.

well, I for one am not a big fan of this whole "black or white" way of seeing personalities. I am sure there are people who fit into one category exclusively but they are a tiny minority, I would say everyone else falls into a middle zone with tendencies toward one side or another.

I have met many people who are "introverts" by their own description because they think everyone else is dumb and they alone are superior. This is not an introvert, this is an asshole. The best way I have head the difference between an introvert and extrovert described is as follows: "The basic difference between an introvert and extrovert is they way they react to groups of people. In a large group of people (think house party or mall) an extrovert will gain energy from the surrounding people, whereas an introverts energy will decrease when exposed to large groups with lots of stimulation." I would venture to say most people fall into both categories depending on the length of exposure. I personally gain energy from groups of people for a while but at a certain point will rapidly fatigue into what some would call in introvert, despite the fact an hour ago I was a shining example of an extrovert. I believe most people fall into this "in between" category where they lean more to one side but are not fixed to either category.

In the end it is all about how you feel. If you are happy in a small-medium sized group but find larger groups to be agitating then avoid larger groups when possible, if you find yourself attracted to large groups then go and join them. It shouldn't take an online quiz or a doctor to realize you should just do what you enjoy.

Only part I strongly disagree with in this post. I like the other parts, but this needs to be noted.

NEVER AVOID SOMETHING BECAUSE IT MAKES YOU UNCOMFORTABLE. Worst possible thing to do, it will keep your personality stagnant and will end up running your whole life.

I suppose I should have clarified, I ment that if you dont enjoy being in large groups then dont force yourself to be in them. Still go and be a part of things, but if you need a break dont hesitate to go our for a breath of air or use the washroom to get away for a bit until you're feeling up to it again.

thats only one of the differences. another is the way the two think. extroverts are concerned with what is going on in the outer world for the most part. introverts are concerned with the inner world

feel like i've wasted a large part of my life being introvert, didn't realise till after school how much i'd missed out on just from being quite shy and that i could have been a lot happier if i'd just sacked up haha, been much more outgoing/extroverted the passed year or so and life is so much more enjoyable, it gives you a positive outlook and you still have the opportunity to have a closer group of friends, tips for life keep in contact with people as best as possible and smiling goes a hell of a long way

Thats not entirely true, if you really want to get into it look into Internal and External Sensing and Intuition. Someone thats and introvert but with a preference for sensing really isn't going to care at all with all your pseudo deep 16 year old stoner talk =)


And Cufe, based on your second to last paragraph you sound like a good example of a well adjusted introvert, who is expelling there energy but when it goes on too long needs to recharge. I really enjoy being at parties, seeing all my friends and blowing off all the energy I've been saving all day. I do, however, need to go outside and "go get something from the car" or take a pee and have some me time to recharge every once and a while, but then can go back and do it again. That party all the time life style that some people do, constantly crashing on couches and hardly never not with people just isn't for me, I need time to be alone, process everything, take a break and rest and think for a while.

being shy is not the same as being an introvert. you were shy, not introverted. props for getting over your shyness, though, not necessarily an easy thing to do.

im introverted and all my best friends are salesmen(aka biggest extroverts going). we balance each other out very well.

the problem is finding a chick that is extorverted but not annoyingly so.

Only as often as extraversion and shyness come together. Introversion doesn't mean you're socially maladjusted, it's just about how your mind works. Famous introverts include Einstein, Darwin, Chopin and Warren Buffet.

this I guess. I can't really tell. every test I've taken has said extrovert but only over by a little bit.

I don't really care though sometimes I talk to randoms sometimes I don't. I'm in a good place.

i disagree shyness is a definitely a trait associated with being introvert, think about how many of your extroverted friends are shy, not too many

yes, i never said they didn't, did i? that doesn't change the fact that he was just shy, and not introverted. being an introvert or extrovert isn't something you can "get over." it's just the way you are. shyness, on the other hand, you can overcome and teach yourself to be more outgoing.

I used to be why when I was young. By no means was I introvert. Now I'm very social and comfortable in social situations. I agree that extroverts can be shy.

i disagree, introvert, extrovert and ambivert summarise the personality traits a person has, in the same way you can change different personality traits within yourself you can move between the introvert extrovert continuum depending on what traits you show, imo

at the heart of introversion/extroversion is the idea that, for introverts, social interaction is draining, while for extroverts it is energizing. that is something you can't change about yourself.

one of these threads pops up every month.
its more of a bell curved scale of personality with introverted on one end and extroverted on the other. unless youre pretty weird, you should be somewhere in the good balance of them both.

slightly relevant.

Men have a lower level of Monoamine oxidase than women. Lower levels also correspond with being a thrill seeker and being an extrovert.

Women tend to be more sensitive to dopamine, but it's a genetic thing so some women are and some aren't. Dopamine is what gives you that feeling during sex that you love the person.

Because women have a higher level of MOA, it is likely the women that are more sensitive to dopamine that enjoy thrill seeking activities such as skiing. (women tend to already be more sensitive to dopamine than men-- but some women enjoy it even more)

From a brain chemistry standpoint, a female who enjoys the thrill of skiing probably likes sex more than the average female.

This of course isn't 100% of the time, the correlation's are just pretty solid, so it's "likely" that what I just said is true.

But what I can't explain through brain chemistry is why there are male introverts that enjoy thrill seeking... must be more nurture than nature. I suspect it isn't the trill of skiing for introverts but more the feeling of self accomplishment.
