I wasn't done posting, but the dog needed a walk so...
I have limited knowledge of the east coast, but here are my thoughts and a few questions first. Where do you ski (not just Vermont, what specific resorts)? Will this be replacing a ski, be your your only ski, be added to your quiver? What skis do you currently have? Is $500 a firm budget or will you be able to spend more. Also see the stickied thread of how to ask for ski advice.
Please correct me if i'm wrong on any of this, but from my stereotypical knowledge of the east coast is that there is limited terrain and ice. Due to the limited terrain I would assume that powder gets tracked out fast and because of the ice you might want to consider a narrower ski. Skis such as the ON3P Jeronimo, Icelantic Nomad and Nomad RKR, Line Blend, K2 Kung Fujas, and (insert ~100mm waist ski here). most of these skis are above you price range, but most of them can be found at end of season sales and places like evo.com's outlet.
