Everyone today is going off on a rant about how guns are the problem, or video games and this and that. But really we need to step back from the situation and see why these situations are happening. Sure these are all contributing factors for correlation, but there isn't any proof that's its the causation for these things. However, what separates you and I from being someone that snaps and does a shooting?

The answer lies in the fact that psychiatric help and evaluations are not use nor are they up to where they should be in getting people the help they need. Take away the guns and you still have the people who need help. Some on the verge of a breaking point where they snap and lash out. Seriously, these people need help. Yet every year we cut funds for programs like this. But everyone feels that they need to push a political or social point everything one of these shootings happen. And I know that its hypocritical to make a statement like this, but seriously its always the last stone turned. /End rant.

and the "well knives are dangerous too" argument is completely idiotic. ryan lanza is not killing 20 children with a fucking knife. you can defend against other forms of weaponry. you can't defend against an automatic assault weapon.

nobody used an automatic. One of my biggest peeves is when people throw gun terms out and dont know what they mean.

somebody in another thread said "FMJs!?!?" as if an fmj is the most lethal round. Im not gonna argue that guns dont fuck shit up. Just please learn the terminology before you use it

In my opinion guns aren't the problem, people are. There are some messed up people out there and if they want to kill people they are probably going to kill people. I use a gun to hunt deer and elk with. This is because I need to stack my freezer with meat. Store bought beef is shit. I like guns but they are extremely dangerous. Its not the guns fault its the person behind the gun. So I say we ban people.

Exactly. If they were all with handguns(I know they weren't) people wouldn't still be talking about how we need to ban all automatics etc.

Im pretty sure all automatics are already banned.  As far as I know these people didnt use automatic weapons.

full autos are very legal and not that hard to get. it just requires extra licensing. The only thing that prevents people from buying them is that they cost a lot

I am not going to pretend I understand America's obesession with guns.... But I don't see why this discussion is always so polarized. The position people take are so extreme on both sides... Guns don't need to be banned because there are people who use rifles to access food sources.. that being said, you are a pretty shitty hunter if you can get a kill with a single action rifle. There is no reasonable argument to validate owning a auto or even semi-auto weapon....Yeah there are alot of social changes that need to happen and the attitudes towards violence need to change, but in the meantime some actions must be taken and efforts need to be made to prevent yet another tragedy.

In Canada the long gun registry was scrapped to appease certain groups in our society. It was politicized heavily and conservatives deemed ineffective and therefore it failed. But really what is the big deal about registering a weapon? You register your car so everyone knows which cars belong to where and to who, why not register your weapon at the same time? What is so horrible about knowing where some of the guns are and who has them? At the very least it would be easier to track stolen weapons.

I sum: guns don't need to be banned, but they sure as hell need to be controlled better. Civilian use doesn't require high volume cartridges or assault weapons. Yeah they may be fun, but until attitudes change and social structures are in place to keep vulnerable people from getting hopeless and desperate maybe we can sacrifice a little fun for a little more security.

I'm sorry but if you're using a snub nosed revolver to hunt anything then you are a god damned moron. Perhaps maybe for protection against bears if you are hunting bear, but I'd love to know what you hunt with that gun.


I'm all for gun rights as I'm an active hunter in my great state of pennsylvania. With that said extended clips and full auto guns are not for hunting, they are actually illegal to hunt with. Does that mean I think they should be outlawed??? I'm still up in the air about it, I do think firearms make for a strong nation of citizens against any attacking force, be it an invading country or an out of control government. I realistically don't see that happening any time soon though here in the US. So I might be willing to give up the rights to own those guns.....might.

I'm all for armed guards in schools, I mean they are in all airplanes nowadays and nobody worries about letting their child on a plane with a gun present.

If you're gonna federally fund mental therapy to stop shooting rampages like this, well then I'd like a federally funded lockable gun safe in my house. there are already plenty of programs that distribute gun locks for free in my area. these are steps that could be taken to make gun ownership more safe. Up the penalties for straw sales too for all I care, I'd never sell a gun to someone I don't know and definitely not a criminal.

Getting rid of all guns in the US is a pipe dream though. It will never happen. Hunting is too mainstream in our culture and country for that to ever happen so deal with it.

This is cherry picking if you ask me. I do like how the bad numbers are all in red though, that's pretty scary.

What about the other 25 states that have over 30% gun ownership. Including at least 5 or so that are over 50% yet are not on that list of high gun death rates?? Oh right that might insinuate that there are actual responsible safe gun owners out there too.

His example is a little extreme, but then so is anyone suggesting banning all guns. Why ban something completely due to a very slim number of people who use them in the improper way.

Think of it this way, for every 30,000 gun deaths per year, well wait 50% at least are suicide, for every 15,000 gun deaths in the US each year, there are millions upon millions of children and young adults who are properly trained and taught to hunt and target shoot and enjoy a good life experience in responsibility and adulthood due to firearms. I treasure the time I have spent with my family hunting and bonding while learning to respect and handle firearms responsibly. All while also learning about my natural surroundings and wildlife while doing so. If it hadn't been for guns and hunting I may not have learned so much about animals, wilderness, safe shooting, unsafe shooting, and taking responsiblity for your actions.


Yea we have lots of gun deaths in the US. A very very very slim number of that is mass shootings. Even 30,000 gun deaths a year, from all manner of death by gun, is still a drop in the bucket compared to how many own and use guns in the US on a daily basis. I'd say we're pretty damn responsible actually. It's just very easy to focus on the negative when the media jams it down our throat on a 24/7 basis.
