What music making software do you use?

The DAW and interface isn't the issue. It's preamps, A/D converters, acoustics, mic placement, etc.

Sure, you can throw your cab in a closet with a condenser and a moving blanket over it, and with the right skill it can sound really good. But it will also be really fucking loud, but that's true for any electric guitar music. If I recall Alan Parsons and the engineer both had to physically leave the studio building while recording the Time solo from Dark Side of the Moon because it was so ungodly loud.

Of course, one can do these things by reading a book and investing some money, but I was simply commenting on how much more difficult it is than simply plugging in a MIDI controller and getting great sound quality.

I have to say I'm totally unaware of what those softwares do, but do you have to plug in an instrument or a synthesizer to the computer or can you just create from nothing sounds?

Obviously you can get much better sound with much higher end equipment. But for most every joe shmo band looking to record a live show or make a demo, the entry-level protools stuff is fine. Obviously you benefit from the equipment and facilities of a real studio.

Most of the protools setups, even entry level ones, contain a preamp and act as A/D D/A converters. Again, an outside preamp does provide much better sound.

Its kind of like a complete studio in a box, depending on what software you were to buy you get some synths and sampled instruments too. No "real"/hardware instrument or synthesizer is required.

Pro Tools for all my recording and mixing. I engineer for Carter Behnke and John River, two different styles but they are both up my alley.

Use Logic if you are looking to compose/arrange music, and Pro Tools if you are looking to record/mix. A majority of studios have both for both reasons I mentioned.

Midi is a standard protocol for devices that control anything that synthesizes sound. For basic midi controllers all the device outputs is a value for the key you are hitting (for example number 60 is the value for middle C) along with the velocity of the note (how hard you hit the key.) The software that you are using then takes those values and creates digital audio based on the parameters given to it from the keystroke.

If you buy something like Logic you have a great selection of synths and modelled instruments to choose from, for a beginner you will most likely just choose synths that you like and make music using them. If you want to create your own synths pretty much every app has an editor. You can also buy software like maxmsp which is a visual coder for pretty much anything sound related.

Are really good, maybe you don't want to produce dubstep but the basic concepts still apply. Its all the same stuff across genres, applied differently. Read the stickies too, tons of good information in those.
Those aren't really ableton-specific, just general production gabber, sound design, theory, whatever.
