This summer, I was staying at a friend's cabin on an island off Michigan for a week. The last day I was there, we were riding dirt bikes on the main road which is not even really a road, but more of a large, smooth dirt path. We had been doing this throughout the week so it was nothing special or new to me and I felt pretty confident going 50+ down the road. Anyway, my friend, who was riding an ATV, and I, dirtbike, were coasting down the road when my friends brother, who was riding a Bush Hog utility vehicle, started swerving at us coming up the opposite direction as a joke. My friend was in front of me and we both kind of swerved out of the way, but still maintained the same speed. He wasn't going real fast so there was no real danger, but my eyes followed him all the way past us so I was looking behind going 45 mph for a good 10 seconds. As soon as I turned my head around I see my friend, in the ATV, stopped right in front of me about 15 feet away. I had no time to stop and I could only yell "Oh, shit!" before I crashed into the back of his ATV and ejected into the air to the side of the ATV. I don't remember anything after the crash until I was laying on the side of the road. My friend said I flew and skidded on the road for a good 25 feet until I came to a complete stop. I just remember looking up, breathing heavily, feeling nothing (until about 5 minutes later when the shock ended and the pain set in) and not believing I was alive. The only damage was a fat bruise on my left side, a gash on my left leg, a gash on my chin, and a huge gash all only my left knuckle between my fore and middle fingers (had to get it stitched.) Picture of knuckle after stitching:
Doesn't look too huge, but it was very wide and the bone was somewhat visible. Blood just poured from that motherfucker. I still, to this day, can't believe that damage wasn't worse. Oh, and it was Friday the 13th when this occurred.
